CAIRNS #1 HILLBILLY ESTATE AGENT USES INSULTS TO SELL PROPERTY IN THIS STAGNANT MARKET

THIS BRINSMEAD HOUSE WILL BE WORTH EVEN MORE
AFTER MUDSLIDE TAKES IT INTO WHITFIELD!
Chris Gay, an estate agent and frequent advertiser on the Cueball MacKenzie Hillbilly talkfest, has taken to the Cairns Post today to try out the latest in Cairns real estate selling tools.

The "Call 'em Morons" method.

Gay sez "Cairns locals will miss out as smart southern investors swoop as they get out of the stock market."

In other words, southerners are smart, Cairns locals are stupid. Well, at least in his world.

Gay is known for his continual spruiking of the local real estate market, irrespective of any facts.  A search shows he's been claiming the market is "growing strongly" and "a buying opportunity". since at least 2005, as the market began to tank.  And every opportunity he has on the MacKenzie show, where no lie is too big when coming from an advertiser.  I think Gay was shouting this same message at the height of cyclone Yasi, when he also said "the market is about to turn".  Even a broken clock is right occasionally.

Gay also tells porkies, incredibly Gay porkies: - on one of his listing, a house at Brinsmead listed at $385k, "to build that new would cost at least $500k".  So why hasn't it sold at $385k, Mr. Gay?  Perhaps the "smart southern investors" are too smart for your annoying estate agent bullshit and continuous hyperbole.

Chris Gay.  Our Hillbilly jackass of the day, and Cairns' favourite "used car real estate" agent.

the problem is not so much used car salesmen, real estate agents and snake oil salesman, it's the fact that charlatans like Nick Dalton and Gavin King dress up their spiels as fact and vomit it up all over innocent Cairns residents.

I kid you not - some spiv journalist there recently wrote a story about some sort of miracle oil being imported from PNG.

Presumably it doesn't cure terminal dishonesty.

The Cairns Post is beholden to the real estate industry due to the massive amount of advertising dollars they provide - not their own money of course, but that of the house sellers. Therefore, the paper will gleefully spin any real estate agent spiel as if it were a news story.

Another candidate for Hillbilly Jackass - Paul Freebody - what a knob!
From Fairfax:

LNP hopeful denies Gillard JFK reference
Evan Schwarten
August 12, 2011 - 6:00PM
An LNP candidate has denied writing that he hopes Prime Minister Julia Gillard "follows the history" of assassinated US President John F Kennedy.

Paul Freebody, a Cairns businessman and the LNP's candidate for the state electorate of Cairns, sent an email to dozens of respondents on Thursday taking aim at the Labor government's proposed carbon tax.

A version of the email obtained by AAP, shows Mr Freebody labeled the Prime Minister evil and makes the reference to the former US President.

"I see Gillard and Brown as the most evil people we have ever had in power in our country," the email states.

"We can only hope that she follows the history of JFK."

The email was apparently sent in response to a circulating petition which criticises Rupert Murdoch's influence over the government.

However, Mr Freebody claims the email was doctored.

He has produced a different version of the same email which is identical apart from the final line which ends with the initials KMR, in reference to Kevin Rudd, rather than JFK.

"It wasn't JFK it was Kevin Michael Rudd. Someone has been mischievous," he told AAP.

"Categorically, I never said that. I said she should get the same treatment she gave Kevin Rudd."

Two other recipients of the email have confirmed to AAP that they received the version with the reference to "JFK".

The LNP has been sought for comment.

The Cairns Post also ran this as an editorial in the hardcopy. The concept that a stockmarket rout would be transferred into property was entrenched in Australian culture with the 1987 crash.

A stockmarket bubble (where Australia was among the most extreme but at least we got Skase to build Mirage before he went bust) was matched by anyone who can remember back then, with an extremely undervalued property market. Subsequently fed by interest rate cuts following the crash property boomed.

Is that where we are now? I can't see the drivers and actually can't see that there has been any massive stockmarket withdrawal from retail investors to reinvest comparable with the GFC or 1987?

The biggest hits on the stockmarket have been banks in recent weeks. The period of exceptional real estate returns in recent decades coincided with strong returns in bank shares.

It is very hard for property to do well when banks are being whacked because that's where the money comes from despite some good fundamentals on such as vacancy rates. Sorry for that naive analysis but this has shown up strongly in data in the last year.

That's not to say that there can't be decent returns or that there are not pockets of good value and bargains just now. Although genuine information is hardly the agenda of the Cairns Post.

Contrary to many I have never been part of the extreme pessimism on the Far North economy in recent years. On a longer view Cairns is well positioned within continuing global trends. Some of us are mature enough to have seen through such cycles before.

Pteropus above...I have been wondering myself whether the emails sent by Freebody were doctored. His election as candidate for the seat of Cairns was not without a bit of turmoil and dismay within the ranks of the local LNP. There are those who supported another candidate and I am wondering if this isn't just an internal hatchet job.

Freebody personifies everything the LNP stands for - it is Tea Party-style extremism write large in Australia.

The problem is most of them don't have the honesty to say what they really think.

The LNP lost what little credibility it has when it anointed an imbecilic failed businessman Pee Peabody as its candidate.

I wouldn't write off the LNP, T. Hillier. What has happened to Freebody is, in my opinion, a deliberate hatchet job. We have all experienced how they had Mackenzie and King do the bully-boy vendetta against Val Schier, dream up the "Cash for Comment" schmozzle etc. This State Election will be the filthiest, dirtiest campaign this city will have ever witnessed in its history, wait and see.

If anyone wants to see a testimony to the greed of developers and real estate agents, head down to Airlie Beach and have a look at the hills surrounding the bay. They are crammed with units, stacked up like a huge leggo set, row upon row. People say that every wet season there are huge land slippages and some units have come crashing down. There won't be much left if a cyclone comes rushing in.
