ANTHONY MIROTSOS AND CHAMBER ATTACK MANNING AND COUNCIL FOR MONTHS OF INACTION - SITUATION ACTUALLY MUCH WORSE AS CHAOS AND LACK OF LEADERSHIP GRIP ORGANISATION

Chamber President Anthony Mirotsos, was pushed by Chamber of Commerce leadership this week into a mealy-mouthed statement criticising Mayor Bob "Screwdriver" Manning and his council of unknowns.  Manning stood up before the Chamber at lunch today and attempted to make a joke of the situation.  The only attendees to laugh were the usual spineless yes-men.  Most averted their eyes from this dysfunctional mayor.  It was a sad and uncomfortable display before several LNP state ministers, who clearly are viewing Cairns and their elected officials on every level with disdain.

But the problems at Cairns Council are deeper than a dozen shovel-ready projects that Manning has shit-canned for no good reason.  Deeper than his promises to "get this city moving" when the reality is Manning can barely decide to wear a blue or red tie in the morning.

We've been getting a steady stream of news from inside the council, with chaos, lack of leadership, poor morale, and management exodus crippling even day-to-day operations.

Manning has refused to even look for an experienced city manager to replace Lyn Russell, instead continuing council operations under Development Department manager Peter Tabulo.  Tabulo has long been viewed by staff and the public as a spineless tool - he was largely responsible for many of the hideous projects that in part cost former Mayor Byrne is job.  Tabulo is now being counted on to do - nothing.

And the staff that had runs on the board, and are integral into assisting the new Mayor into pulling the city out of economic doldrums?  The Manager for Economic Development and Innovation is out the door, along with the Tropical Innovation Awards, a program that could have supported the long unfulfilled Entsch tropical sporting centre.  Losing all these programs is making any council driven recovery all but impossible.

And as neighbourhood complaints start to come in, DO NOTHING is just what this council is now doing.  And these complaints come from all over the region.  Cars for sale on the roadside now are endemic.  Graffiti is left instead of being removed.  Illegal signs advertising car sales, events, fetes, businesses, and nightclubs are springing up on all our roads as word gets out - council's not enforcing any local laws, letting business run riot.  Council has handed over a slice of waterfront land to contractors building the new hospital.  Last time the Byrne council "temporarily" handed over waterfront land to the hospital, the public never got it back.

Roadsides unmowed.  Gardens unplanted for spring.  Some road crews broken up. Graffiti, even on commercial buildings with owners that clearly don't give a shit about their city, no longer get a visit from council officers.

Even two cars with homeless drunks, parked on a city street only a few blocks from Council Chambers have been allowed to remain despite repeated resident complaints to their councillor.  In full view of tour buses every day.

And an equal flood of messages to the blog have been received from ordinary residents, who are finding their new councillors impossible to contact.  So many complaints to councillors are going without even an acknowledgement, it has led many to surmise that Manning has ordered his Unity Team not to engage in any community support.  And the complaints are greatest about two-faced Richie Bates.

Welcome to Cairns- the land of the Do Nothing Council led by the doddering narcoleptic Mayor.

I have always found Richie Bates to be very responsive. No complaints here!! However, what the hell can he do in the CBD? King has said first off that Labor never put the $38 million aside, then we find out that it still is here, via secret emails between King and Manning, then we find out that only $5 million is being allocated for the CBD..... How the hell would anyone like to be caught up in this sort of blundering situation?

I think we should give the Cairns Chamber of Commerce some slack. They were caught up as the ham in the sandwich between the ugly, obsessive, totally unprecedented hate campaign against Val Schier orchestrated by Byrne, Mackenzie and some of the boys club. Cairns has never experienced anything like it. I cannot stress this fact enough. The Chamber did make a strong stand in supporting the Entertainment Precinct, despite some half-witted and moronic members actually regurgitating back, like brainless parrots, Mackenzie's opinion of "white elephant" and "monument to an ego." (It was worth it to see the look in their eyes when someone told them about the numbers of people who went to see "Mary Poppins" in Brisbane.) The Chamber was caught in the middle between not just a political war but a hideous personal vendetta. Manning and his team were only elected on a tsunami of hate against Val Schier, nothing more. That was all the Unity Team was about, defeating Val Schier and getting rid of the Entertainment Precinct.

I agree HBW, Manning looked like he wanted to crawl under the Carpet at the Chamber meeting to-day. He certainly had plenty of egg on his face as well. Mind you I think both Gavein King and Trout were trying to find their way under the Carpet as well. The Queensland Treasurer was blunt and offered nothing more to Cairns when asked a well thought out Question on the Entertainment Precint. Nothing on offer and nothing in the future. We already knew of the piddling amount in the Budget for the Inner City Re-development and the only other that my come to the Cairns Regional will be if your school needs repairs as there is some money for that. Now tomorrow there will be no headlines in the Cairns Post in this regard. Juvinille Crime seems to be more important than more coming into Cairns to help generate jobs and build some infrustucture to create employment and build for the future. The Cairns Post is continuing to let us down and they should be socking it up to the Government as Gavein King did when he worked there. The Cairns Post have let us down but I don't think they care anymore since they now print our paper in Townsville. Charlie

The problem is Newman views Cairns and Barron River as disposable seats. HE DOESNT NEED THEM TO GOVERN. Moreover, King, Trout and Kempton are all too gutless and weak to roar for the North's fair share. This is a time when we need fair dimkum ridgy didge gladiators to go in and do battle for us with Newman. Instead of roaring, sword in hand gladiators, we got a trio of squeaky, shivering mice.
PS why the hell would Manning look "sad"?? He has everything he always wanted, to do the job. An LNP Premier, an LNP State Member, LNP appointees in all the Government and semi government positions, and an LNP Federal Member. Oh, and he has an LNP dominated Council. Cairns is now ruled entirely by the LNP. It is exactly what Manning has always wanted, and now he has it. Manning is in heaven, mate.

Manning has everything he ever wanted Bob R. You are so right there. He is the ONLY MAYOR in Cairns' history to have his own political party in complete and total control of everything. Manning has it dead easy, absolutely easy peasy and cushy. Noone in the mainstream media is going to criticise him. He has a subservient majority in the Council who will do what he asks, when he asks, how he asks, like he asks. Yet he can't do anything because he just doesn't have what it takes to lead a city. No bloody wonder Mirotsis is frustrated.

What do you expect from Colonel Mann(er)ing and Dad's Army? Nothing will happen in Cairns except a Mayor and several unknown ageing Councillors will have a nice easy bludge off the ratepayer and then all piss off before the next election laughing all the way to the Gold Coast for a luxurious retirement.
