|BOB MANNING NOW DISCOVERING MANAGING ELECTED|
OFFICIALS MUCH DIFFERENT THAN BULLYING
CAIRNS PORT AUTHORITY EMPLOYEES
Bates was allowed to frontup on the MacKenzie talk-a-thon and directly make the case for his vote in support of continuing the planned Entertainment Precinct. Even Cueball knows he and Janelle can't just hang up on an elected councillor. Insiders report that Bates was invited to speak only after Cueball "checked" with Terry James who only allowed Bates on the radio if he had the "right of reply". John MacKenzie still proves to be a dickless wonder, with anyone in town making programming decisions.
But other Unity Team councillors have been raising serious questions about the intelligence of rejecting the $97million of state and federal money. One new councillor was heard noting that, from their research of council records, $97million in outside funding is 12 times the funding received by Cairns Council during the entire Tom Pyne & Kevin Byrne administrations!
And another new councillor, during a review of council operations, was obviously stunned at the $188million paid by council for the Cleaner Seas project during the Schier council, without a dime in outside funding available. They asked innocently why this much larger expenditure by council for water didn't get all the public attacks despite its much larger construction and on-going cost to the ratepayers, compared to the EP. For some of the new councillors, trying now to grapple with a tight budget and Bob Manning's silly promises to build an Entertainment Precinct WITHOUT other government assistance commitments, the idiocy of Unity Team's blind commitment to this nonsense is becoming clear.
As one councillor noted, $100million of council money for a new Civic Theater over four years means $2million per year, per division, less for roads, drainage, and other services or a 12% per year increase in rates. Suddenly, the Schier council numbers for the Entertainment Precinct are looking pretty good.
At his swearing-in ceremony, Bob Manning released his Unity Team councillors from blindly voting as Kevin "Hiding from Pakis" Byrne has ordered, insisting they work together as a council. With the justification collapsing for a community the size of Cairns snubbing $100M in "free money" while expecting ratepayers to pony up $188M for a mandated water program, even a new councillor can see how much damage to their division will be done to failing to build a new Schier-less theatre purely for spite.
