EVEN POST-MAYORALITY, VAL SCHIER BEAT-UPS CONTINUE WITH ANOTHER PACK OF LIES

On Thursday in addition to the bootcamp manipulation as reported below, Cueball apparently felt compelled to enhance a grossly incorrect story from the Cairns Post about the Chinese Sister City with Cairns, Zhanjiang.  And in this beatup, he enlisted the man who spent four years proudly leading the Val-beaters, Kevin "Hiding from the Pakis" Byrne.  Calling from his rathole in PNG.

EVEN THE CAIRNS POST RECOGNISED SOMETHING
WAS SCREWY WITH KEVIN BYRNE
Sister City agreements are designed to foster both economic and cultural exchanges.  The Byrne council focused on the business side, and had little interest in the cultural exchanges.  Zhanjiang would look to have some mutual commonalities with Cairns, as both are tropical seaport cities.  Did Zhanjiang find any seaport investment opportunities under Byrne in Cairns?  Obviously not.  Perhaps they were confused as to why the so-called Cairns business leaders were looking to develop a port area IN our CBD, when Zhanjiang had over 10 years ago moved all their active port operations OUTSIDE their CBD and reclaimed this area as a public amenity.  This amenity includes the Cairns-designed garden project as part of this reclaimation.  Perhaps they were confused as to why a so-called tourist city like Cairns would allow its hotels to deteriorate into deplorable shitholes, or be converted to apartments of little value to international travelers.  Apparently the Zhanjiang leadership view of Cairns was of rigid, command economy has-beens, and not as leaders of a modern, progressive city.  So busy were the Cairns business community trying to "share" their western-style leadership and business skills they learned nothing of value from these progressive city thinkers in Zhanjiang.  Funny that.

Given the radio opportunity, Byrne spruiked the relationship with Zhanjiang and spoke about the multiple trips to China made by him and Advance Cairns during his tenure as mayor.   Zhanjiang has a big prawn farming export business.  But with Warren "Run for the Door" Entsch calling imported seafood "poison", that's off the table.  But we did get to help with their gardening.

PREMIER PETER BEATTIE, TRANSLATING
NORTH QUEENSLAND "HILLBILLY" DIALECT
INTO ENGLISH FOR THE VISITING CHINESE
Seven trips in four years that were so worthless Byrne didn't even take the time to submit reports to council justifying the huge ratepayer expenditure, so we know little about these trips.  One of these junkets was so (not) important to the Chinese that only one low-level Chinese city employee met the delegation!    Trips that produced - well - nothing besides a joint "Sino-Australian Friendship Garden".  And a job at a Chinese newspaper for Advance Cairns chair David Maguire, who's since set up his own company.  Funny that.

And these trips also generated financial and credit card irregularities on the books at Advance Cairns so serious that the audit for that year was noted as "qualified".  No wonder there are no written reports.

Byrne as usual yesterday claimed the Schier council did nothing, and the relationship with the Chinese is "at risk".  A review of council records paints a quite different picture.

When the Schier council took office, the relationship with Zhanjiang was already damaged.  Reports of drunken behaviour during at least one of the previous junkets was thought to be at least some of the cause.  The council in 2008 refocused the relationship on the cultural exchanges, and the Chinese co-attended events by Zhanjiang officials in every year of the previous council.  And as the world economic situation stablisied in 2010, a Shier-led delegation attended the trade fair for Small & Medium Enterprises in 2010.

Even more importantly, these links with China opened the door to meetings between council and Cairns Airport officials with both China Eastern and China Southern airlines.  This led directly to the first China Eastern charter tours to Cairns in 2011, more in 2012, and obviously the catalyst to the newly announced China Eastern scheduled service to Cairns beginning next month.  The cash-splash by the LNP was an unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars - their plans to service Cairns were already finalised.

Gavin "Don't Rape Me" King has attempted to claim credit for these services, when in fact his only contribution was calling the Chinese names.  THEY'VE COME IN SPITE OF KING!

ZHANJIANG BOTANICAL GARDEN - THIS IS WHAT
THE CHINESE DID ALONE.
WHY DID THEY NEED CAIRNS' HELP?
It's unclear why Kim Morris, who many in the community regard as a competent but bland garden designer, has chosen now to launch this diatribe.  Morris has both his own company (which wasn't the only Cairns company associated with the Zhanjiang project, as he has erroneously suggested) as well as an officer of CLIC, the Cairns Landscaping Industry Cluster.  And a look at either of these websites would seem to indicate that neither organisation is even interested in keeping their own websites in working order and up-to-date.  The Morris company website is full of broken links and broken dreams, and the CLIC website has been dormant since 2009.  The Chinese business community loathes incompetence. Perhaps a little introspection about the Sister City relationship by the business community is in order - as well as a fucking mirror.  We have seen the enemy, and he is us.

