IT'S ALL OVER - BUSINESS PLAN APPROVED, $57mil IN CASH, WORLD-CLASS ENTERTAINMENT PRECINCT GETS GO-AHEAD FROM STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENTS

While Council needs to take a final vote on the Entertainment Precinct next week, the approval of the business case and allocation of $57 million in cash PLUS the waterfront site now seem to ensure a quick start to the Entertainment Precinct.

A hearty huzzah to Mayor Schier and the councillors (even those who steadfastly cling to a 1950-era Cairns) for having the vision to think big and get Cairns a facility for the future.  The federal investment commitment of $40m brings the total windfall to the Cairns ratepayers to $137m - the largest government investment in the future of Cairns ever.

Let's get the bulldozers moving after the holidays!

It will be interesting to see if MacKenzie, the idiot, and his hill billy friends have to say about the further injecton of CASH from the Queensland Government. I won't and never listen to him and his hill billies. I rely on reading it hear. Its much more interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if the Chief Hill Billy claims it as his victory.

Rugnut will probably go into overdrive now about "tying up Ports land". The naysayers have gotten so far I don't believe they will give up now, even if it is to try and "save face". They don't care about the future of Cairns, only their own egos.

hip hip hooray. hip hip hooray. You wont see me at any bloody crap coral society show or opera or tennors or orchestra stuff. But my old lady and daughter and my old Mum like all that stuff and my old lady scrubs up real nice to go. Mum and the old lady flew to Sydney to see The Lion King a couple of years back and they reckoned they would love to have it up here hey.

Rugnut teed up Martin "I'M AN ABO, TOO!" Tenni as the first caller. Tenni spit the dummy, you could here him spitting and foaming at the mouth. Sounded like he was gonna have a coronary.

We can all hope. . . .I'm an eternal optimist.

Why the hell doesn't rugnut give up? He's demonstrated he is a megalomaniac whose only purpose is to fight Val Schier. The Mayor did the right thing by proposing this Precinct a couple of years back. The tourist industry was nose diving and we needed something to revitalise it.

Sooooo, Cr. Cooper's jumped ship, has she?

If the vote is lost next week, and the tourist industry continues to tank, more jobs, businesses etc will be lost, real estate will spiral downwards. Mackenzie will then start his rant about how the "Government gives everything to Townsville and the S.E. corner and nothing to us."

Well I guess next week is the final call. Then it is all over. I feel as if I have said everything except that I will be keeping a record of how the Councillors vote, because I believe this vote is critical to the future of the ailing tourist industry, and I want the Councillors held fully responsible for what they do. No "ifs" nor "buts" or "what ifs" they have had ample time to study and investigate everything. The future direction of this city is now in their hands.

Big Gav made an executive decision for the Can Do LNP Party today and said they would also fund the CEP if elected. Yeah, sure. Apparently when Can Do was asked on local news he had no idea ( not that that's unusual) of that decision.

Should the Councillors knock it back then I expect that during the Council election campaign a campaign should be waged against those who are obviously keeping our City in the doldrums.

Slightly off topic, but someone finally had the nerve to get on TalkBack today and point out that Martin Tenni used to be a member of the most corrupt state government this country has ever seen and that as such this bitter old man has no credibility whatsoever despite constantly polluting the airwaves with his fascist rants.

McKenzie off course cut the caller off and totally ignored the very valid points he made. I think more people should call up to protest against the constant vitriol that is being dished out by a handful of deluded regulars.

I really hope the CEP goes ahead, if only to spite and shut up Mckenzie and his loyal band of fuckwits.

It's easy for some of the negative councillors to say "no". It's interesting to note that only one alternative proposal was put forward, by Alan Blake. A proposal that faltered as the flaws in that project location and other issues were examined. Blowhard Marge's plan, as articulated a few weeks ago on the Cueball show, is "let's wait a couple years and then start again".

That isn't a plan, that's a cop-out.

This is a great plan, not perfect, but well examined and ready to go. Let's do it.

Part of the problem here is a lack of "good news" about the CEP.

I was in a cab from the city to Mt Sheridan the other day. As we passed the entertainment centre the driver made a remark about the waste of money for something the people of Cairns don't want.

By the time we were half way along Ray Jones Drive he had completely changed his mind.

Bad news not only travels fast, but often seems to travel alone.

