SOME LOCAL CANDIDATES SHOWING MASSIVE ETHICAL LAPSES - IS THIS THE END OF ETHICAL LOCAL ELECTIONS?

The sleaziness of Federal and State politics, which has previously not polluted local council elections, has now become the norm for some candidates in the Cairns Regional Council elections.

Much of the community discussion has focused on longtime ALP leader and perennial candidate Richie Bates, who apparently has never seen a "team" he can't support - as long as there might be a job for him.  A member of Val Schier's Cairns 1st Team in the 2008 council election and roundly defeated, Bates then pushed hard to garner the ALP preselection as MP for Cairns in the state election.  Dissed by the party in favour of Kirsten Lesina, in apparent desperation has signed on to the Byrne/Manning Unity Team.  If Robert Mugabe were running in North Queensland, Bates would be there with his hand up.

Sadly, he's showing what seems to be his typical lack of personal morality by now "toeing the line" set by the Unity Team despite his known personal antipathy to such ideas.  The latest of his positions to change violently is his known, published stance in opposition to more dredging of the Trinity Inlet.  Bates has now so descended into the sludge that he called into Cueball MacKenzie this morning to announce and confirm his changed position.  Cueball ensured that Bates eat as much shit as possible by pointedly telling Bates "so you've changed your previous position", and Bates dutifully grovelled out a "yes" to the dark master.

Bates has no shame, and no ethics.  And no vote from us.  He's the poster boy for the Worst of Politics.  Should the Unity Team endorse child abuse or sex with marmosets, Bates can be counted on to agree.

And just to ensure the record is clear on Marge Cochrane and the Entertainment Precinct - while she now has built her campaign on the idea that the approved plan is "should not be built on the waterfront", Marge Cochrane voted "AYE" on this site when it came to council.  ALONG WITH EVERYONE ELSE.    Running away from their votes now? Not what community leaders do . . .at least not with some kind of bullshit explanation.

I must protest Mr Hillbilly! I believe Ritchie Bates is free to join whatever team he wants to and to follow whatever policies he likes. I didn't hear him on the Mackenzie show so can't comment. What I wouldn't like would be if he tried to ingratiate himself with Mackenzie.

I agree that Ritchie Bates can join whatever team he wants etc. etc. but I can't agree with him blaming Val as he has done for four years of unemplayment lines. Val had to lead a Council in which she had no majority of support from Councillors and which proved to be totally disfunctional in the end and they should all be voted out of Office. At least Val tried to keep the Council going ahead. We have a project like the CEP which can start immediately thereby employing at least 300 people and Ritchie and his group are going to stop it because they don't like the site. Charlie.

Maybe Ritchie will support the CEP if it includes a train station.

I don't understand what is so hard about this CEP. Its looks like all its doing is deviding our community. Just put the fucking thing where we all know where it should go, and that is at Munro Martin Park, Its a park that only gets used twice a year and its full of fucken low lifes. Shit it dosn't take a fucken university degree to work out its the best spot, and the city owns the land, just build the fucken thing, and we can all move on to something else to bitch about

Actually Mr. Last Anonymous, you're wrong on several counts.

The CRC doesn't own Munroe Martin Park.

It's accepted by almost everyone that the EP needs to be adjacent to the Convention Centre, for added space required by them.

The Florence/Sheridan street area is the worst for available car parking in the city.

And even Kevin Byrne's council found that the cost at the Munro Martin Park site for the building would be substantially higher, due to the need for more sound insulation. This site is almost directly under the northern landing pattern for Cairns Airport.

Get a grip, and learn a little!

I did catch it, but perhaps cueball is running two shows, cause what I heard was that he supports it should there be "bang for buck" (a saying that always makes me giggle) ... Your incredibly pro Val at the moment, what happened to your indiscriminate spraying of all (the main reason we read this blog) has Hillbilly got a crush?

Munro Martin Park was left for the people of Cairns to be used as community parkland "in perpetuity" (forever). It is the only green space left within the city proper outside the Esplanade. Sure it is under utilised at the moment, but citizens of the future may have all sorts of uses for it.

Miss Munro and Miss Martin, daughters of former Mayors, donated much to Cairns including that park to remain as green space in the town they loved. Sadly the Calvary Hospital which benefitted much from their generosity still saw fit to tear down their house and put a new building there which increased the sale price to Ramsey no doubt - much like the Anglican Church sold off the land at Trinity Beach, left to them by a wonderful lady on the understanding it stay basically undeveloped and be used for underprivileged youth.
Munro Martin Park should forever remain as what the ladies donated it for and a reminder of some of the wonderful people who built the town.
AND, with higher density living taking over the CBD that green space will eventually be properly utilised.

If the city doesn't own the park, who does? I ask this seriously.

Who pays rates on the land and why did the city give it up?

I have lived here for 30 years and have a sense of respect and honour for the wishes of both the Munro/Martin sisters and Mrs Blessas (Taylor Point). That the wishes of these ladies have been brushed aside and ignored is repugnant to me. I am appalled that there are people who think it's just fine to override their incredibly generous bequeathments, all for the sake of $$$.

Shame. If they were your parents wishes being shat on - how would you feel?

CRC cannot develop MM Park due to the deed of trust, so relax. Grandad Manning is all talk and will still back the proposed CEP site when he easily wins the mayoral vote ahead of Val.

ROFL saw where Manning "slammed" Val on her promise not to raise rates all those years ago. Well, come on Manning, where's your promise? Shout it out loud mate, don't be shy."'I PROMISE TO RAISE YOUR RATES IF ELECTED". There you're guaranteed to win 100% of the vote.

My word VOTE 1 JOE BLAKE, that's a bloody sure fire winner in the Council Election. Brilliant thinking mate.
ELECT ME AND I PPOMISE I WILL RAISE YOUR RATES.
Yeah mate, I will too. Nod. Nod. No wucken furries, that's one promise guaranteed to be kept.
People will be knocking down doors voting for me. Yep I can see them all hey, tears streaming down their eyes as they all say, "That bogan is a good, decent, honest man. He keeps his promises hey not like all the other dishonest ones."
