What are all the Hillbilly's on the McKenzie show going to do now ? There will be nothing to whinge about and no one to blame for their crappy, unhappy lives.

All the vindictive rednecks will be crowing with glee for a few weeks until they realise they will be no better off and there will be no one to blame this time.Hahaha...poor deluded fools !

Meantime for most of us life will continue as usual...

Mr. Ramsey said...

On the bright side : Leu, Cooper and Pyne look like they might still be around.

Hallelujah..coo ta Cairns, Now I can recoup my losses when Capital Globe backed up by Pervez Musharaff (previous dictator of Pakistan) went broke. You stupid, silly fools. Now you can pay me for those blocks of land at 6-8 Hartley Strret. Yeah, Ritchie Bates, paid up Member of the ALP has sworn to do this. Heheheh. Then you can build your pissant new theatre on another of my blocks of land (yeah Ritchie Bates has had a fat thinking about this..hey not that he is corrupt or anything, just a bit stupid...you know all that sport and sport and and sport and sport).
Yeah I phoned Ritche before he was elected and I laid down a few rules, he agreed, he agreed, but that dastard,m Mike O'Loughlin did not, and I heard a woman over his voice...Janine someone? She called him "darling Richie". Well then you can dredge the Cairns inlet and allow my ships in. I should make a packet out of all of this. But hey as Ritchei said, "White elephant, hey? or Monument to an ego."

My predicition.Rates will go up as in the real world things cost more everyday and council have to pay for it somehow, manning will slash and burn, privatise out door staff in the council,Taylor Point will have houses on it by this time next year, and the CEP site will have a hotel on it as it is to close to the city for industrial ship use.One positive thing, cochrane fell on her decieving back stabbing sword and is retired.See Gilmour at Tablelands may loose.

Yes Anonymous 21:00 you and your bogan mates can now send us back to the last century. Let's see how you can replace the 160 million dollars of funding this town was going to get that you fuckwits have just thrown away.

Maybe I should post the same shyte as the bogans, then my posts won't be rejected.

This place is getting as bad as the Cairns Blog!

JOHN MACKENZIE'S HILLBILLY WATCH said...

If Linda Cooper has won, it will be hard for anyone to claim this was "a vote against the Entertainment Precinct". Pyne and Leu were two of the biggest supporters of the EP, and they were back with big wins. And Coops was subjected to the most direct attack because of her being the "swing vote", including a direct assault from the two biggest bogan candidates, Sheppard and that Jenny Glaze moron. And she beat 'em handily. Tells me there is widespread support for the EP from the "young" divisions, people with kids in the arts and other thoughtful people. I think there are arguments to build on here.

Despite the continual rant of the hillbillies that "no consultation" has been done on the EP and other Val-inspired projects, most here understand that these projects had a great deal of consultation.

It's incumbent now on everyone to keep their shoulders to the wheel. As consultation moves forward on the EP, there can be no case made for remodel of the Civic Theater, or even an inadequate facility on Hartley Street. People need to reject such plans from this the new council.

HBW, I am at a loss to accept that the people of Cairns have knocked back $157million on a shovel ready project. It will be at least 2 years before another project on a different site will be shovel ready. Masthead Manning will definately build a rectangular stadium no matter what but it will be two years before it will be shovel ready. In the mean time HBW you, Cueball and the Misogynist Prick will have to sharpen up on your rugby league anologies otherwise you won't understand how to have a conversation with Masthead. Also, HBW, I think you can run a competition on how long our great Council CEO, Lyn Russell will last. My money says she will last 6 weeks. Charlie.

lets just hope that Bob Manning isn't making his new team do the initiations his poor apprentice bakers got... screwdriver anyone?

Dina said...

Of course Manning will be making changes to Council staff, on Byrnes directive of course. Wonder how long Council Minutes and Agendas stay up online as well. Can't have the people of Cairns wondering about certain developers proposals now, can we?

Dina said...

Hillbilly, the Entertainment Precinct is dead. Dead. Gone and buried.

I can see Kevin Byrne in the back room before closed Council meetings laying down the agenda for the day. Ugly developments on the hillsides and Taylor Point, city place mess up again, glossy apartments on the gifted (no more) waterfront site (guess who gets the penthouses?) Meanwhile the bogans who voted because of the fear campaign will get nothing. Thanks Val for the last 4 years, you are an amazing controlled woman and probably deserve better than to represent the Cairns people (the bogans, that is).

h. bosch said...

