GAVIN KING STUNNINGLY MUTE ON LOCAL/STATE ISSUE - CARE TO GUESS WHY?

As the outrage grows against the Cairns Regional Council for the sneaky, non-agenda decision to remove 250 meters of bike path on the Esplanade (clearly a "pet peeve" of Terry James), the Cairns Post today posted a comprehensive summary of the issue, with the news that the State (who provided Cairns with virtually all of the bike path funding.  This provided jobs to Cairns during some of the worst moments of the economic downturn, and also created new, badly needed infrastructure.  The story finished with the most shocking statement I've read in the Cairns Post in some time:

"CAIRNS MP GAVIN KING DECLINED THE CAIRNS POST'S REQUEST FOR AN INTERVIEW ABOUT THE CYCLEWAY"

Residents all over Cairns were heard choking on their Weet-Bix this morning as they read this shocking statement.

When did Gavin "Don't Rape Me" King ever decline to have an opinion on anything?  How is it Mr. Big-Mouth didn't care to provide his opinion to his former employers at the Cairns Post??  This fucker would have an opinion on celestial dynamics, if he had any idea what it was.

And it made us wonder - what DOES Gavin King think about bicyclists, and other non-auto commuters?

Dang if he didn't publish a column about it - on 2 April 2011 as a matter of fact.  Archived at the Cairns Post (and HBW) for posterity.

Some of the gems in this column, titled "Pedal Power and Other Misdirected 'Solutions'"

"Love it, apart from having to risk life and limb by sharing the roads with the worst drivers in Australia"

On riding the bus:  ". . a person who really should be institutionalised for everyone's benefit sits next to (me) despite an array of empty seats. . . the person will either be a serial killer, or smell bad".

And then more of his apparent real, personal opinions on Cairns - the published opinions he relied on to get him elected Member:  "We're sick of empty promises, high prices, the lack of action and the void of leadership.  We should get on with the scaled-back version of the cultural precinct, revitalise the CBD, and bring state departments and public servants to Cairns."

Gavin, you've been full of empty promises along with the required LNP horseshit, the prices continue skyward thanks to your LNP mates, your lack of actions are duly noted, and your leadership chances died with Usain Bolt stupidity.  You did your best to kill the scaled-back cultural precinct, stripped Cairns of the $38 Million needed to revitalise the CBD, and cheered as your leader Joh Bjelke Newman FIRED public servants in Cairns, increasing our unemployment.

Thanks for writing today's Hillbilly Watch, Mr. King.  How do you look at yourself in the mirror in the morning?  How do explain to Saskia and Percy that "daddy gets told what to believe now, he can't believe what he believes, and I'm not a man, but a paid-for political tool".  What does it feel like to have your every pore oozing the bile of a man who's sold his soul to sell-out his community?

The kind of existential questions that confront an educated person who's been self-stripped of his dignity.  Keeping his mouth shut now seems the most reasonable alternative.

HBW, King "an educated person""?? He proudly boasts that he never went to university. "Educated" is another thing Gavin "Don't Rape Me" King is not!!

Jethro said...

Could be that King is keeping his mighty mouth shut because he supports the CRC decision but doesn't want the brickbats from the community. On the other hand, he doesn't seem to have any problem in jumping in on Council business when it might be popular with the community, ie the Chinese Festival. He's obviously cherry picking which Council issues will give him the best rapport with the electorate.

On one hand, we accept that all pollies are hypocrites - that's an essential requirement in the Westminster system. A local member subrogates his views for "the good of the party". But you're right that King has taken this abandonment of principals to new heights. He was elected primarily because he seemed an "outsider" that would go to bat for FNQ in Brisbane. He's in fact done a turncoat that anyone would have struggled to predict.

Stunning.

Gavin King's own words say it all:

We all know politicians from both sides are manufactured on conveyor belts and forced to act like performing parrots to spread a unified party message.

Another Gavin King voter??? This in the comments section of the Cairns Post regarding the age of aboriginal art found near Kuranda...
"Mr Stadler said the results showed what could be done in restoring Australia’s Aboriginal rock artwork, which could be up to 40,000 years old." Can't be so! The Bible teaches that the Earth & infact the WHOLE Universe is only 6000-10,000 years old and Noah's Flood supposedly killed EVERYBODY on Earth except his family just 4000 years ago? ;)

Almost as funny as Phil Crockford's comments.

King is obviously still waiting for instructions from Brisbane. He hasn't got McKenzie available to guide him through this issue and the LNP is still coming to terms that they don't apparently control their own government departments.

