"SCREWDRIVER" MANNING FINALLY APPEARS ON THE RADIO, AFTER WEEKS HAS NO PLANS NO IDEAS AND NO CASH

I came across a new "disUnity Team" councillor today and quizzed them about what's going on inside council.  I guess they think all reporters have cameras and a mic, instead of an iPhone and a record app tucked in their pocket.  I asked Cr. Blabby when they (and the public) are going to actually see something like alternative plans from Bob Manning's Mayoral office.  (Which he's had repainted in a georgous baby blue).

This councillor confirmed that Manning is wandering around like a "stunned mullet", with his days filled with LNP and developer mates lined up outside his office like an upscale Centerlink office.  These mates have included unemployed LNP rabble looking to sign on as assistant bootlickers at an appropriate rate of pay and super, including Robyn and Dennis Quick, along with Paul "MY KID DID IT" Freebody.
ENTSCH AS PARTY WHIP IS SUPPOSED
TO BE COUNTING VOTES.  HIS
COLLEAGUES REFER TO HIM AS
"WARREN TURNOUR",
APPALLED AT THE IDIOCY OF
VOTERS IN FAR NORTH

QUEENSLAND
And then there's the LNP's Warren "Don't Lock that Door, Mate" Entsch, demanding funding for his unfunded "ideas" - rectangular stadium, giant sails over the new Tennis facility, etc.  Warren's got a $50M ratepayer bag, too.  He hasn't mentioned the tunnel from the CBD to First Beach land yet. .but maybe he's counting on Tunnel Newman to tuck into that idiotic idea.

Entsch was said to be gobsmacked at how quickly Gavin "Don't Rape Me" King bent over to CanDo on the stripping of $38M in CBD rehab funds - hence Entsch's call to the Cairns Post and featured Saturday story.  Two LNP MP'S for Cairns and they can't seem to even do one of these jobs right.

And everyone is being duped - as the price for Queensland Government bonds plummets and the international demand skyrockets, the so-called "huge deficit" is seen by the markets as normal spending for a high-growth state.  There is plenty of money, dickheads.  Stop drinking the kool-aid.

This new chatty councillor said many are scared at the voter backlash they'll receive if, as they're learning from staff as well as outside consultants, the cost of new 1100 seat theaters is typical at $100M.  Perth built a 575 seat theater for almost $100M just a year ago.  Some councillors realise they've been put in a huge ratbag, a typical "Catch-22", on the Entertainment Precinct.  Councillors doing their own research are coming to the conclusion that they've been boxed into a corner - throwing away $100M of government money for the Entertainment Precinct, with a realisation that a new plan will come it at $100M or more WITHOUT any LNP money.  And then Bob Manning's frightful statement on the Cueball show Friday, that council "will probably need to finance it from our balance sheet".

For the Hillbillies out there reading, this means:
THE RATEPAYERS WILL PAY THE WHOLE $100M COST!

YOU'VE EXCHANGED A PROJECT WITH $57M IN RATEPAYER FINANCE STARTING TWO YEARS FROM NOW  WITH A $100M PROJECT PAYABLE STARTING NOW.  ON A SITE COUNCIL DOESN'T OWN.

Manning and disUnity were elected on the typical, Tony Abbott, LNP "Just Say No" policy.  Team members were told when they agreed to be part of the Team that Manning had plans "well in hand" to resolve these issues.  They're now finding out that all he's got "in hand" is his flaccid pecker, and they're growing afraid of the looming day when voters get wise.

We're wise now, Cr. Blabby  Your secret is safe with us.

Manning has said on numerous occasions " he won't act until all the facts are in". All the facts are starting to point to the approved Entertainment Precinct as the cheapest and best solution for the community. Contracts with the government are signed and the LNP is bound by them. Manning should lay out the facts honestly to the community about how much ANY alternative will cost, and the majority will agree.

If comments in the Compost's letters page on Saturday are any criterion, the hoi polloi is beginning to realise the enormity of their uninformed choices at local and state level.

