NEW ATTACKS ON HILLBILLY WATCH, ODDLY FROM BENEFICIARIES OF THE ALTERNATIVE PRESS

A recent email sent by activist Geoff Holland to his struggling "Save City Place" group included a swipe at the Hillbilly Watch blog by the self-appointed activist.  Holland unabashedly points at our exposé of the emails between Gavin "Don't Rape Me" King and Mayor Bob "Screwdriver" Manning that allude to "secret deals" on the opening of Lake Street and then "cautions" HBW has generated "at least one hoax" previously.

Once the emails were exposed, the mainstream Cairns press was used by King and Manning to "spin" the emails as harmless, despite the likely criminal violation of doing city business in such a secret, untransparent way.

We've also seen the blogger of the Raj Cairns Report (a mostly nonsensical regurgitation of the wackiest news and irrelevant factoids that can be found) jump on yesterday's story about the Cairns Post removing editorial and printing functions from Cairns.

A story that HBW reported over a year ago!  And after we reported this long-term strategy by News Limited to end all but perfunctory office staff in Cairns, we were widely criticised as "generating a hoax".

The LNP in Queensland is out to stifle dissent.  A Twitter account called "Qld_Mythbusters" was recently exposed as a tool being run out of Campbell Newman's office.  And Gavin King's Facebook page is monitored 24/7 to ensure no negative or critical comments are made.

And then there's the biggest tool in the shed, John MacKenzie, where no lie is too big and where facts are twisted to suit his Cairns-destroying agenda.  In a tutorial in today's program, he "educated" his hillbilly listeners to the fact that our government spends over $25 Billion per year on programs for the aboriginal community - and then tells the listener to remember to point out this fact when someone suggests that some Australians are racist.  This blog isn't big enough to point out the absurdity and racism in this kind of argument.

If the progressive community in Cairns is going to keep our local pollies in check, we need to keep our eyes on the target and not get sidetracked with trivia.  With Warren "Run for the Door" Entsch clearly worried about the 1000+ daily readers of this and other Cairns blogs, and Cairns Post being reduced to a daily paper of press releases and hooker ads, the new media's time is arriving.

HBW, you did expose the fact that The Post was going to close down a lot of its operations here in Cairns, last year. In fact, you did so before Gavin King, knowing he would lose his great little job there, decided to "run" for public office.

Notice the brazen, pugilistic way that King and Manning handled the discovery they were breaching all communication protocols. They were going to "get after" the person who exposed them. "Leaving no stone unturned" according to Manning. What a conniving, scurrilous pair of snakes. What else have they been deciding in secret communications?

I get the feeling LNP will not tolerate those that disagree as well or if they do with gritted teeth. Why go into politics if you cannot handle disageement? That is what underpins a democracy, not that QLD is one though. Not sure what Greg Holland is on about really but would not worry about the man in the streets opinion. We should concentrate on those that influence and those that are elected.

Does Mck realise that the money spent on Aboriginal mainly go to support regional jobs for white people more often than not? If they cut the spending the Aboriginals probably will not notice as they get nothing at any rate, but Cairns will get another kick in the guts with Indigenous industry job cuts.

Is there any intelligent life in Cairns?

Goodness me, Anonymous 07.15, didn't you know it is perfectly alright for Manning and King to be secretive and non-transparent because they've got JOHNSONS. Mackenzie won't berate them, but imagine if it was say, Val Schier in secretive communication with the MP? Can't you hear Mackenzie bellowing, his voice thick with indignation, about "Where's the transparency?" The duplicity is just mind boggling. One rule for women, another for men. You know I can't help myself from wondering about King. I intuit that he will go further into the "murky world" than we could possibly anticipate. That's about all I am prepared to say.

Love to see HBW in tabloid form

The further the Cairns Post moves away from journalism towards re-writing press-releases the less authority they will carry and the less people will believe what they write or buy the paper.

People buy papers for journalistic content. These days, if you want press releases, you can just log onto the governmental website, you don't need to buy the paper to read them.

Analysis or breaking stories which people are trying to hide should be what the Cairns Post is about, sadly it is nothing like that.