So we're all starting to understand the danger the bogan poses society? Once a minority that was the object of ridicule, now cashed up via Australia's reliance on construction (since we have nothing else to make) and the mining boom. The bogan caused the GFC (think McMansion, the must have it now regardless of cost mentality) and loathe anything intellectual, arty, or just too difficult to comprehend. They are everywhere, like a zombie apocalypse, constantly pulling out in front of you from a Maccas or KFC in their shiny twin cab 4WD ute. Lazing in front of their 80 inch plasma digesting the latest 'news' on glittery morning shows. They're not going anywhere so get used to it, and just like zombies, they require a bullet in the head.

Well the Mackenzie LNP talkback program can take the blame for the ultimate rejection of the free money for the CEP.Look at the demographics of that program.White, over 50,male,bitter,Liberal or old Country party hacks who should be in jail who have fantasies of the old days under JBP.All have a common thread,if they are female, progressive, visionary than get rid of them.

Wooh, Kev Byrne's Nanny above, you really have it in for Richie Bates with your invidious accusations. I, too am disappointed he chose to run with the Unity Team, but the bottom line is this is a free country where we have the freedom of political association.

Well it's time to make sure we all attend meetings and respond to community consultations as we did with the CEP. We have the same power as before. Please keep up the good work with the blog. Cairns is a great place, the new council can not take that from us. We made it through big bad Byrnes once before, we can do it again. It's the people of Cairns that make it special, Mayors come and go. Make friends with your new councillor and propose logical right brain arguments and we may have a chance. What about a working bee at the Civic, lick of paint and shell be fine!

Every cloud has a silver lining, and this one is that Allan Blake has been now been removed from the trough. And it won't be long before this lot starts infighting. I knew Manning when he was at the CPA, a grater autocratic narcissus you will never find, nobody could work with him, and the joy when he was removed from the CEO position was unanimous. The leopard does not change his spots, and many of the disparate Unity councillors we now have will not put up with that for long. I will watch with interest.

Spotted leopard said...

T. Asquith, I know exactly what you are talking about, because a friend of mine worked at the CPA when Manning was there. She was living on her nerves, dreading going into work each day, and had to go onto anti-depressants because of Manning and his tyrannical manner. He played favorites who told tales to him about other staff, and the entire atmosphere became toxic. Yes indeed, the Unity Councillors dont know what they have in store. Nor do the CRC staff. I, too, will be watching with the most keen interest.

Let me see, he's 67 now which makes him 71 when he's kicked out in the next election. Nice to see Cairns voters choosing someone so young and with such vision for our community. Of course at that age he may not even make the distance.....

How long do you reckon it will be before Richie 'turncoat' Bates jumps ship? Surely a man of such principles can't support a tyrant like old Bob for too long? Getting a bit tired of the old farts like Wazza and despot Bob bolstering their super at our expense. Gonna be a long 4 years, but at least Cairns gets to go backwards in time. Bowen might even become more progressive than us. No CEP, no $$$ for CBH, no Bruce Highway upgrade, no hope. The talking toupee may as well retire now.

I predict rate rises, no CEP whatsoever, a pay rise for the mayor and councilors and big payouts as top council executives are being forced to leave.

The new council cannot and will not do much about unemployment or law and order.

So all the regular whingers like Scotty Bitchy Boydy Scott, Karen- can't sing Pearl the Parrot Pollard, Phil Crockpot, John Smith, Bob Jones, Shorty the racist, Bob the screw, Bob the fuckwit and all the other narrow- minded imbeciles out there, please stop polluting the on-line commentary at the Compost and the airwaves with your boring, ignorant crap.

Take it straight to the top, to your mates in the state government and the council. They will look after you, for sure. Good luck, hahaha.

Oh happy days ! Paridise on earth has arrived !

Don't be disappointed, if life as we know it, won't change too drastically....

History shows that male mayors die in office. Manning has a grey look about him, suggesting advanced cardiovascular disease. He will not survive a term as mayor, notwithsanding the implosion if his council once he starts dictating!

athena said...