Another badly planned ad-hoc council decision to pay back a few business owners (donors!) and to placate the uneducated hillbillies, who demand they can park right next to wherever they and their overweight lazy kids want to go.

And of course plenty of brainless idiots in this city love to hate cyclists, the same as they hate crocs, black people, Asians, tourists in general and probably themselves as well.

It was all so easy to be a smart-arse and snipe from The Cairns Post sidelines. So tell us Gavin, what do you now think of Delsie Boyle's efforts to represent her constituents? Because, love her or hate her; her efforts on behalf of her electorate leave you looking like the lazy free-loading waste of space that you are.

Anonymous said...

I don't ride a bike although I have in the past. I will, however, be at the protest tomorrow because I don't like the way these Unity Councillors are dictating to us their boring outlooks. Where's the vision? I'm hoping there are lots of walkers there too.

Speaking of Desley Boyle and her representation for Cairns. I just walked past the School for Long Distance, the Trinity Bay High School and the Cairns College of TAFE and know, first hand, from living in the area, just how much Desley Boyle did for Cairns. All of these facilities greatly expanded during Desley's term in office. Yet King had nothing but criticism for her alleging she did "nothing". Well King, it's your turn now, and what are you getting us hey?

Gavin King probably should resign Not sure why LNP put a newbie in such an important seat. I thought the same when Labor selected Lesina. The newbie should get Barron River or even Mulgrave but Cairns should get someone experienced as decisions impact the entire region.

Gavin's Mum said...

Gavin King will be in office for 9 years and may even end up as Premier. Desley the Boyle has GONE. Labor is the dysfunctional rump that other losers spurn. Get on yer bikes chumps, and make something happen.... if you can.

ruby said...

King's ineffectiveness as a Member of Parliament is largely due to the huge majority the Newman Government have in office. The LNP can easily afford to lose 30 plus seats at the next State Election, and still win Government. King, Trout and Kempton are not needed to make up the numbers. They are politically "expendable", and the LNP strategists would know this. A political party with the huge majority the LNP has, does not result in good governance as Queenslanders are learning, much to their great cost. King is losing his political capital at a rapidly escalating rate as election promises fail to be fulfilled, as will Kempton in due course once the Alcohol Management Plans are overturned in the communities. The ALP should win both those seats, Cairns and Cook, at the next State Election.

Anonymous said...

If Gavin doesn't make something fucken happen sometime real soon, he'll be the one on his bike, out of office and you can have him back all to yourself Gavin's Mum.

Anonymous said...

Anyone whose a local will recall the Aurukun and Lockhart riots in the 1980s. Wonder if Kempton was here then and understands why they happened? King wasn't here and wouldnt have a clue.

If Gavin King had any integrity, he would resign. It's pitiful (and perversely pleasant) to see one who set out to mock and deliberately torment those in public life whom he secretly envied - simply to morph into the most emasculated member of a government micro-managed by a dictatorial bully-boy control freak. It's a very appropriate comeuppance and it gives clear meaning to the old adage 'what goes round come round'. He will simply be another seat-warmer doing sweet FA for the next three years, drawing his parliamentary pension whilst pondering the dismal future beyond. Just shows you; all that bravado at The Cairns Post was just the bluster of a weak man. Now too afraid to rock the boat and take on the party machine on behalf of the members of his electorate he is supposed to fight for. Yes Gavin, all that 'brave stuff' delivered to us in your 'Editor at Large' persona was all the talk of a coward. And now you are exposed.

Anonymous 21.12, perhaps it is even more pitiful that certain voters would believe a journalist who used his position to ruthlessly demonise sitting politicians would therefore do a much better job.

She obviously wasn't rat-arsed, Kitchen Slut (lucky for her I suppose)

Jethro said...

Even if King were to resign from the LNP and go "independent" in order to make loud noises about the needs of Cairns, and protest the loss of funding, Newman would still shaft him and Cairns. As King would well know himself, the LNP would send in their attack dogs en masse, just as they did with Schier, and they would turn on him with a vengence. It wouldn't be pretty. Thus King is stuck, as an emasculated, ineffectual, useless MP ignored by his own control freak Premier.

Anonymous said...

The Schier Council built that bicycle path after meeting with the cycing community and holding public consultation meetings. All the time Mackenzie was roaring away on is programme about "consultation". Now the Manning Council decides to rip this stretch of cycle path up without any public consultation and Mackenzie is silent. More DOUBLE STANDARDS.

Anonymous said...