He wasn't aware of the state and federal funding, he thought rates were rising 10% to pay for it .... "the docks need the land" was another one.

What finally turned him was the thought of another Headley getting the land and building more high rises, with the public losing access to the area.

The message needs to get out there, I don't read the Cairns Compost, or listen to local radio, and I suspect I'm in the majority, reach me, find a way.

It looks certain to become yet ANOTHER politcal SCAM seeing the people of Cairns and the Far North dudded out of more millions of Government funds. Last time, it was a billion dollars for a brand new hospital. If the Council oppose the CEP, that will mean Cairns has effectively rejected:-

A brand new hospital, a new performing arts theatre, extended convention facilities plus a regional museum.

Doesn't look good for Cairns does it? We would be the only city in the world to do this.

If we lived in Townsville then both the cannel dredging and the Entertainment Precinct would be approved. For some reason the people in George Street seem to think that one project at a time is the way to go for Cairns. Also people in Cairns don't seem to have the guts to stand up and say we'll have both. However if Can't Do gets his way and only allows for the Channel deeping then the people of Cairns will be dudded. Dredgin g the Channel will not created any employment for locals. We might get hotel accommodation for about 6 people and the purchasing of supplies which is nothing compared to what the Entertainmaqnt Precint will provide. Plus we will be wdening and deeping the channel for about 6 extra ships a year. That also is nothing compared to what we will get from the EP. Lets face it, the State Government has given us $100 million and the Federal Government has given us $40 million. This money belongs to the people of Cairns. Every Councillor who votes it down is virtually robbing our piggy bank. If they vote it down lets campaign against them atthe Council Elections. They don't deserve to be re-elected for giving away our money.

Charlie i agree that if it were Brownsville we would have got both but are you a complete morron these cruise ships have over 2500 paxs on them and to say what you did convices me you are.

Cairns Port Authority's website reveals that Cairns is already one of Australia's busiest cruise ports with over 200 cruise ship visits a year. Cairns has not been a "working port" since the 1980s when the newly created Cairns Port Authority scaled down working operations in Cairns and developed the four working ports of Mourilyan, Cape Flattery, Skardon River and Karumba in Far North Queensland. These are the ports which today handle the export trade.

Large scale dredging ceased in Cairns back in the early 1980s largely because of environmental concerns and because the Cairns port is the closest to the Great Barrier Reef. The Cairns Port Authority subsequently put a lot of effort into developing the four working ports in the Far North as outlined above by A. Alloway. This whole issue of "dredging" the Cairns inlet is therefore nothing but sheer cunning to cause confusion and distraction.

Well it will all be over tomorrow morning. I don't believe for a minute the Precinct will get the nod from the Councillors. All that remains this time around is just how fast the State Government moves in handing the money to Townsville or the Gold Coast.

Anonymous said...

I reckon Anna will move so flaming fast in asking for the millions to be returned that old Margie and company will be knocked flying. Yeah theres dozens of towns and cities in Queensland could do with the dough and the Gold Coast has won the race to host the Commonwealth Games so they are going to need a heap of dinero as well. Yeah Cairns will probably be left with SWEET F.A.

Mr. Ramsey said...

And to add to the pressure, the former mayor was on 4CA again denigrating the project and saying that a new council would kill it if even the current council voted for it.

Kev and John then spent several minutes speculating that the councillor who is rumoured to have changed her vote to the positive, could be charged with corruption, if she voted for the project.

As soon as Kev left, bleating Bob Manning turned up to say what he has said a thousand times before, followed on cue by the deputy cane-toad and the manic Pearl.(Pearl the sooner you lot de-amalgamate the better !).

You really have t wonder what's behind all this. It is certainly not a concern for struggling rate-payers.

Spare me the crocodile tears, Kevvie. YOU were the one who abolished the early payment discount for rate payers...

Even "Elvis" the staunch advocate of dredging th inlet (and good on him) wrote a letter to the editor yesterday, supporting the project. I bet you McKenzie won't have him back on his show anymore now..

Word on the street is that "Masthead/Beaconhead" Bob Manning is to run for Mayor against our Mayor Val and Aunty Margaret. Masthead or Beaconhead are the names that the boys on Smith Creek like to use when they talk about Bob. He talks to them like he is still running the Port and its his way or the highway as it has always been with him.