It's not too late for council to make an economically informed and intelligent decision about the CEP, and save ratepayers a shitload of dosh down the track. it just needs someone with intestinal fortitude to put forward the appropriate motion and for a couple more disUnity councillors to eat a few slices of humble pie. Master Bates might well be the marshaler.

Thanks for the link Hillbilly! Could readers also note that at the current 3 yr bond rate for Qld debt that Kitchenslut is happy to accept anything that any investor wants to offer him albeit at a cxredit rating of ZZZ-

Standard & Poors defines ZZZ- as "highly likely to piss the lot up against the wall before the long weekend is over". Buyer beware!

As Swan noted, "It's a circus!" Manning is now rabbiting about a "public/private partnership" to build the performing arts theatre (as if we didnt know that was always one of the plans) and whinging that he needs all the State funding given for the Entertainment Precinct "for other things...". Yeah, like what, Grandad? You campaigned to get elected on the issue that Cairns didn't need the Entertainment Precinct, and that you would halt the project if elected, you old fool, so why are you whinging because Newman has grabbed the money? Fool.

ruby red dress said...

Manning is waiting for "orders" as is his Unity Team. A group of conniving jackals have had their eyes on the $100 plus million for some years, plus of course the "critically important to ports expansion" land on the waterfront.
Newman may have thwarted their plans by grabbing the money and now refusing to give it back. It will be interesting to see what transpires now. Newman has no need of retaining the seats of Cairns, Barron River or Cook. FNQ is of no political value to him so I guess we are now left with whatever few crumbs he decides to throw our way or not. Compare that to the efforts of our previous Mayor, Val Schier, who helped envisage the concept of an Entertainment Precinct, had architects draw up the plans, worked out a Business Plan, then took the lot to Brisbane and Canberra and worked hard at convincing both State and Federal Ministers to part with funding. We really are at Newman's mercy. THANKS FOR NOTHING, LNP.

See where Manning mentioned today something about a public-private parternship for the theatre. Christ, the mans a tool. Doesnt he understand those types of arrangements end up almost always costing the taxpayers or ratepayers much more than the original estimates? Wasnt the Clean Seas Project a public/private arrangement which ended up blowing out the costs spectacularly and the reason why Val upped the rates by 10% in her first year as Mayor? Yeah, go for it Manning ya dickhead.

We've gone from a "shovel ready" project like the Entertainment Precinct which comprised one of the largest sums of money EVER given to our Cairns Regional Council to a Mayor running round in circles like a chook with its head off and having the Federal Member having to step in to try and recoup some of the money. What a bloody circus.

Anonymous said...

If the CRC has to cough up the entire cost of a new performing arts theatre, then you can bet your bottom dollar Manning will do the community consultation bit, have the plans drawn up etc etc and then toss it to the incoming Council when he RESIGNS in four years time.

"They're growing afraid of the looming day when voters get wise"?? Really, Hillbilly? Have a good look at Manning and Members of the Unity Team, Hillbilly. At least four members I would predict are only on Council for one term before they retire comfortably on the big monies they are earning on Council. Manning himself will only serve one term. Hillbilly, they don't have to give a stuff about any "looming day". They won't be accountable to the voters. Like Warren Entsch, they can sit there, do nothing, or make a huge mess, then resign at the next election and take off. "So long SUCKERS!"

Anonymous said...

Entsch may have had to weigh into the CBD funds issue because not only is King ineffectual and a small fish in an ocean of sharks as we have all previously discussed, but remember King has had a falling out with Newman?? Remember "Hillbilly Watch" wrote where Newman was overheard loudly chastising King in his office??
Newman is easily the most powerful Premier Australia has ever seen, and it wouldn't surprise me to see power go to his head. He may be deliberately vindictive towards King, as Joh Bjelke Petersen was towards his NP Members who either disagreed with him or did something he disliked. I think this may be the case, which would explain why Entsch has had to come into the picture. Time will tell if Newman is a clone of Bjelke-Petersen, however no-one could deny that the huge amount of power the man has will undoubtedly have some effect upon his judgement. Let there be no doubt that the unprecedented majority of the LNP in the Queensland Parliament will not result in good governance of this State. We are beginning to see that, and Cairns may well be the first and biggest casualty.

