NEW HBW FEATURE! PERIODIC TOURISM "NAME AND SHAME" PHOTO ESSAY

It's time the community start calling out the embarrassments, the disgusting, the absurd, the dangerous, and the toxic in our tourist-centric community.

We have received these photos over the last few months, and decided it was time to start using them.  We encourage everyone to send your submissions in to us for future publication.

CAIRNS CENTRAL
The roof in the centre court of Cairns Central leaks.  It has leaked for years.  It has leaked thru at least two changes of owners.  The leak continues to get worse.  As you can see.  The leak shown is at the bottom of the escalator.  As you can see.  Apparently customer safety is much less important than the massive profits this centre generates for the landlord.

Many of the hotel buildings in the CBD and surrounding area are disgusting.  While there are several candidates for "name and shame", one reader has suggested this one is the worst.  The fact that it's on our main street thru town isn't any help.  Recent TripAdvisor reviews contain reports of filth and bedbugs.  Bob "Screwdriver" Manning has been told about this hotel, but says council can't do anything.  The all-purpose pollie excuse.  What kind of city, much less a so-called world class tourist city, has no power to close hotels as health hazards???
SUNSHINE TOWER HOTEL.  CAPTIONED ONLY SO GOOGLE WILL FIND THIS PHOTO
AND DISPLAY TO POTENTIAL TRAVELLERS.  LIKELY SIMILAR INSIDE.  YUCK.

We've gotten several complaints about the continuing problems at the Cairns Airport.  We've done stories about this soulless travel factory.  Huge numbers of drivers still can't find the hidden entrance to the domestic terminal (which has the personality and class of a Dunder Mifflin paper factory).  Parking is grossly overpriced, and there is still no covered walkway from baggage claim to the pick-up area.

But one of the more stupid airport follies was the idiots that striped the parking lots, leaving unusable-sized spaces at the end of every row.  Leave it to lazy Cairns hillbillies to find a way to make these spots usable.  Look closely and you'll see cars parked on the berms in every row!

Cairns Central has leaked since it's opening in August 1998. I remember opening the centre and a few months later the buckets came out. They have spent thousands trying to plug the roof up but whoever had the bright idea to place glass panels on the ceiling all the way along the building in a tropical centre is responsible for the leaks. They are not fixable. A new roof is the only way to fix it up and I can't see that happening soon.

Leigh, with all due respect your defence of this leaking roof is bullshit. Glass roof panels are a feature of buildings in Hong Kong and Singapore. I've been there when it's raining, and don't see buckets lined up everywhere. Let's face it, workmanship on many buildings in Cairns is dodgy. I'm with Hillbilly Watch on this one - this is not a good image for tourists to be taking home with them.

Damn right workmanship on many buildings is dodgy. Which was the building which had an indoor "waterfall" even before completion? There was a building frenzy in Cairns under the Byrne Council in the 1990s and many dodgy developments went up.

Workmanship on Cairns buildings is dodgy, because sub-contractors get screwed over and are squeezed mercilessly for every dollar by the builders/ developers who pay themselves huge management fees, before going broke, leaving suppliers and workers unpaid, and setting up shop elsewhere.

I have rectified all sort of work carried out by major well-known building companies in this town (all bankrupt now), work that should have never passed any decent building inspection. If you don't pay people properly, you must expect that they will take short-cuts and that's what's happening time and time again.

Hong Kong and Singapore? They're all over Australia. Just about every major shopping centre in the major cities has glass panelled rooves and none of them leak. There just isn't the expertise here to fix something like that.

It would cost too much to fly in a team of experts, so better to just let it leak.

Dozens of other mould-covered buildings around town. I saw one imbecile, instead of cleaning it, painting over the mould. They are hideous.

Check outside Blue Sky brewery to see if the concrete planter boxes are still being used by patrons as management-sanctioned ashtrays, vomit boxes, and toilets.

I haven't been there since early 2008, but it used to be a reeking mess.

Blue Sky is or was owned or run by Capta, which has at the helm one of our so-called tourism "heroes" charles woodward.

This mob, like all tourism operations, is a gold medallist at blood-sucking the life out of governments, but is too lazy to do a hand's turn of work itself to save the city from the putrid mess it creates.

The Colonial Club, once THE place to be has deteriorated and become grotty and scungy too. Christ or mighty we all clean the grunge off our own homes, why can't these resort owners use a bit of elbow grease as well? Dont they give a shit how their places look? Hey Captain Mann(er)ing, your the big bloke in charge, why don't you give all these resort owners a bit of a blast about keeping their places clean and decent looking?