Terry James, on ABC radio, arrogantly brushed aside today's protest. He claims it was the Cairns Post that urged the state government to ask CRC for an explanation. A worthy representative of the sort of pathetic, narrow minded backwater Cairns is rapidly becoming. Manning likewise refused to even consider the issue and consult with interest groups. Both are complaining about incorrect reporting in the media and so is King. Not so nice when you are on the receiving end for a change...

Anonymous said...

Great show of strength by the local cycling community this morning. Quote of the day came from Richie Bates "contrary to local belief NO CAR SPACES WERE LOST in the construction of the new cyclepath".

Dean said...

I think King thought it was all a bit easy and he would be able to make a difference. How naive he was! Two verbal slap-downs from the bosses down south and King is marching in lock-step.

It's no different to other LNP or ALP reps, but at least most of them didn't spend the previous years preaching about how they'd do it better and be different.

He's as spineless as he is poorly educated.

Alison Alloway said...

Surely most people realise that the city just cannot cope with a never ending increase in vehicular traffic? That there are definite limits to the sheer numbers of cars any city centre can hold? When I was in the USA a couple of years back I saw where more people are using small, portable electric scooters around central business districts or out in the suburbs. I predict they will soon become a feature in Australian cities, including Cairns.

McKenzie tried to speak today, but his voice packed it in after one hour. All that roaring is coming back to haunt him..

I think the CRC is just trying to flex its muscles to placate the rednecks that sponsored them and cover up the fact that they have no vision for Cairns and have achieved nothing so far, except losing us millions of dollars of funding and approving dodgy developments.

Dean said...

They've paid their backers alright. The millions they've given to developers and approvals they'll give between now and election time will give their sponsors plenty of bang for their buck.

Face facts, the majority of people have too little time, education or money to become interested or care about politics. The only people who get involved are those who are in it for personal benefit. Either as contributors or candidates, they do it for the $$, not for the good of the majority. King and Trout are included in this.

Yes Anonymous, the Gods are kind with cueball losing his voice. I agree. Having insomnia and awake in the wee hours of the morning, I just re-read a post on CairnsBlog, dated 21st May 2011 following the selection of Kirsten Lesina as the ALP candidate for Cairns. There are some brilliant posts there from a Terry Vance concerning the rise of sexism and misogynism - oh well before Ms Gillard's notable speech. Vance makes the point over and over, substantiating them with facts that double standards are at play in electioneering and public office. Lesina, for example was viewed by other commentators as being "controlled" by factions or by Brisbane, yet none would admit the male candidates would be "controlled" at all despite Vance pointing this double standard out.
It has been quite an exercise viewing this debate nearly 18 months after it was written. Yes, we do now have a male representative, who clearly obeys the Brisbane directive. I wonder what all his supporters think now?

Anonymous said...

The problem with democracy is anyone can be elected(nothing wrong with that) but the down side is individuals who know nothing about anything get a voice that effects us all. Not to long ago journalists, lawyers, used car salesmen and those in government were voted the most untrustworthy people in society.By the very nature of their occupation they have to create spin, lie, fabricate and twist an agenda to suit the occasion. King is just being normal for the limited experience he had as a journalist and now as a pollie, both of which he is then and now living up to our expectations with.

Dean said...

I was shocked at the low calibre of people running for office in Cairns when I first arrived just prior to the Schier election (in which I didn't vote).

It's only gotten worse since then. Who elects a retiree, a car salesman, a semi-failed businessman into office? A town with little alternative.

Lesina has zero life experience. Bates appears to be the only one with any common sense and he joined the team led by the car salesman with the retiree at the head.

All the business leaders in town, who would have been the mayors of old simply aren't interested.

Perhaps if they cut it from 10 divisions to 5 and paid them all double we might get some decent representation? More likely it would just be an even bigger rort.

Tony Hillier said...

Dean's assertion has validity. As a Cairns resident of more than 25 years standing and as an assiduous observer of and commentator on the local political scene, it is my honest contention that we have never had poorer representation in all three tiers of government than we have at the moment.

Local politics desperately needs capable, free-thinking, intelligent people who can serve the community without fear or favour. With a few notable exceptions (like Crs Leu and Pyne) we currently have self-servers purportedly representing our interests in Council and in State and Federal parliament.

Correction anon 14.40 it was the Govt body ACMA who ordered Jones to be "retrained" This is equally funny as this organisation virtually let that other foulmouth Sandilands off the hook for his disgusting contributions on commercial radio (do a google if you are interested!)