Anyone that has an ounce of understanding about the Chinese know that they don't take these kinds of "guanxi" (go look it up) relationships lightly.  And once formed, the Chinese take the long view, and expect ups and downs.  Perhaps they feel they've been sold a pig-in-a-poke by the Australians.  Here they thought they were teaming up with a world-class, forward thinking, hard-charging leaders and instead found a backward-thinking, beer-swilling, group of hillbilly louts who turn their backs on $100M in government funding for a world-lcass theater to instead fight to keep their dying port in the centre of town. The Chinese are thinking - who are these ignorant, backward people?

In this Sister City relationship, Cairns is the ugly, developmentally-challenged sister that the Chinese humour, but try to keep locked up in a closet.  It's clear the relationship has had issues - but the misogynist beat-up by Byrne and MacKenzie has again foundered on something called the truth.

Why is it that the only real reporting about this city is being done by a blogger? The Cairns Post is a dead operation now. Thank god for the Hillbilly Watcher!

We need to really get rid of the dead wood in this town. There are so many beautiful backward irrelevant towns in this world so we are not special. The only reason we have any life left in us is we have an International airport and a coral reef.

China is going forward and has no interest in hick towns. I doubt we ever get much tourism going, just the sheer population size they have will mean a few will come but not many.

They have everything we have and the coral we show is sub standard very often so why should they come?.

As for Anonymous 16.55, the popularity of the Newman Government is tanking faster than a donut down Gina Rinehart's cavernous mouth. Recent polls show 70% of Queenslanders now say if they had known what Newman was going to do, they would haver have voted for him. So Anonymous, with your hahaha's, you might like to face the facts that the Newman Government look like being a one term government, just like the Borbidge Government. Remember them?? Your good mate Gavin King, who keeps on telling wankers lies, likes to conveniently forget about Borbidge.

I was astonished reading the Weekend Post not to find one mention of any of the three local MPS - Gavin King, Michael Trout and David Kempton - in the three pages of coverage of Can Do's family extermination program.

Excuse me but I thought an MP's job was to advocate on our behalf and to represent us in Brisbane.

so why didn't the cairns post ask them what they are doing to save hundreds of cairns families from ruin, what they are doing to ensure that no jobs are lost in their electorates, how they have worked to protect our jobs, and so on.

The answer is that the Cairns Post is still part of the LNP campaign team and is doing all it can to protect its lords and masters.

And it is so blatant about it - just like dog droppings on 4CA.

Hahaha, anonymous 16;55, you are like those dickheads that constantly pollute the Cairns Post online comment section with their garbage.

They also seem to think that "THEY" have "WON" something. "WON" what exactly? Do you really think that Newman and co. give a shit about YOU or BullShit Scotty Scott, Crockpot, Spewville, Silverbeet, Pearl and all these other idiots who believe that "THEY" are now in charge.

Governments in Australia change all the time. Big deal! Both previous National Party governments came unstuck badly and it all ended up in tears, so I wouldn't crow too much if I were you. Let's wait and see if they can actually deliver something, other than sacking people.

As far as Cairns is concerned it is not looking too good so far. Once you grow up a bit, maybe you could try and add something to the debate other than childish glee at having "WON" something..You are the "LOSER" and you don't even know it. What a fool.

Anonymous 16.55 is symptomatic I think of the erosion of democracy in this country. To reduce democracy to "winners and losers" is simplistic and broaches upon a totalitarian approach to government with its creed of "winner take all." The use of emotive language such as hate speech primes the likes of Anonymous 16.55 into this childlike, black and white, "goodies and baddies" mindset and stymies critical thinking.

Anonymous No.4, The reason why the Cairns Post had no comments from the 3 local LNP members is that the publication has become the FNQ apologist for the LNP.

Take for example the Editorial last Saturday 'As The Cairns Post has said before, cuts are necessary to get the state's finances under control and the LNP was given a strong mandate to carry out such measures.'

Or Melanie Petrinec today 'We all know something had to give to lower the state's debt. The public had enough of the previous government and it's spending...'

No need to get the LNP members to supply quotes when The Cairns Post can save them the trouble.

Share this around folks. Sorry it's so long. Two parts due it's length.

Pukallus: Campbell Newman does not have a mandate to kill people!

Citizens Electoral Council Queensland Secretary Jan Pukallus today urged Queensland Premier Campbell Newman to drop his austerity health cuts, and heed Argentina’s warning against austerity—“the dead can’t pay”.

“Campbell Newman does not have a mandate to kill people,” Mrs. Pukallus said. “He should learn from Argentina’s example that people don’t have to die to solve an economic crisis.

“Queensland is in a financial crisis because successive state governments bowed to the diktats of private financial interests: to use the public rort known as PPPs [public-private partnerships] to subsidise private investors to build infrastructure in a way they could milk for profits; to outsource government services to expensive private scams; to concentrate the state’s industrial activity on mining exports instead of manufacturing; and to set up the state’s finances to be a big milking cow for private fund managers.

“Now private financial interests are dictating huge budget cuts in order to restore the oh-so-precious triple-A credit rating.

“Just remember,” Pukallus emphasised, “it was the very same international credit ratings agencies Newman is now trying to impress, which caused the GFC by fraudulently rating worthless sub-prime mortgages as triple-A. Why on earth should Australians be thrown into extreme hardship to meet the approval of the criminals running the world’s ratings agencies?”