Anonymous, I dont believe any concessions should be made for Mannings age. He is a wealthy retiree who has come back to stick his snout in the public trough for four years. He and his supporters harried and denigrated Val from the very day she was elected. The same treatment should be meted out to old Masthead who had the arrogance to state that he and his wife fly to Melbourne and Sydney to see shows. What contempt that statement has revealed for the people of Cairns! What utter disregard for the safety of Cairns people who are being forced to use a decrepit, falling down old theatre, long past its use by date. The man is only there because Byrne and company have "use" of him, and as such, he will be a compliant puppet. His reputation as a control freak who played favorites at the old CPA still lingers on around the town. As someone wrote above, a leopard doesn't change his spots either. Give it a few months and there will be infighting and hostility within the ranks of the Unity Team. "Unity", but not for long!

athena said...

Miss Chief, I am getting a little weary of the way Richie Bates is being targetted. He is only one member of the Unity Team, and is pretty well powerless in the scheme of things. If you want to attack, then look at the drivers and shakers, the power brokers and controllers behind the Unity Team.

Not one ... and you call the 80% that didn't want any more of Val, Bogans???

Mr. Ramsey said...

Why do we need a rectangular stadium ? Can't people travel to Brisbane or Melbourne to see a game ? If it's good enough for Bob, then it should be good enough for the Bogan.

Hail Mayor Bob, Byrne's bitch and the Bogan's Big Brother!

Anonymous said...

An example of when manning was CEO at the CPA: Any airport officer who had to travel on CPA airport business would not be told whether their travel arrangements had been approved by him until the afternoon before at the earliest, making planning very difficult. It was a deliberate 'controlling' ploy to make sure everyone knew who pulled the strings. This is the behaviour of a small minded, under-confident micro-manager, ie: one who is NOT born to lead.
Interesting times ahead; He won't change, it's in his DNA to behave in this way, but Cairns Regional Council is not the CPA (nor the Army) ... and divisional councillors will not be his subordinate underlings - even those who stood on a Unity ticket.

T. Asquith said...

Now we're back to the future; I guess this means Villa Romana gets to take possession of the public footpath again.

Mr. Ramsey said...

Congratulations Bob, well done ,after a 4 year non-stop anti-Val campaign.

Hope ( for your sake) that you'll last the distance and don't have to face up to the ugly, ill- mannered rabble that populate the Mac show ?

By the way, Wail Oil, according to The ECQ web-site Bob only has slighty over 50 % of the vote, not 80 %. Seems like the result has gone to your head already. How much " decency" was Val shown after she defeated old Kev ?

I wish that all your great expectations come through. If not, I hope that you will give Bob the same treatment Val got.

Miss Chief said...

Athena - suck it up. I don't have a lot of time for people who will sell their souls and go against their principles just for a seat on council or in parliament. It smells of desperation and something Idiot Boy Tony Abbott would do. Richie could have run independent. I will "attack" anyone I like thank you very much. I don't believe anyone from Unity held a gun to his head.

Miss Chief said...

Whale beefhead - you're not the sharpest tool in the shed are you? This isn't cairns.com.au. You won't find many Manning fans here. I have tissues at the ready to wipe the egg off your face when things are stuffed up right royally.

Can't agree with the comment on 'young' divisions Hillbilly and when I finally get my computer back from warranty repairs this week will post further!

There is however an interesting north/south divide with Manning strongest in the southern divisions and Val in the north. Port Douglas was easily the strongest booth for Val by a LONG way!

The fly on the ointment of the north/south theory is Division 6 where both Manning and Cooper scored highly? The divisions here are not age and also defy the CEP rationale?!

3 out of 5 councillors standing for re-election were successful. Had Cochrane and Gregory stood in their own divisions for re-election they would also have been successful!

Sick of trying to type on this iPhone, however Ann Onymous I suggest you think hard on the financial aspects of de-amalgation! Among the impacts of the GFC the PD cash cow to fund Douglas Shire has been decimated!

Based on current salary for Mayor Bob will receive $1 Million for his 4 year term in office. I trust HBW will report if we are getting value for money. With the demise of the entertainment precinct he will be starting $150M behind in what he can gain for Cairns.

Curly Joe said...

Whale Oil Beef Hooked, You must be insane if you think we are going to "Congratulate" Manning. He doesn't deserve any congratulations. He was swept into office on the back of four years of Mackenzie's hate campaign against Val Schier and given so much money to campaign with, he had an easy, effortless win. He is nothing but a money hungry opportunist with an ugly reputation who wanted an easy win and another turn at the public money trough. As for all the Unity Councillors, I hope that some of them may get to know that screwdriver.

