SAME WEEK SOME COUNCILLORS VOTE TO BEGIN DISMANTLING BIKE PATHS IN THE CBD, O'HALLORAN ATTEMPTS TO CONVINCE THE RATEPAYERS HE'S A FAIR-DINKUM BICYCLIST

One motion sneakily moved thru Cairns Regional Council by Cr. Terry James last week was a vote to dismantle two blocks of the very popular new bicycle track built along the Esplanade - TO BE REPLACED BY MORE OCEANFRONT CARPARKS.  Another expensive, unbudgeted item for the ratepayers to shoulder; this item was not on the public agenda and was agreed to despite no one having a clue how many hundred thousands of dollars it would cost.  More borrowed money signed off by Bob Manning, who's looking to be the most fiscally-irresponsible Mayor for Cairns - EVER!

This is the narrowest area of the Esplanade, where walkers, bicyclists, skateboarders, and others are squeezed close together - the area where this bikepath is needed the most.

And in an ironic twist, Cr. Richie Bates, who voted "NO" was paired with Cr. Max O'Halloran today in a lame attempt to promote the national "Ride2Work Day".  This event has been a big success the last few years as the previous Schier Council made long-needed investments in the city's big path infrastructure.

In the Ride2Work Cairns promotional photo, O'Halloran's skill on the bicycle is quite clear - THE DICKHEAD HAS HIS HELMET FASTENED UP BACKWARDS.

Good'onya Max.  You're not fooling anyone.

Although I am not wanting any bicycle pathways distadvantaged, I think that the parking on the Esplanade in front of the hospital needs opening up. Once upon a time (about 10 years ago) there were lots of parking spaces for people wanting to visit the Hospital, & in the past few years, it has been a nightmare, & I say 'nightmare', because anyone wanting to visit a newly-injured friend or family has had a hard time to find a park, as I discovered a couple of months ago. If anything needs opening up on the Nard, it's outside the hospital. Bugger the rsst.

Isn't the new high-rise car park built for this very purpose? This may not be relevant to Cairns, but is still a reality check: One hour in the Royal Melbourne Hospital; $10.00 ... and no street parking whatsoever.
That said: Why take an environmentally useful public asset such as a bike path to turn over to the almighty car. Aren't we supposed to be encouraging the reverse?

The reverse helmet has to be a Richie Bates revenge!! Hilarious!

Hillbilly I think you have the wrong bikepath. I am often down near the skate park and parked down lake st near the hockey fields for lunch and the roadside bikepath is is lucky to have one rider every 10 mins. Complete waste of space.

Hillbilly watcher is right - this is the beginning of a slippery slope with many at council wanting to remove all of th bikeways.

I am very much in favour of bikeways, but I believe many of the existing ones are badly designed. We need separate bikeways along all major thoroughfares in this city from Gordonvale to Palm Cove. We also need a major change of attitude, which might take a generation, considering that this place is controlled by a bunch of dinosaurs.

I have heard Max on radio a few times. He sounds like a tool who can't believe his luck that he scored such a cushy job. REX theatre, too bad, too late now. CEP, what CEP, any other issues, sorry no money, don't you worry, she'll be right, maaate...

Cr. Rob Pyne was crook (as opposed to 'a crook) and missed that meeting. Had he been there he would have voted against that as well.
Regards,
Not Rob.
PS - Rob says it is the 1st ordinary meeting he has missed in 5 years on council - he sure is the peoples champion!

I have supported the previous Shier Council but this was without doubt the dumbest and most wasteful thing her Council did! Absent any strategy or thought as it replicated an existing bike path when a bike strategy could have been better deployed elsewhere!

Note: Lillian is spot on!

[" a vote to dismantle three blocks of the very popular new bicycle track"]

Where do you get THREE blocks from?

It's ONE block, where they made that part of the Esplanade one-way, and it's not a cycle track.

