WITH STATE ELECTION NOW HISTORY, WE TURN FOCUS ON CRC ELECTION AND RELATED ISSUES

With the state election now history (yes, I know voting is two days away, but the results are already in), we now turn our attention to the Cairns Regional Council elections.

It wasn't our intention to comment on the CRC election until candidate filing deadlines had passed.  With the filing deadline noon on the 27th, we won't know for sure who's actually filed to run in the various councillor divisions, and for Mayor of the Cairns Regional Council.

IMAGINE THIS SITTING AT
THE COUNCIL TABLE
We are however struck by the actions of one Jack Andrew Wilkie-Jans, who until a few days ago was said to be a candidate for Division 9, the seat being vacated by the disgraced Sno Bonneau.  (More on that later).

Wilkie-Jans a self-described "flaming queen" (not that there's anything wrong with that), seemed an unlikely choice for the mostly conservative Northern Beaches electorate. While few in the community have ever met or spoken with him, he's apparently been running a vigorous campaign on social media sites like Facebook and Myspace.  Also where he posted his withdrawal announcement (although it has been confirmed that he never filed the candidacy papers with the returning officer).

The announcement reads:

This reads more like a cheap novel than a real story.  When quizzed about the details, Wilkie-Jans' details kept shifting - the exact time and date it happened, the location (first in Kewarra Beach, then in another house at Edge Hill), and curiously the fact that while he claims he's been harassed and assaulted for quite some time, he refuses to report the incidents to the police!  Leigh Dall'Osto very rightly suggested it, and Wilkie-Jans has ignored the suggestion.

Then the usual brain-dead Facebookers run to his side, wailing and moaning about poor Jack and the bad old people, bullied out by illegal tactics, with one saying "you'll be back Jack, you have such a great sense of character and direction".

What a crock of shit.

Hey pillow-biters, the reason Jackie-boy likely didn't go to the coppers is that they don't like taking false police reports.  Man in trench coat and knee-high gum boots in the rain?  That's a bad Hitchcock film, not any Cairns reality.  I can hear them laughing from here!

How about it Jack, haul your skinny arse down to the police station, and file a report for these despicable acts.  THAT'S YOUR COMMUNITY RESPONSIBLITY!  If candidates are being bullied out of the race, that's a crime that needs to be stopped!  You claim "aggressive and alarming phone calls" to your mobile and home phone.  These are easily traced, Jack.  Let's get these crims off the street!  You can claim discrimination for any number of reasons.  Homophobia.  Racial.  Mentally Challenged.  It's time to get the unseemly elements of Cairns society off the streets, once and for all!

Then again, there's the most realistic analysis of Jack Andrew Wilkie-Jans, posted in a message on Facebook from his "Aunty Michelle":

It's been a nice adventure, hasn't it Jack.
Adventure, as in "fiction"?
Is it now starting to sound too much like work, Jack?

Never having met Mr Wilkie-Jans I have nevertheless personally expelled him from the Cairns Association of Flaming Queens for his endorsement of the poor sad hat mob.

As noone has recently scored a Hitler point I might take one by suggesting he and Mr Michael Always Rightzmen should consider membership of the Cairns Ernst Rohm Remembrance Society.

I have not seen Jack take a strong convincing interest in council matters at all. He likes attention for sure and has something going for him, but not real work like being a councillor. There is nothing about his stance on council matters that would incite anyone to stalk, more likely would send most to sleep. His passion is art, fashion and seeking adulation from others. Maybe he should stick to what he is good at.

The hubby and I ran into him at some arty function the neighbours dragged him to. I reckon he's realised that all the people he idolises like Ian Thomas and Nanna Margie don't want his entertainment centre and they weren't going to name the stage after him.

Was thinking some of those opera types could write something to be performed there but. Instead of Boy from Ox we could have Boy from Trinity Beach/Edge Hill.

Really, Hillbilly? To be frank, I'd rather look at Jack in the Council Chambers than snakey Blakey who makes my skin crawl. And Jack's much more vital looking than the greedy, grubbing old septegenarian with one slippered foot in the grave, Grandad Bob Manning. Jack's only problems are that he is naive and idealistic, as we all were. Once upon a time.

Perhaps he couldn't find 6 people to nominate him or afford the $250?

I suspect young Jack would blow a cyclone of fresh air and energy through the Council Chambers. He is also a reminder that the Cairns Regional Council, despite over 140 years of settlement, has not once had a representative on board from the aboriginal and Torres Strait islander population. Ours is not an inclusive society and the aspirations of people like Jack confirm this. Frankly, I expect to see Jack put his hand up again, in the future. We'll meet again Jack, some sunny day!