Kay said...

Now now Curly Joe, that is a wee tad bit nasty. I agree though no congratulations are in order for old Masthead. It wasn't a fair election and he had an easy and effortless election. Masthead won't have the media flogging the beJesus out of him, day after day, week after week, month after month either, like Val had to endure. Like King and Entsch he will have an easy run, cossetted and cushioned by a supportive media machine. He will have it very easy making his million dollars.

athena said...

I said in earlier comments that misogynism had extended its nasty tentacles across to Margaret Cochrane and would affect her election chances. Gavin King assisted with his ageist and sexist tag of "Nanna", which became commonplace around town following his column. John Mackenzie also passed negative, sexually stereotyped comments on his program concerning Margaret and women in general. Margaret herself had ample opportunity to challenge Mackenzie over his anti-women comments, as she was a guest on his program (free of charge)for many weekly appearances. The fact that she didn't, saw her as another victim of rampant misognyism.

Ron said...

Yep old Butch Manning will have it dead easy. No media on the constant attack year after year. No media to incite hatred into the people. No media interfering into the affairs of Council and telling Council what to do. No media playing favorites with councillors. No media telling people over and over how terrible their lives are and that it is all the fault of one person, the Mayor. Too right old Butch will have a cushy term in office which the bastard knows damn well otherwise he wouldnt have taken the job. Mackenzie will go into his love talk and convince the unwary that Butch is the second coming of Jesus Christ himself. I got one thing to laugh at though and that is the fact that those newly elected councillors are in for a hell of a shock. Wait and see what Butch does to them all.

It's just going to be 4 years of nothing except gifts to developer mates. Let's just hope Townsville doesn't get too much further ahead of Cairns in those 4 years.

Kitchen Slut - Please save us your sage advice "to think hard on the financial aspects of de-amalgamation"- what do you think we've been doing up here for the past four years?... playing tiddlywinks?

Tony Hillier said...

The most depressing aspect is that there will be NO mainstream meedya surveillance, and the vast majority of Cairns's boganic ever burgeoning 'burban popularion will remain steadfastly apathetic and blissfully oblivious to local issues.

Old Masthead and his corpulent corporate mates (viz Slash & Byrne & co) will have a dream run, with no one asking the hard questions, save for a few blog sites like HBW, which are only read by the converted.

A return to the Bjelke-Petersen and Byrne eras is the depressing scenario, with dodgy developers flocking to Cairns like bees to a honeypot as the CBD (including the CEP waterfront site that could have been the people's for perpetuity) is carved up for residential mausoleums like Harbour Lights.

Cairns has so much potential. It could become a real jewel of the north, a true international city, a vibrant, happening hub of South Pacific arts & culture. Instead, I fear it will become a soulless citadel inhabited by fat cats, and hedonistic backpackers.

The main imperative of Mannings Council will be to assist Byrne and whoever else invested in his failed corporation, recoup their losses. Wait and see what developments are approved.

Curly Joe said...

It is guaranteed Anonymous above. The creed of Unity is "one for all and all for one" as Richie Bates has reminded us so many times, like the mantra of a baboon. Dissent is not on with the Unity Team. What Manning/Byrne says, will go. We do have so far four Independents however who may prove able to keep Cairns on the straight and narrow. Theirs will be an onerous task, faced with the dodgey developments soon to be lodged with the Council and the pressures exerted on their quick approval. They won't be able to vote anything down, but through serious questioning, may alert members of the public.

John Stoltenberg said...

Will be interesting to watch Bates and Cooper slip and slide all over the place depending on which way the wind blows. Wonder what comrade Bates will do next time….. guess we’ll just have to wait and see what is the most ‘popular’ option.

Social media and rampant self-entitlement have changed the game.

It's all about perception now with reality and fact barely acknowledged.

Progressive political thinkers are going to have to work on ensuring perception matches reality.

I don't hold much hope though - rampant self-entitlement seems to have created a situation where all opinion is now regarded as equal which it is not. Uninformed and disinformed opinion is not equal - it is just bullshit.