JOHN MACKENZIE'S HILLBILLY WATCH said...

While generally, Elly-May, I agree that much of this council won't be around after this one term, that doesn't mean that people want to be seen as jackasses, either. People have egos, and want to be seen doing the "right thing".

And as for the last anonymous, you're spot-on. Can you imagine Campbell Newman embracing the idea of a loudmouth JOURNALIST as a member of the inner circle? Newman's worried that Gavin King will be a disloyal leaker and self-promoter. No chance for Gavin.

Liz said...

Well said Anonymous above. We don't know how power will affect Newman, but we can be certain it will have some influence over his actions. As someone said in here before Newman is in an "inviolable" position, guaranteed to be Premier until his retirement, barring only an overthrow by his own party. For newbies like King, starting off on the wrong foot with such a powerful person may have long lasting consequences. This could explain why Entsch has had to come into the fray over the CBD funding.
Newman does not need the seat of Cairns. He doesn't need King, nor Manning. If he is a vindictive type, he could make King an "example" for others to toe the line. Personally, my interest has been whetted. I think we are in for some interesting times!

Mz Elly-May Clambutt said...

Thanks for your comment Hillbilly. I stand corrected and am pleased to know that some of the Unity Councillors have a sense of ethics and want to be seen as "doing the right thing". However my understanding of politics is that "being seen to be doing the right thing" isn't quite the same as actually "doing the right thing".
You are right I suspect about King too. He has demonstrated he is ruthlessly self-serving and self-promoting and has a network of journalist cronys around the State to help him climb the greasy pole. Newman would be keeping him at arms length and may even deliberately hijack his re-election chances.

Argus Tuft said...

There is a real chance here for a councillor to step up and show the kind of leadership that will give them the next mayoralty or maybe even a state or federal seat in parliament. One of them needs to convince just 2 of the fence-sitters that the CEP needs to proceed. Manning has obviously made false assurances to his team members and if just 1 can be convinced to act sensibly for the city and the last reluctant independent (Councillor Brain) convinced as well, the project and all its contracts can commence immediately. True we'd have a lame duck Mayor left in office with no effective credibility but hey how is that any different to what we have now? C'mon Cairns is there a leader out there?

Mz Elly-May Clambutt said...

That's all well and good Argus Tuft, but remember Manning and Unity argued over and over that the land the Precinct is to be built on is "critical for future Ports expansion"? Recall how they argued that the Entertainment Precinct would be a phenomenal rates burden on the ratepayers for decades to come? They would be viewed as having egg all over them if they attempted to rescind the vote on the Entertainment Precinct.
Besides there is no guarantee Newman would relinquish the monies.
As for "leadership", don't you think most Councillors would be cowed by the actions of both Mackenzie and The Cairns Post if they did a backflip? We have been dudded out of the funding and left in the quandary we are in, largely because of the local media playing politics.

With Brett Moller at Ports North no chance of CEP proceeding on Port Land. The project manager should be looking for alternatives i think it would be stunning in Port Douglas