Mrs. Pukallus highlighted the experience of Argentina, which suffered a debt implosion in 2001-02, but under President Nestor Kirchner who took office following that crisis, Argentina abruptly turned its back on the previous government’s extreme monetary austerity, and restructured its foreign debt such that it was written down and then only repaid on terms that didn’t force Argentina’s people into hardship. Argentina’s current President Christina Fernandez de Kirchner, Nestor’s widow and successor, told the Argentine Board of Trade on Aug. 2 that debt-burdened Europe should learn from her husband’s message to the UN in 2003 that “the dead can’t pay their debts”—austerity would never bring about a recovery in devastated Argentina, and that he would not place the bankers’ interests before those of his own citizens.

T. Asquith said...

Part 2
Argentina last month repaid the final instalment on the debts from 2001-2002—made possible only because the Kirchners had directed credit to agriculture, industry and infrastructure in the meantime. Finance minister HernĂ¡n Lorenzino stated in July 28 remarks to Tiempo Argentino that the payment represents the “final chapter of the 2001-2002 debacle”, from which Argentina was able to recover without killing its own citizens through brutal austerity. “It’s worth remembering,” he said, “that you can recover from a crisis like the one we had without making the most needy bear the cost and sacrifice.” The Finance Minister added that Argentina has no intention of returning to foreign financial markets, because “going back to financing current expenditures with debt is to return to the 1990s. This has not been, nor will it be, this government’s policy. Financing infrastructure is what we’ve done, and what we’ll continue to do.”

Pukallus continued, “Newman is holding out a shrivelled ‘carrot’ to Queenslanders losing their jobs and health services that restoring the triple-A credit rating will save over $100 million per year in interest payments. I want to make two points in response to that:

“First, recent revelations out of London exposed that the world’s benchmark interest rate, the LIBOR [London Inter-Bank Offered Rate], was completely rigged by private bankers to boost their profits. Under this system, Queenslanders can be put through hell to achieve a triple-A rating, but those same banksters can just up it at will. Queensland should not expose itself to this corrupt system.

“Second, there is a far better alternative. Acknowledged under the Commonwealth Constitution, state governments have the right to set up government-owned state banks. Just as the CEC is proposing for a national bank, a state bank while slightly more limited can be a powerful tool for the government to direct public credit into important infrastructure projects that are not for short-term profit, but for boosting the long-term prosperity of the state. Queensland has thousands of kilometres of roads that need repairing, countless bridges that must be upgraded, and serious shortages in rail, power and water infrastructure. Meeting these infrastructure needs with a state bank will not be a ‘cost’ to Queensland, but will generate a real boom that will profit all of Queensland.”

Mrs. Pukallus concluded, “When Queenslanders punished the ALP by voting for Newman, as if that would change something, they were fools, which they are now starting to discover. But they can’t blow their balloons and whistle about it—they must take up their responsibilities as citizens and mobilise to force the Newman government to put Queenslanders ahead of bankers. The CEC is leading the fight—isn’t it time you joined us?”

"Sledgehammer" McKenzie spent all morning giving his LNP cronies unlimited air time to sell a budget that delivers virtually nothing for Cairns or FNQ. No dissenting voices were heard, no impartial analysis, no opposition views, no mention of all the lost funding, the scrapping of the CEP and the few crumbs we received for City Place, which will probably be spent on more reports and 1 day bulldozer hire to flatten the existing Kevin Byrnes fiasco. All the brainwashed idiots on the Cairns Post on line comments faithfully repeated the mantra :"The State is broke, blame the ALP !".Even McKenzie's regular mini sledgehammers weren't allowed on today to endorse (or God forbid !) criticize the budget. He didn't ask Gav any hard questions about broken promises and he didn't quiz Troutie about his criminal family or about boot camps (are you listening Pearl ?). Sledgehammer indeed ! I think the mushroom is pretty awful, but I got kind of used to it like the Captain Cook statue. But what I really meant was the bad choice of trees ( no shade), the hot pavers, the hot steel seats, the total lack of ambiance and the overall bad design. It's a barren, soulless place. Still, it shouldn't cost that much really to do the place up. Why is it so hard ? Pay a consultant some bucks to have a look in other tropical cities and see how it is done. Singapore is full of attractive little squares, so are towns in Thailand, Malaysia and many other places. While they are at it, they could have a look at how you can design an attractive and welcoming airport in the tropics.. Koh Samui and Okinawa come to mind...Who designs all this ugliness ?

Anonymous said...

Could this be Newman's next stunt? From the Climate spectator- The Queensland Competition Authority (QCA), in a recently (this month) released issues paper, has suggested that solar PV owners only be paid the wholesale market value of electricity for ALL generation their systems produce.
Through the introduction of "gross metering" owners of PV systems would have to export ALL THEIR GENERATION TO THE GRID, receiving around 8 cents per kilowatt-hour. They could not use the generation from their systems to meet their own consumption needs thereby avoiding purchasing electricity from their electricity retailer, which is charged at a price of around 20 to 30 cents per kilowatt-hour.