Sick of Elections, this is all very very mild and relatively inoffensive compared to the years and years of abuse, public villification and persecution dished out to Val Schier. Mackenzie started his abuse the very Monday after she was elected and is still at it. Is it that you think women are fair game in the bullying stakes, but think men should be treated like Gods? Are you rabidly gay and hate women? Are you Gavin King? Allow me to post some comments in the wee hours of the morning. The campaign against Val Schier was so vindictive and so intense over the entire four year period that literally anyone could have won the Mayoralty in Cairns. That a septegenarian, retired former public servant has been effortlessly elected was a foregone conclusion. The sheer ruthlessness directed at Val Schier raised suspicions immediately in the minds of many, that there was an "agenda" behind the campaign, and that "agenda" involved money. With the collapse of a certain corporation in Cairns, the thinking is that a number of men have lost money and plenty of it, and a plan of action has long been devised to try and recoup those losses. The people of Cairns are not sophisticated people capable of indepth, critical thinking and easily swayed by vindictive and emotive missiles such as "monument to an ego". That they have been left with an ageing and fast deteriorating Civic Theatre with no money to build a new one, has apparently escaped their comprehension. Should there be a major accident at the Civic Theatre involving injury and loss of life, it is even doubtful that the people would understand how badly they have been conned. It is unfortunate therefore, that we now have a ruthless, mercenary group of men who will be behind the scenes of this new Council, manipulating and driving it to achieve their own financial goals. The ageing Mayor is only in office for one term, and looking at various members of the Unity Team, and their ages, it is also apparent that they too, will only be in Council for one term. I notice with a certain amount of suspicion, one lone ALP person sitting in amongst Unity, and can't help but ponder whether this person will become the "scapegoat" if anything goes bellyup. Given the sheer amount of cunning and planning involved, it is likely this person is there to be useful should the need arise. I note some "Independents" have been elected, yet I detect more than an element of self-serving protectionism amongst some of these and they will quickly fall into line with Unity. Looking at the big picture, it would seem, on the surface anyway, that those who have been plotting and scheming these past few years, may have made it. We can expect to see within a short period of time, many development proposals raced through Council with a minimum of attention. It will be left to this blog, and perhaps other bloggers to question and reveal where corruption is occurring.

Kay said...

Nicely summed up, as per usual Liz. Thank you.

Tony Hillier said...

We have to face the sad fact that the vast majority of local residents do not give a monkey's toss about the CEP or the Civic Theatre, come to that. Their idea of culture is a takeaway video or a visit to Cairns Central or Earlville to see the latest American formulaic blockbuster.

Oh one last thing I particularly noticed was that several of the Unity Team including the Mayor, are of the age where they will only serve one term. They won't be accountable to the electors at the next election. This should again raise further suspicions.

SO
with the AEC fronting the democracy illusion everything is possible ... but nothing really changes ... the outgoing Mayor closet ALP ... the incoming one defacto LNP ... both show ponies for the puppet masters behind the veil ... lets see if wee Robbie ... unlike his big slugger mate Kev ... can withstand the intense scrutiny of the independent councillors ... and the Community ... who have not yet awakened to reality

Well, Val Schier won the last election and certainly didn't get a free ride and let democracy rule. Neither should Manning, though we know he'll get it from the towns two major media outlets.

The Council should be so robust as to accept criticism and answer it with facts, just like Val did. We all assume that Manning's actions will not be beyond reproach and that favours for mates will not be the norm. I for one hope that's not true. As long as the Council is open and honest, that's all we'd ask for. If they're not, they should be hung out to dry for everyone to see.

Subject: Thank you and farewell

Hello everyone

Have packed up, handed in my keys etc and am ready to head off for a new chapter of my life.

I would like to thank you for your professionalism and the support that you have shown to me as your mayor over the past 4 years. We have an extraordinary staff here at Council who have operationalised the strategic direction of Council really well. I like to think that I have been the sort of mayor who has worked with the CEO to enable individual staff to reach their full potential; to shine.

It always saddened me that a perception was created - by media coverage in the first 18 months or so and a couple of other factors - that this was not a highly functional Council. Nothing could be further from truth and one only has to look at the many achievements and innovations of the last 4 years – many recognised with state and national awards - in a time of unprecedented economic downturn that was beyond the control of councillors or staff.

I wish you well with a new Council and know that you will face the challenges ahead with good humour, good will and a high level of performance.

Whilst I will be taking a break I will still be around and would welcome staff coming up and saying hello and having a yarn.

Warmest regards

Val

Ex – Mayor!!