Good point Mz Elly-May. The local media machine played a leading role in our losing the offer of a brand new hospital back in 1995, with Mackenzie roaring away, arousing all the simple minded and easily influenced, into a state of hysteria, and The Cairns Post itself had, on its front cover, a picture of the Base Hospital, with chains all over it, with the banner headlines "HANDS OFF OUR HOSPITAL". Keith deLacey, then Treasurer and Member for Cairns, backed off, and gave the new hosital to Townsville. Thus began, with the help of the local media machine, the worst acts of political bastardry ever perpetuated on the people of this region. Within five short years of losing the hospital, Mackenzie started his campaign "blaming" the State Government for Cairns having an over-stretched and ailing hospital. The Cairns Post came again into the fray, and linked up with Mackenzie, clamouring for a new hospital, not once mentioning they had rejected the offer of a billion dollar hospital some years before. In 2008, Minister Robertson, when he was Health Minister clearly stated the Cairns airport would be sold, in order to upgrade the existing hospital and buy land for a new one. He was echoed by Anna Bligh and Desley Boyle and you can find their media releases online. HOWEVER, within a few months, Mackenzie had changed it to.."Robertson said the sale of the airport was to build a new hospital". Robertson, Bligh and Boyle never said that at all. However, soon after The Cairns Post with King at the helm began the same deceit, "the sale of the airport was to build a new hospital." The act of political bastardry was complete when Mackenzie and King through The Cairns Post then charged the Bligh Government with "telling lies" about the new hospital. The political deceit and sheer bastardry was complete. King used it relentlessly in his campaign to get elected, alleging the Bligh Government "lied".
I agree with Mz Elly-May therefore that the less than honest and ethical local media machine are fully complicit in the quandary we now find ourselves in, and that Councillors are very wary of how they would be treated. Our media are a "dead hand" over the city which finds itself going round and round in circles.

Very Concerned said...

I remember well the hysteria of the new hospital saga back in 95. The campaign against was based by the hillbilly's on the fear of the land being sold off to the Japanese to help pay for the new hospital.
McKenzie then had a much bigger audience and effectively swayed public opinion against the move which would have seen a new hospital on the showgrounds land as is now and a new showground and upgraded race track at and next to Cannon park.Would have been perfect for Cairns.
The short sighted arguements against any progress these days is a real concern and it bewilders me as to why people have become so negative about spending money on improving Cairns.
The McKenzie listeners are fewer but more negative, miserable and against everything more so than ever before. Regrettably they continue to resonate misery throughout the community.
We must progress and be different otherwise we will wilther on the vine.

ruby red dress said...

Very Concerned, it's called "political bastardry" and Cairns has experienced three such examples since 1995 wherein we have been dudded out of much needed infrastructure. Political gain has been the motive, getting arses onto seats whatever the cost. And the cost to the people of Cairns has been a very, very high price. Consider, if you will, people who have to be flown by helicopter to Townsville Hospital for much needed life and death treatment, because Mackenzie and co. played their political bastardry. Some of those patients don't make it alive to Townsville.
Here we are again, in a quandary with a rapidly ageing and deteriorating Civic Theatre and no funds to build another one, as a direct result of the second act of political bastardry. The LNP have shamelessly used Mackenzie as a Goebbels style propagandist, spruiking outright lies ("the airport was sold to build a new hospital"), misinformation, deceit, and personal villification.
The personal campaign waged against Val Schier was another example of political bastardry, unprecedented here in the Far North.

HBW..It is great to have this site as no where is can we express our total amazement as to how we are being literally raped by the friends of the LNP namely John CueBall Mackenzie and his hangers on. Cairns has been absolutely robbed of opportunities which would have been of benefit to us all. CueBall and those who choose to befriend him have managed to ensure we loose project after project e.g. a new Hospital, the CEP and many of things that would have improved life for our citizens. The money that was on offer for the CEP from both the Federal and State Governments was much more that our City has ever received before. We have lost it. You would have thought the "The Cairns Post" would have been there for us. The Compost is taking money from advertisers in the City and each of us who pay for their paper. But, where is the Compost when we need them. Why aren't they fighting to ensure the money that has been promised is spent in Cairns to provide jobs and economic stimulis to our fine City. The Compost has turned its cheek - its gutless and just as gutless as Cueball who enjoys knocking every worthwhile project that would benefit our City and our citizens. It is such a shame that no-one has the balls to stand up and fight. Where is Advance Cairns who once totally supported the CEP. Where is TTNQ whose members would benefit so much if the CEP was a reality. Finally, where are our elected representatives? so far not one of them have had the balls to stand up and fight for what we are loosing. That's right we are loosing nearly $150 million of investment in this City because you are all weak with no balls and unfortunately no hope for the future of our City. Where do we goto from here? Political bastardry is the term alright, ruby red-dress. Robertson, Bligh and Boyle all made press statements in 2008 (which are online) clearly announcing the sale of the Cairns Airport would go towards upgrading the existing hospital plus buying land at Edmonton for a new hospital. How quickly cueball changed this to "They said the sale of the airport was to build a new hospital." What awful, scurrilous deceit. Then, to pick up that lie and brazenly use it against Bligh. "You lied about the sale of the airport!"
The bastardry was complete when Bligh, Boyle were refused to appear on rugnuts show to refute the lie and King as Editor at The Cairns Post rejected their press statements. What hope did the simple people of Cairns have against this type of cunning?
So we are now embroiled in another act of political bastardry perpetuated on the people of Cairns. It ain't over yet. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Ruby red dress, thanks for the info on cairns history.
can HBW or anyone else throw some light on the role in cairns post that kings election manager(or whatever his title was)plays. is he a reporter, does he have any say in what gets posted in the letters to the editor or on their website.I presume he was the reason the post ran the maiden speech rubbish recently, but one of my posts suggesting that did not make it online and a recent post on the cep has not appeared. I think it was too close to the truth!