From The Cairns Post: "MAYOR Bob Manning has stepped in to reach a compromise with local cyclists, who yesterday put on a huge show of strength against the council's decision to rip up part of a dedicated bike path on the Esplanade".
The only reason James dumped this retrograde idea upon us was as payback to Val Schier. The bike way was her conception and therefore anyone using it were her leftie supporters. It's gone a bit awry, to his great surprise, and he now has to get Manning has to come in and 'rescue' him with a face saving compromise (so called).. Doesn't matter that $17,000 PLUS is going to be wasted to get the egg off his face, you can't have Unity looking like the spiteful fools that they are.

James first publicly blamed the Cairns Post for tipping off the Transport Department about council's short sighted and vindictive decision to waste rate payer's money on removing existing cycling infrastructure, rather than increasing it. The Cairns Post firmly denied the accusation, making James look like a clueless tosser.

James then accused cyclists of breaking the law (how about motorists , Terry ?).

He was very uncomfortable during the ABC radio interview, because he had to answer real questions from a proper journalist.

Very different from getting a free leg-up from the fawning McKenzie and his adoring bike, bat and crocodile hating fan-boys.

Manning has now stepped in with a sensible compromise and I imagine the gutless 7 will vote whichever way Bob tells them to.

Bob has also committed himself to spend an addition 6 million dollars on bicycle infrastructure. The Hillbillies will be frothing at the mouth ! All that money could have been spent on more parking after all.

A big win for the cycling community and a reminder that we needs to stand up to this incompetent, regressive council to get good outcomes for the community.

MESSAGE TO CRC DIVISIONAL COUNCILLORS: Re the bike track rip-up: This proposal has nothing to do with Parking, Cycling or Safety. This proposal is about Terry James and Unity settling old scores - getting even. The bike track was a Val Shier council initiative and it exists as a magnificent legacy to the 'woman' who had the temerity to unseat Byrne as mayor - and thereby bringing some desperately needed accountability to Cairns Council. The Unity haters have never forgiven her for that. James, in a spiteful attempt at payback, has sought a symbolic get-even by proposing the rip up of 300 metres of prime serviceable bike track without any consultation whatsoever. He has miscalculated. The opposition to this proposal has been overwhelming and completely unexpected, both by James and Manning, who must have been privy to this motion. Both have failed to realise that Cairns has moved on from the Byrne anything-goes days of a compliant docile electorate and ineffective opposition to their dodgy deals. We've had a term of good local government, even though most are only belatedly coming to that realisation.
Now you will be asked to accept a Manning 'compromise', whereby a perfectly good bike track is replaced by another (perhaps almost as good) bike track. For what purpose? Nothing changes - no net safety increase, some issues are addressed, others are created. Same-same. Except! Tens of thousands of ratepayer dollars will be wasted in an exercise of removing the egg from Terry James' face. Please rescind this proposal, and please reject the 'compromise'.

Anyone else missing the zest and energy of Val's mayoral term? Val was 'there', you would personally see her at most of the city's events, be it a Cairns Choral Society event, or the Ukulele festival (her own concept), or anything that promoted Cairns and its economy. Post mayoral office, she was even at the 'ride to work' breakfast the other day, rode her bike in from Machin's even though a dodgy hip has to be dealt with soon (heard that on her 4CA interview (no NOT McKenzie). She was our own hands-on mayor and so very approachable.
Conversely, has anyone actually seen Mayor Manning? At anything? Anyone?
I had a stand at the inaugural Mining Expo at the show grounds last weekend. It was lauded as a coup for Cairns (by no less than The Cairns Post) with many big-name companies exhibiting their businesses. Stood there representing my company, selling my wares, trying to drum up business. No sign of our mayor. No sign of any of our divisional councillors, no member for Cairns, no member for Leichardt, no chamber of commerce, nor Advance Cairns. The Consul General for Papua New Guinea paid a visit, so I suppose someone in government was interested - though wrong government.
Wouldn't you think our politicians (of all tiers), or our 'business leaders' from the plethora of organisations claiming to speak for business, would have made the effort to present themselves at this event? Oh well, I guess it didn't involve Chinese tourists, or a shopping centre, or a real estate development, so not important. No wonder Townsville is going gang-busters.

Manning doesn't go and speak publicly anywhere! He just can't do it. Boring to watch on T.V. also. The Travelling Film Festival attracting huge crowds and where was the Mayor to welcome and open this prestigious event? Actually saw ex Mayor Val in the audience supporting it once again. While on the subject saw Cr. Shilling swanning outside the lobby of the Civic Theatre Brass, Sweat and Tears concert last night. The lobby was crowded, people trying to get drinks and ending up sitting on the steps and garden area outside. He surely must have eyes and ears and realize the need for a CEP (shovel ready) after seeing this show full of very talented locals. Hope he slipped off his seat also.

