"THE MAIDEN ARRIVAL OF A CHINA SOUTHERN AIRLINES FLIGHT TODAY AT GOLD COAST AIRPORT SIGNALS A RENEWED VIGOUR IN THE PUSH FOR THE LUCRATIVE ASIAN MARKET"
"THE AIRPORT, PARTNERED WITH GOLD COAST TOURISM. . . ."
Isn't this the airline, and the market, we're continually told by Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) that is "just on the horizon"? Yeah, gone far over the horizon to southeast Queensland, who's done the hard yards and has gotten them committed. All while highly-paid TTNQ executives sit in their offices, slammin' the ham, and calling in to John MacKenzie every week to whinge about world problems and the sad state of Cairns while organising the next China junket.
John Mackenzie may fall for that bullshit, but the community is seeing it for what it is.
TTNQ has set a target of 215,000 Chinese visitors a year, while the Gold Coast is planning on 750,000 to a million! All with this assistance of their local airport authority.
You all remember the Cairns Airport. Formerly owned by the Cairns Port Authority (they are US, THE PEOPLE), they're the highest-charging airport in the southern hemisphere and most of the rest. The now privately owned airport owners are setting out to screw every last farthing from declining numbers of passengers, while turning airport land into office parks and shopping malls. Clearly unworthy partners for the dying-on-the-vine Cairns tourism industry, but with their ex-CEO now chairman of TTNQ, the incest just gets more nasty.
And what about the Fed promises to insist on "triangulation" services with Cairns for any new foreign access? Chinese got Kevin Rudd in their pocket, that's for damn sure.
It's time these hillbilly blockheads at TTNQ all get the ax. They're doing bugger all to get tourists here - except in the excuse department, where they excel. Hey Rob Giason and Stephen Gregg - excuses are like arseholes, everyone has one. Let's stop the junketing to China and get some real professionals to start executing. Clearly the Gold Coast has it figured out.
