Elected Cairns Chamber of Commerce President Anthony Mirotsos, who's been under fire with attacks organised by John MacKenzie and his radio program, today fired back at the critics, doubling down on the Chamber's disappointment with the new Bob Manning "led" Cairns Regional Council.
One of the most scathing remarks on Mirotsos came from Kevin "Hiding from the Pakis" Byrne. It was filled with bile and caustic personal attacks on Mirotsos, and alleged that Mirotsos had acted without consulting his board. Byrne also offered up excuses, claiming that Manning needed "time to change the direction" after the change of administration, and that the sniping was "bad for the city". THIS FROM THE GUY WHO LED THE SNIPING AGAINST VAL SCHIER FROM DAY ONE AFTER THE 2008 ELECTION, AND NEVER LET UP! And these themes were then picked up by Martin Tenni, Karin "Pearl Necklace" Pollard, and Raj the Printer. All wrong.
In a letter to Chamber membership today Mirotsos says that his role as President is "to translate the thoughts and feelings of the Cairns Chamber membership to external audiences". He points out the "overwhelming feeling of the membership. . .is one of frustration (with the CRC). They promised to hit the ground running. . . .while the Newman administration set clear 100 day targets. . . then hit the vast majority of them, our CRC leadership appears to our members to have listed and achieved very little in the same space of time".
Cairns residents were sold this disUnity Team, with almost $200K in spending that was more than all of the other candidates combined. The message? Bob Manning is an experienced leader! This has not been borne out in this council's virtually non-existant performance and appalling lack of leadership and vision.
Mirotsos also noted that at the Chamber lunch this week, Manning had the opportunity to fight back, to articulate his and council's work plan. But instead Manning made a lame joke, sat with his arms folded, and looked a lonely, despondent and beaten man. Just a few months into the job!
Mirotsos also shares with the community in this letter the lack of engagement and vision they had when they conducted their first meeting between the Chamber Management Committee and Manning shortly after the election. Cairns needs a firebrand, a go-getter. We instead look to have gotten a doddering old grandpa.
At Council committee meetings yesterday, this frustration began to show among the new councillors. In one heated exchange with the chair, Cr. Steve Brain, annoyed at the Rubik's cube-like council processes, was reported to have said "let's just fuck it off then". And while he later apologised, this councillor who brings a high level of military bullshit-intolerance along with decisive, decision-making skill, can see the rudderless gang that's now driving us into the rocks. He should have been given a leadership role, but instead is sucking eggs.
So far, the only leader in this town is Anthony Mirotsos. No wonder the other ratbags are out to get him.
The letter is signed "Anthony Mirotsos, President, Cairns Chamber of Commerce".
"And on behalf of the entire Cairns Chamber Management Committee".
To remove any doubt that this is a clear, majority position of the city's business leaders. Stuff that up your jumper, KB!