Makes you wonder how many of the cyclists who participated in the protest used their vote to get Val out of office?? Egg on face anyone?
The CP is giving the new mayor a very easy run compared to the vilification of both Val and Di Forsythe -remember that disgraceful front page about Lyons House? So untrue -yet no-one came out to defend all the great work done by Di when she was in office. Both she and Val were out and about talking to people and making themselves available to anyone who wished to raise a point -socially or otherwise. This latest lot are the unseen who seem to be in the pockets of "big business" Cairns style -think "HEAD WORKS" for example -this decision is going to cost us ratepayers plenty. Wake up people you have been had big time.

This is something King should have done as a matter of courtesy. I now know three, possibly four people who have lost their jobs locally. I agree, it is very poor that King doesn't know the exact figures. Could you imagine the uproar if the Member for Cairns was female and Labor and said she didn't know how many Cairns public servants had lost their jobs? She would be crucified.

You're all so mean and cruel to me. Why would I comment on that stupid bicycle path for anyway? It's Council business so I left that for Bob. He knows what I think on the matter which is all that counts. As for number of people who have lost their jobs in the public service, that is the responsibility of the public service and has nothing to do with me. Of course I don't know and that's what I told The Cairns Post. "How the FUCK would I know?" I said to some lisping trainee journalist. They didn't cover my lovely luncheon meeting where I was the guest (awesome food!) of Chinese Ministers Xhu Zhang, Fo Dong and Xhin Xxaiou now did they? Nor did they cover my guest speakers dinner meeting with HS Vision and the Gasparin people re the new 6 star hotel and Woollies centre in the CBD. No. Instead The Cairns Post gets smart arse young trainees to ask me about that no good useless report ito dredging the inlet and how many lazy dickhead useless public servants have been given the arse. As if I would care to bloody know? We're doing an excellent job in managing the State, turfing out the dying drones and all these gross, disgusting deformed things, out of the free mursing homes, like Eventide. Can you imagine, people thinking they can die at the taxpayers expense? Unbelievable. Then they had all these disgusting lumps of so called humans there, being fed and given beds at the taxpayers expense. I mean, the taxpayers are actually keeping these things alive! Then there are all these old bludgers who wanted cheap taxi rides. You know there isn't such a thing as a FREE LUNCH but those bludgers can't understand it. Then there are the bludgers who expect to get their leg or arm prosthesis subsidised from the Health Dept. Hand outs, hand outs bloody everywhere! Then there were the old bludgers crying and fainting when we turfed them out of the Government run caravan park. I mean, honestly? You see what those Labor dogs did? Dogs! That's why I am so against Labor. They don't give a shit, no, not a shit for the real people. I have always said that. My philosophy is one where I am absolutely for the people. I believe in USER PAYS and NO FREE LUNCHES by golly we're going to see that everyone pays. All the people will pay, for reproducing biological stuff ups like deformed (ugh gross) babies, for getting sick, for being lame, and for dying. USER PAYS. We're doing a fantastic job in running the State, letting Councils abolish all that stupid green tape and all the money developers had to fork out in head works. Let the ratepayer pay for them, after all they will be using the hotels and shopping centres. It,s ratepayers money better spent than on an idiotic Entertainment Precinct that dickhead Laborites think would attract kiddies wanting to see (of all things) Mary Poppins or stupid old biddies wanting to see Phantom of the Opera. Well toodle pips for now. I'm off to another awesome dinner as guest of Minister Fo Dong. He's a lovely guy, coughs a bit and lol he has that nasty habit of spitting, but I am very culturally aware and can take it. Toodle pips everyone.

Well Bling, you certainly are showing the people of Queensland your LNP philosophy, "USER PAYS" no two ways about it. See where you're closing down more and more State financed nursing homes, so the elderly poor will have nowhere to go to die. Yeah, there's no such thing as A FREE LUNCH as you put it, especially when you're old and poor, but not if you're a developer wanting a handout from the Council for "headworks".

Was anyone else as surprised at ch7/9 footage last night of the leading players in Cairns business sitting down to a meeting to decide our future? Two things stood out for me 1)no Mayor -he was at a more important meeting elsewhere it seems and 2)not one woman was present.

Anonymous, the lack of female representation has been covered on another thread. This shouldn't surprise anyone. The LNP State Government have the least number of female politicians in Australia and in fact, have fewer female MPS than does Afghanistan. A characteristic of arch-conservative parties is their disdain for women.

You are right anon 6.42 just check the times and you will see that I raised the issue of female representation first -HBW then carried the story.