Rockhampton has a 1200 seater entertainment theatre with half our population. This city is run by old hillbilly blood, such as Un-Sir Bob Norman and his close relatives. Young folk think this place is a joke and are leaving in their droves. Even Rocky has more culture and community cohesion than this deep north backwater.

Max O'Halloran is someone I should have heard of?

according to Terry James the bike path is being removed because "speeding cyclists" are a danger to pedestrians ???? how about speeding cars, Terry ?

this must be the most backward, idiotic and regressive council this city has ever had.

Get used to it cyclists. When you consider that Irelands donated $40000 to the Unity team for the election and David Ireland wrote a piece in the Cairns Post saying that cycling in Cairns is only good for 3 months of the year at best, what a tosser. Bob's got to look after his mates. Can't sell more cars when the Council is encouraging people to ride bikes.

Cairns is one of the best places for Cycling in Australia.

It's the perfect mode of transport for people living between the Esplanade and the hills bounded by Whitfield and the range.

All it needs is a crossing adjacent to the Bruce Highway and cycling would service the Southern Suburbs as well. Less cycling means more car parking, meaning they need even more space.

When all the progressive cities around the World are building cycle paths - yes, including London where they cycle during the drab, dark, wet winter season, this non visionary council let by the old bloke ( back to basics) wants to attract more cars into the city. The Hospital has a huge new car park built by Bligh - go use it.

It is about time that progressive people in this town start mobilizing before we get dragged back to the 70's by this incompetent bunch of seat warmers. I never cease being amazed by the ridiculous 'arguments' you hear on talk back and letters to the editor. I think the so-called silent majority (of mainly loud, grumpy and unhappy middle aged males) should go out more and see how things are done in more progressive societies.

We just can't allow the white shoe brigade and their cronies in the LNP and the CRC to keep turning back the clock and go back to unsustainable, inappropriate development for the sake of endless growth and destroy what's left of this city in the process.

The member for Cairns has become the sort of politician he used to despise so much in absolute record time. More unapproachable than his much maligned predecessor, seldom seen or heard of, except for the odd media event or to support his boss in Brisbane and achieving no positive outcomes for his electorate whatsoever.

if i could sell my house for at least half of what i paid for it, i'd get the fuck outa this shithole. It has afeel of no progress and while we have Dads Army at the helm it will take for ever to get anything done.

To add insult to injury, this ignorant council has just given its security contract to a Townsville company !! The so-called silent majority has voted for in a bunch of ignorant clowns ( except for Julia and Rob) who will cause enormous damage to Cairns and will do them no favours whatsoever.

Cueball is misogynist, racist and also despises academics. Can you see a pattern? 4CA dump the bitch!!! Your listeners, such as dishonourable Mr Tenni are dying out and you need to move from 1960 to 2012 if you want to survive as a radio station.

well what are we waiting for. let's desroy the joint !

Safe bikepaths are there not just for people who ride bikes now but to encourage others to get out of their cars and onto a treadlie.
Bob Manning is just cruising in the position of Mayor, doesn't want to upset developer mates, likes being wooed and stroked by Macca, doesn't want to rock the the gravy train, the only message he transmits on TV interviews is with his shifty little eyes darting all over the place

I've come to the conclusion it's simply time to amalgamate all Councils north of Rockhampton. There's no need for 10 Councillors from Cairns. Perhaps if there was just one from the area in a Council of 10 based in Townsville (who would also have just one). We might get some common sense decisions. As it is, it's too easy to buy all the Councillors and force through nonsense plans such as this which benefit the few and disadvantage the many. We're also paying them all 100k for the privelege of making our lives just a little bit worse, just a little bit more dangerous.

James is the clown behind it all, Manning is just the rube put up front. Next election, he'll step aside and they'll put forward another rube or James' ego will get the better of him and he'll run himself and lose again. I can't believe there's over 3 more years of this. I'm going to invest in Chinese Tumbleweed.

I'm moving to Tasmania! This City has become a joke.

We could start a petition to amalgamate with Brownsville and Rocky and say we don't want any councillors for our (mental health) wards.
