He is just not demonstrating decisive leadership is he? Unlike Val, he has everything going for him, a majority in the Council, no-one inside Council trying to undermine and plot against him, Mackenzie singing his praises and bolstering his status and power as "His Worship the Mayor", a supportive Cairns Post and the support of "the boys club". He is surrounded by LNP politicians who are supportive, and has an LNP State Government as well. He has everything going for him, yet his performance to date has been one of a wavering ditherer. He campaigned against the Entertainment Precinct on the basis that the land it was scheduled to be built on was absolutely critical to the needs of Cairns and future ports expansion. Yet once he was elected, he seems to have forgotten that. He is procrastinating and stalling on the need for a new performing arts theatre. He is dithering and in secretive talks with Gavin King about upgrading the CBD. Millions of dollars in State funding look like being lost to Cairns and he isn't standing up for Cairns.

Although has shown no vision at least he is not as destructive as Newman is. Newman hates half the population he represents, that much is clear.

I knew Manning when he was running the CPA. Never came across an employee who respected him. Even then, he showed dismal management ability for which he compensated by indulging in power plays with staff - nasty little exercises to show them who was boss. Frankly, he doesn't cut it as mayor, the man needs a charisma transplant.

the plain fact'v the matter is Bob is bad for Cairns... he& his mob have done zilch for the place... they are actually taking credit 4 stuff that Val initiated(flgts from China is just 1 example)... there is a total dearth of vision... his donning'v mayoral robes has seemingly overwhelmed him...everything he turns his hand to has disaster for Cairns written all over it...he is paralysed by indecision & his LNP mates who have put him out 2 dry... unfortunately for Cairns, not enuf people knew how good Val was 4 the place...mb that was the issue for her in not being able 2 get that message out... or was it just that the punters didn't want 2 listen... it's a sad indictment of our city, that we treated her so shabbily... cueball, King, the Stensch, ol' ma Cochrane & her toadying lapdog, the snake & all their cabal 'v done us over... in their desperate grasp 4 power... they couldn't tolerate the progressive Val being so good 4 our town... to them & all those they conned, she was an anomaly(Cairns'1st woman mayor!)... an aberration... they tried all the tricks in " ThePrince" to undermine & break her... they didn't figure on someone of her resolve... and now look at what we've got... barring Rob,Julia& Linda... it's a ship'v fools... it'll lurch from blunder 2 blunder... we've been set back 10 yrs by this lot!... but hope must win out over despair!... we as citizens must take the fight up 2 'em...
with the help of hillbilly... thanks 4 the opportunity 2 vent

Hey Al ...

Let's bring back Kev Byrne.
Now he "cut it" and had "charisma"
Every time he was mayor this city "got going".
Come back Kev ... all is forgiven.
Them pesky Clifton Beach Port Douglas types will be history soon.

Al said...

Yep Terry James, this city got going alright ... well for some, like Amanda for instance. As for Kevie having charisma; mate, you're surely pulling my leg. Look it up. It's the ability to inspire followers with enthusiasm. Haven't seem much of that emanating from City Hall lately, have you?

Hey Terry, has CRC figured into their budget the lose of some 40 million when Douglas de-amalgamates and doesn't contribute to CRC bottom line anymore. What happens when Douglas shire wants all their equiment, machinery etc back so that they can operate.

Yep, Terry, Byrne had "charisma" alright. Like being an obssessive sore loser and egotist who couldn't accept a woman beat him in an election for the Mayoralty. So, she had to pay, didn't she? Yep, she had to pay. Hey Terry James, we're not talking here about just a few swipes from the sidelines. We're talking about FOUR full years of persecution. FOUR full years which saw the people of Cairns polarised like never before. No NORMAL person carries revenge that far. Think about it. We're talking about excessive vindictiveness, spite, malice, ruthlessness, misogynism and insensitivity to the needs of the people of Cairns. "Charisma"? Terry James or the manifestation of a very sick ego and overt sociopathy. Now, Terry James, compare Byrne's behaviour with that of Val Schier. Val is not hiding behind some puppet taking continuous side swipes at Manning. She has demonstrated ethical, professional behaviour by remaining silent and giving her successor a fair go. That's because Val Schier has NORMAL psychology. Your very close mate, Kev, does not.