Yes, what a contrast. Unlike her predecessor, the former Mayor accepted defeat gracefully and didn't engage in bitter sniping from the sidelines and trying to undermine the new council.

Let's hope Richie Bates keeps speaking up independently.

Anonymous said...

Just heard the angry and bitter former member for Barron River and former Minister for Corruption say on 4 CA that "Trout and King" were working like "niggers".

I am not the politically correct type and this was an acceptable expression once, but certainly it should not be allowed to say things like this publicly this day and age..

He was having a go at Entsch, because he had a go at King and Trout about the CBD money and was allowed to continue rant without interruption..

Manning will be undermined in other ways and it will most likely be from his own so called unity party. What a joke they all are.

k. nevill, many of my letters to The Cairns Post were rejected during the years King was Editor, particularly letters describing the political deceit over the Base Hospital.

Tony Hillier said...

If it's any consolation, k.nevill several of my letters to the Compost relating to the CEP failed to get a run during the election campaign. I'd be interested to know how many other missives suffered a similar fate. I bet all epistles carrying the moniker W.Schmidlin or Anne-Marie Whelan — no matter how trivial or nonsensical — were waved through.

I notice The Cairns Post is now carrying more "soft" stories than before. Also of course there is no "hard hitting" columnist. I have had one of my recent letters regarding the Entertainment Precinct rejected, so it is obvious to me that King is being protected.

k.nevill said...

once again ruby i agree with you. If king is being protected i presume it is his former election managers hand at work. I ask again can anyone throw some light on his role at cairns post?

have tried 3 times to make comment on mannings options for a theatre but cairns post will not allow it to get onto their site. even tried to shame them by starting my last attempt with a comment that i had checked their guidelines etc and my post was complying so i could only presume they were censoring any comments that were too close to humiliating manning. Also noted there were only 4 comments on an item that i thought would have got a lot more interest so more censoring going on.
Pissed off and frustrated so i will comment here as best as i can remember what my comments were.
Manning has not got a clue as to how to replace the aging theatre we have in Cairns. His suggestion to lease back a privately owned complex will cost ratepayers dearly. There is enough evidence already that privatisation has cost taxpayers badly all over australia, we dont need another example. Build it ourself he says. The councillors are finding out that an 1100 seat theatre comes for a 100 million and they dont have any land to build it on. Add in the cost for stopping the CEP, 6 million from the feds and possibly ports north sueing for 30 odd million. They leased the land for 99 years at $10 a year. All up could be as much as 150 million.
Perth have just opened a 575 seat theatre that cost 100 million and took 7 years from concept to completion.
All this makes 58 million for a shovel ready CEP look like a damn good idea. As for the excuse it is being built on crucial port land , ports north have said repeatedly it is not required for future expansion.
Get on with it cairns council and do your ratepayers a favour.
Thats as best as i can remember! Dont think i abused anybody, broke any laws or said anything that could offend ....except someone who does not want the general public to be made aware of what is really going on.