What happened to her with the years of bullying and abuse dished out by Mackenzie and King was just both unforgettable and unforgiveable. I hear some Unity Councillors have already whinged and moaned over some of the comments posted on this particular thread of Hillbilly, the weak milksops! You have to seriously wonder if they get all upset at just a few comments on one blog during three days after their election, HOW THE HELL would they cope with four full years of it without a break? Seems to me as if we have just got ourselves elected some pissweak spineless weasels who won't be able to take it when the pressure really turns up.

Another fucking post of mine refused, it's quite obvious what your agenda is hillbilly, you're writing these blog anons yourself.

You obviously don't like dissent, as your ego has outgrown your brain.

What a pity you don't have the guts to admit it.

Just a last comment, if I may add it, on the election result. Rob Pyne has done some analysing on why the popular Independents didn't do so well. It would appear highly likely that people believed that to vote Manning in as Mayor they had to also vote for Unity's Councillor in their Division. They did not realise they could vote for Manning and an Independent candidate. I would tend to agree with this reasoning.

As someone wrote on another blog "After four years of the Val hatefest, a dead dog could have won the Mayoralty".

It's a pity at the moment that developers have so little money to actually do anything. It's not like the old days when as soon as you got Council approval the bank rubber stamped your development loan. With all the bankruptcies, banks up here are incredibly stingy with their money.

This will be the most inactive Council in history.

the old gray mare is still disalosional and sounds like that commo in Canberra.

Oh dear, the most in active council ever, hey. Well I'm sure the bogans, hillbillies, rednecks etc etc. will just have to die slow painful deaths because a vocal minority didn't get their way. Anyway time will tell the world didn't stop spinning while Val was mayor it probably won't while bob is mayor ( insert witty insult here) hopefully for everyone it will end as the Mayan calander "predicts" later this year.

Never mind Anonymous, the dead dog (well, a half dead one anyway) has won the Mayoralty. Yep old Butch will get his team running till their balls drop. Trouble is half of them have dropped balls down to their knees already.

Some of the unity Councillors can barely dress themselves in the mornIng, let alone function on council.

I just read the post there by Liz whoever she is. She has made the most sense of anyone here.

Well, we on the Northern Beaches have ended up with an old Real Estate Agent come Body Corporate Manager and an ex Car Salesman looking for a job. These are included with the least respected careers in Australia (refer Morgan Gallop Poll). If only the voters believed the polls i.e. "Bob's the Boss" courtesy of the Cairns Post, then how did they get this one wrong when voting? New council also comprises builders, business executives, re-tread deputy Mayor from most disliked Byrne Council and boring Bob as leader. They can no go forth and develop the hillslopes, rainforests and beachside land with council blessing.

Jeez this would have to be one of the fucken oldest looking Councils we've ever had. Look at all them bloody old farts with their noses in the trough looking to top up their super before retiring and pissing off from Cairns I reckon. Yep, they wont be fucken well hanging around being ACCOUNTABLE to the public will they? I mean look at the all the old farts? Soon as their four years are up, and they have rooted Cairns, they will be off for the Gold Coast, SO LONG SUCKERS.

Unity are arch conservative, bogan. They never endorse very young candidates. They traditionally prefer older white males from preferably British or European backgrounds. They have a very typical line-up this time around with several older people close to or over the retirement age.

ECKERS said...

Typical low brow comment from you bogan, but I dont expect anything better. Stick to your badgering of your mate Neil and give us a few real laughs. As per usual, Liz's comments are the most thought provoking. I always look forward to reading her opinion and thinking over what she says.

Oh let me post the 100th comment! We are already seeing the results of the Council Election in that Premier Newman has just announced a new performing arts theatre will be built in Brisbane. There goes our Entertainment Precinct funding! Cairns deserves its title as "BOGANVILLE" because sooner or later the whining and chanting will start up. "Cairns gets nothing, we are the forgotten North. Everything goes to the S.E. Corner." As has been pointed out, the exact same series of events took place back in 1995 when the State Government offerred to build a brand new hospital in Cairns. The people fought bitterly against it,so the State Government pulled back, and gave it to Townsville. Then within a few years the people started whinging about needing a new hospital and moaning that they "get nothing". This sort of irrational, almost demented behaviour is astonishing to us rational people, but to many Cairns people, it is normal behaviour and thinking that they keep on repeating. We have to live with it or think about moving to a city of saner people.

Diana, it would be interesting to know just how many long-time residents are considering the latter option expressed in your concluding sentence.