Hey Terry, right on, it sure got going alright. Just ask Tom Hedley, Udo Jattke and Roy Lavis (and his brilliant business-savvy sidekick, the Hon Member for Leichardt). And then there's Paul at Villa Romano, sequestrating the public footpath for his Esplanade eatery; a place regularly frequented by Byrne as it happens. The list goes on ...
Yep, bring back the good ol' days.

"The King" in his own words 27/12/2008-lest we forget:

"The Taipans couldn't beat a drum let alone another team so it's hard to know who'll care when they are gone".

"The Liberal National Party is a joke"

"The Cairns CBD is still a boring crab hole. Not a single political, civic or business leader is doing anything to change it"."

"The Japanese are so bored with Cairns that Qantas axed flights and replaced some of them with a budget airline. If Jetstar is still flying between Cairns and Japan in 12 months time it'll be a miracle".

Obviously the words of someone with vision and passion for the electorate he is supposed to represent...looks like "the joke' is on him now.

The redevelopment of waterfronts creates tremendous opportunities to reintegrate historic city centers with their adjacent waterways and to facilitate growth that would otherwise move to the outskirts of the city.

if only our bumbling leaders were guided by global best practice....

As ruby said in the beginning, Manning has everything going for him. No other Mayor in Cairns history from as far as I know has had the benefit of a majority Council Team, a compliant and supportive media machine, plus his own political party in the State Government. Moreover his own political party doesnt have any opposition. Manning has a dream run yet he's already demonstrated he doesn't have any vision, can't make decisions, is easily stood over by others, and overall doesn't inspire confidence.

The biggest problem Cairns has with the Japanese tourist market anon @ 1030 is they come only once and never return after being ripped off. They return year after year to Honolulu and the Gold Coast. As my daughter said to me on her mobile as she waited in the lounge area at Narita airport,"Dad,I am looking at a travel brochure for Cairns, fake image is taken looking down across the esplanade pool. The image has a long white beach stretching north towards the airport, complete with umbrellas and bikini clad nubiles"When the tourist arrives, checks in,opens the curtains and sees mud they spend the next week trying to get out of the place.Remember Kevin Byrne's idea when he was in charge that he wanted locals to bow to Japanese tourists to make them feel welcome.

More statements by The King from the days when talk was cheap... What happened Gavin ? Looks like all the grand visions and calls to action have been replaced by feasibility studies so far.

Cairns Post January 29, 2011

"The fact is we can’t rely on politicians. They are creatures of habit and they are mostly only good for endless rounds of masterplans and feasibility studies and other mechanisms of time wasting and in-action."

"In terms of infrastructure, I hope we can start work on a realistic, scaled back version of the Performing Arts centre".

"All of these things can be kick-started this year. We just need to do it ourselves and drag the politicians kicking and screaming along with us".

Bob R. said...

ROFL, Anonymous above. King's own words, "The fact is we can't rely on politicians.............."
Well we sure as fucks sake can't rely on King for anything.

Never mind Seth. Manning will amuse himself over the next few years playing games with the Councillors and CRC staff. Give him another year or so and the work atmosphere within CRC will be toxic with suspicion and resentment.

Yeah King is fearless and hard hitting when he has his keyboard and is protected by News Limited. Yeah he's a fucken roaring lion, mate. He takes on anyone with those booger picking fingers tapping furiously away on his keyboard. Yet when its other people taking the piss out of him with their booger picking fingers tapping away on their keyboards, he shits himself. He can't hack it hey.
Hey King you miserable gutless sack of crap, how'd you be if some journo got stuck into you every week like you did to Schier hey?

Steve J. said...

Just read King's maiden speech in Parliament. He lied AGAIN about being "the first non-Labor" member for Cairns. Doesn't the fuckwit know how to do research? For the record King, you are NOT THE FIRST NON-LABOR MP for Cairns. A fellow by the name of BARNES beat you.

Just on the matter of the Entertainment Precinct. I see where the Queensland Museum is currently showing an Egyptian Exhibition which has four well preserved Egyptian Mummies in it. This is the sort of stuff we could have had here, had the Entertainment Precinct with a regional museum gone ahead. Oh, but what did Mackenzie and King say about it?? Oh, that's right, it would be a "white elephant". No-one here would want to go and see four well preserved Egyptian Mummies.