I'd suggest you Jack off, Mr Watch, but I'm not that kind of person.

I'd rather have a raving Queen, or even a raving heterosexual for that matter, in the chamber than Bob Manning or Margaret Cochrane.

bogan said...

you're spot on as per usual Liz. Your bloods worth bottlin as they say. Yeah its about time we had an ATSI person on the Council. I reckon it would mean a lot to the ATSI peoples. On yer, hey!

I do not agree, coucil is about roads, developments, dog poo, fences, footpaths, rounabouts and rubbish. Jack shows no real interest in such things.

I actually regret commenting, not because of the sentiment of my comment but because the post has been edited to include harsher language than it had then.

By commenting I look to be accepting language which suggests Jack is unsuitable for the role because of his sexuality. I agree with much of Hillbilly's post, but not that.

It is about time there were ATSI representatives on council but noone should be elected as a token - Cairns has many ATSI people who could do the role proud - I saw an admirable statement from Yodi Batzke somewhere saying while she was ATSI, she was not trying for council as a representative of the indigenous population, but for the whole population. That would be a pleasant change from past councillors who thought they were there to defend the white ratepayers from the rampaging natives, not to mention poofs, greenies and women. Dear old Bob Burgess in his pith helmut sadly wasn't taking the pith - he meant every word - yet we never did hire monkeys to denut the coconuts.

Destiny Prophet,

There is absolutely no negative inference to be gleaned about whatever Wilkie-Jans sexuality might be. Gay or straight, he's a wackjob fair dinkum.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I agree with Hillbilly's comments here. I didn't think JAWJ was a serious candidate when he first announced. He sounds like a self-promoter (yes, I know that's a pollie) but also sounds averse to work. Campaigning is work. Preparing for, and attending council meetings is work. When that started to think in, he realised he was going to be the object of ridicule - hence the fabricated story about mystery men.

You've called him on it good, HB. If the story is true, he has the obligation to make a police report. The absence of this is evidence enough that it's all made up nonsense.

So the big question is.
Who is going to put their hat in the ring.
Sno Brown is gone.
Who's the next brave hard working/traveling soul to represent the long suffering folk of the northern beaches?
Any out of work snake chalmers out there?

Gee anonymous I seem to spend more and more time unravelling your hieroglyphics which is entertaining in its own right. I wouldn't call your pin up hero Margaret a school kid by a long, long shot but at least she can spell. And as far as finding someone desperate enough to fuck you, well, good luck. Try about 3 a.m. at Gilligans.

"...a snotty nose pofter..??? I wonder what one of these things are? I imagine it to be some sort of sucking instrument for vacuuming catarrh away from the proboscis.

So King despite his history romps it in. Makes you wonder about the calibre of moral values the voters of this town have these days. Looks like you can publicly say what you like, put down whom you like and still bathe in the warm glow of your adoring followers.

Congratulations to Newman and PALMER - so the rich get richer and the workers get NOTHING! Day 1 of the 100 days has begun - let's see what was done today.

I see very few of the regular moaners on here have anything to say regarding the historic LNP victory in Queensland and Cairns? Shame it's too late for Val & Co. to take any lessons from this. Finally, the tide has turned and the future is looking very bright. I hope all you lefties enjoy the new era which, lets face it, your own actions and attitudes have helped bring about as the people turn away from you in disgust!

Curly Joe said...

Palmer will want some returns for his money he splashed around. It will be interesting to see what Newman gives him.

Ron said...

Congratulations to Clive Palmer. He just bought himself a Government.

Queensland, the banana republic does it again with a return to the 1970s. Campbell Newman of the LNP was accused of corruption during the election campaign, but was cleared by the Criminial Justice Commission. The same Criminal Justice Commission which had their funding slashed, and were almost disbanded during the Borbidge LNP Government of 1996-1998 for daring to investigate charges of corruption of that Government. Queenslanders reacted with righteous indignation screaming of Labor's "negative" campaigning and raced out to record their votes of protest. As a result a record vote is returned for Newman, and on election night, the media interview billionaire, life member of the LNP and main funder of the LNP, Clive Palmer. The mining magnate donated at least $3 million for the LNP campaign. He gives a gloating, confident interview, talking of his contempt for the ALP and his plans for Queensland. Immediately afterwards, Anna Bligh, the ALP Leader suddenly and without warning announces her resignation.
It's all like a script from a horror movie, but this is Queensland and the Joh years are back in a huge, ugly way.

Buzz said...