I had it on good news limited authority a little while ago that this most recent decision to go to Townsville was carefully managed so that there would be no fall-out for King - leaving him a clear run in his campaign, which itself was managed by the Cairns Post

Cairns Post going maybe a good thing. Better no news than the garbage King produced.

The more 'they' complain about HBW, the more people will seek it out. As for The Cairns Post; Thursdays for the TV guide - though even that can found online, so might reduce to zero copies a week. And the best way to deal with such biased one-eyed media (Post, 4CA) is to shun them. Let the accountants inform them when time is up.

I think all Holland wants is to save "City Place" because of its past history as a venue for community gathering. However, the gathering place has well and truly moved onto the esplanade. Then there is the under utilised Munro Martyn Park which was the main community gathering place prior to City Place being built around 1983/84. Frankly, I think City Place has had its day. It was good for its time, but the city is evolving. Within a few years, there will be more residential complexes within the CBD and fewer commercial premises.

GET A JOB!!!

"The LNP is out to stifle dissent." I believe they will ramp this up when the cutbacks to the health services and other public services start biting the public. ruby, I wonder about King too, more than any other politician I can ever recall in our region. We have already seen what he is capable of doing, and yes it does make you wonder, to what lengths will he go to satisfy his ambitions?

Gee Terry, if it's the same old same old every day, why do you keep reading it? No one is forcing you.

It's just that the growing number of readers of this blog aren't all LNP suckups like yourself and can't stand by and see what your mates have done to Cairns in only 6 months!

Hate filled? Have you been listening to the same old same old from your LNP shock jock Macca over the past 4 years???

Terry, you awful sententious know-it-all, some of us are finished with work - retired, and having the time and the interest to delve into local issues as well as the broader political scene. I have never stood for public office, nor did I ever aspire to.

@ Terry

LOL

I'm not anyone you've listed above. Nor do I know any of them personally. I also have a job.

But i do like this blog. Very much. Because I'm sick of the stagnated old fart boys-club running Cairns and shitting on any great progressive thinkers and/or alternative ideas that might just give this city a kick it needs. Also, I think you'll find Terry there's more than 20 or so vocal lefties reading this blog and the word is spreading.

It's also nice to see some genuine discussion in the comments that aren't hijacked daily by gavin's new girlfriend boyd (i'm big and tough and manly and i used to be a bouncer and play footy and i'll sit on you if you disagee with me) scott.

(Come on boydy, i know you read this blog too, come get some you dopey piece of shit)

BS said on Facebook he never lets his wife talk about politics. I think Liberal need to get away from the angry failed bigoted white guy, Why buy the recipe for disaster?. I mean they are ones wrecking the joint. :)

Same here Jack ! You are spot on. Why do idiots like Terry (and there are plenty more in the Cairns Post online section) immediately assume that people who have a different opinion or frequent this blog are on the dole ? "Get a job!"; what a pathetic excuse for debate. Not only do I have a job Terry, I employ people as well. That doesn't mean that I am not able to access this blog during business hours, does it now ? This blog would not exist if local media did their job properly.

Gainfully employed by a multinational, thanks Terry. I'm under 30, so it takes about 2 minutes out of my day to have a look at what's going on around Cairns. Unfortunately, I have this thing in my brain where I care about fellow human beings and don't just do whatever's best for myself, like many people I've met in Cairns and like most of our elected representatives here in Cairns.

I run a business as well Terry, right in the CBD in fact. Mackenzie's malignant persecution of our first ever female Mayor brought me to HBW. It just wasn't cricket ole boy.

I came here to live in 2010 because I love Cairns. I'm a self funded retiree and whooping for joy that finally Qld will be back on track with the LNP. I thought this page was operated by a female and I'm right. Obviously you are 30 something and idealistic but your page made me chuckle for the sheer rubbish you write like your pal Jenna Price. Not noice dearie. Other than that, have a nice day :)

It horrifies me to see so much hatred for the people that are running our lovely town. Such negative remarks could cause so much damage. I think Gavie is doing a marvellous job, he may be inexperienced but he is trying.
And isn't that the Australian way.!