Newman's first test is Palmer's plans to mine an area near Alpha which threatens the Bimblebox nature reserve. No prizes for guessing what Newman will do. It's back to the Joh years with a vengence.

Kay said...

Palmer the Fat Controller will send Thomas the Tank (aka Newman) up the track and down the track, then back up the track again, and down again. Da de dah.

ROFL Gavin gobsnot King is on the Mackenzie show this morning (Monday) blaming "journalists and the ALP" for campaigning against him. His own colleagues! What does that say about him?? And does he remember his own vicious relentless campaign against Val Schier? What goes around, comes around, you unscrupulous scoundrel.

Curly Joe said...

Looking forward to giving gobsnot a bit of "hurry up, you maggot, where are all the promises...". Can't believe he was on Mackenzie this morning whining and wailing and wringing his hands and beating his bony chest about the election campaign. The whinging, moaning, effete, effeminate, rat like closet sociopath makes me sick.

winners are grinners, and you mob of Labor thugs can cry and cry and cry and cry, "LOSERS"

Bob R. said...

Really Anonymous? And who might just be the REAL loser hey? What if Newman wanted to sell off the hospitals to American corporations for privatisation? Who do you think is going to oppose it? The 7 ALP members of Parliament? How about the 2 KAP members? Hmmmmm? It's quite on the cards now, thanks to fuckwits like yourself. Yes Anonymous think of the great joy and ecstacy people like you and your family will experience when you have to mortgage your home to pay for a chronic illness, like the Americans do. Thrill yourself to your backbone, you half wit, Anonymous, at the reality that you have given a Government the power to do what they want without restraint of any kind. I hope it ends up with your financial ruin! Oh, and if you think you can go out in the streets and demonstrate, Newman is going to raise fines, so a little demo might cost you the sale of the family car plus all your savings. Yeah when you jerk off tonight, think just how clever you have been, you fuckwit!

bogan said...

"...the whinging, moaning effete, effeminate rat like closet sociopath..." Now I know why whenever I hear the name "Gavin King" I automatically think of TALON. I reckon everyone should keep a can in the car with them.

Blogger, although you state there is nothing wrong with Mr Wilkie-Jans being a self-described "flaming queen", your photo caption, “Imagine this sitting at the council table,” strongly suggests otherwise. Your use of the word “this” implies he is a thing, an object of derision. Maybe the reason Mr Wilkie-Jans isn’t keen to go to the police is that the threats he allegedly received have made him too scared to do so. It's not unusual for gay people to live in fear, and your homophobic blog hasn't helped.

Jack Andrew Wilkie-Jans said...

I don't know why the CP said I live in Edge Hill, I live in the Beaches ...though lately taken to staying in town so as I can get to work in the rain! Ross Parisi has announced his candidacy for Division 9 and I am more than confident that someone of his calibre and experience is running and have pledged my support for his campaign. I was considering pulling out ages ago when the ALP pushed the elections back a month, I will need April to focus on preparing an exhibition. The elections were eating too into the opportunities I have within the industry I have a career in, and to be honest, didn't need too much influencing. There will be other elections and I don't expect to die any time soon. We have a record number of candidates stand up so its fair to say that while we have been neglected by Labor, that at least there is still a great deal of local drive to get Cairns up and running!

Now the State elections has provided Queensland with renewed hope, we now turn with no time to relax to the Council elections. What I feel Cairns wants to see in a Mayor and Councillors is: integrity, punctuality and ability to assist. Cairns is growing up and becoming more metropolitan and more city people coming here; so in one sense our Mayor needs to be an all rounder capable of delivering a vision. I think its more important to brand Cairns very carefully, what Mayor Val Schier has achieved so far in securing publicity for Cairns is great- our Mayor needs to be/remain being a person who can inspire the community to come to the table too, which is why we all need to help lay down the foundations for the branding and publicity that has already happened. However, our Mayor at this time of fragile change needs to keep the locals on board as well and remain the essence of locality. We expect our State MPs to fix the state first and in the mean time will be relying heavily on Council for guidance and re-affirmation of community spirit. I think we've had enough change in representation and I do think some stability is needed. I think it may be fine to change reps. on council provided they have the contacts needed to carry on and pick up where the current mob have left off- sadly in elections there's only promise of change and upheaval and undoing for the mere sake of re-doing. As far as I see it, Val doesn't have to prove anything, its the other candidates who do. Furthermore we want those qualities and the ability and willingness to front with the above, without the Political Jargon that is used to gloss campaigns, we want involvement not blah blah blah.

Hillbilly,

I have to apologise - while I still think your language too harsh in respect to Jack's sexuality, in all other respects you were too kind and generous.
