WHAT KIND OF FIRST IMPRESSION WILL CAIRNS LEAVE ON OUR NEW CHINESE FRIENDS?

We're just moments away from the arrival of our first regularly scheduled Chinese airline flights.

Member for MacKenzie Gavin "Don't Rape Me" King along with Mayor Invisible and our tourism leaders have all told us these flights are the "saviour" of Cairns.

Sad that none of our "leaders" have done anything to spruce up the first view of Cairns that will shock and depress our Chinese friends.  An abandoned run-down petrol station isn't the view I want any of our visitors taking home.  But at least it will explain the run down CBD and dozens of empty, boarded-up shops.

Especially when compared to the view that greets arrivals to THEIR airport.

How ironic and terrible that we are opening our doors with such eager excitement and undisguised glee to hundreds of thousands of tourists from a country where 45% of their citizenry are afflicted with tuberculosis. Yet on the other hand we are seeing politicians running around like chooks with their head off squarking about tuberculosis in Papua New Guinea, deliberately ignoring the fact that the Queensland Government has slashed medical resources for tuberculosis management in this State.

China is very progressive right now and we are backward. They may find us quaint. To be very honest I see more Australians leaving on these flights than Chinese arriving. China has the world to discover and I doubt hillbilly hick towns will rate too highly. Never know though, maybe we should start some banjo souvenier shops and exploit our strengths.

Now now Jethro, cool it old fella. Dont have a cow, man. tb takes a bit of time to incubate and spread through the community so everyone is gunna be all excited like and counting their cash for a few years. Yeah the local pollies will be poo pooing any risks wait and see.

The initial drive; airport to intersection is pleasant enough as it winds through the mangroves, with views of the hill slopes ahead. Then it turns shabby. The much talked about link to Lake Street never gets off the ground, though you would think that a no-brainer. Firstly, it would take much of the city-bound traffic away from the congested intersection, and it would provide better ambiance into the city. What's the latest with this; still in the CRC bucket lists of things to do?

Blaming the blacks for contagion is typical of redneck politics. The rednecks and hillbillies in Cairns will suck it up.

China is progressive right now, hence it is doing well. Not sure how they will find Cairns where we reject progressive policy. I recall meeting some Chinese years ago who went to Sydney for a day just to go to an RSL (pre Star Casino) so if the casino pleases them they may forgive the fact the town is a dump. I think putting all our eggs in that one basket is totally idiotic though. Gavin is stupid. Nuff said really.

I'm sure some nutter will blame Val Schier.

Note that Beethoven is closing down, despite the fact that Manning & Co. have reversed the decision to one-lane part of Grafton Street. This happened on Manning's watch.

Where are the cries of : this council is sending business broke", while at the same time giving a 1.2 million dollars of rate payer's money to the developers of the new Woolworth's dominated shopping centre.

WHAT??? 1.2 million for another woolworths? Is this right. Crikey.

If you really want a gateway to the city turn the road from the airport to the esplanade pool into a four lane boulevard complete with spectacular overhead lights.Keep the road as strait as possible, use speed camera's on poles instead of speed humps. But grand ideas aren't part of cairns so it is a waste of time talking about ideas isn't it.

Another informative comment from anonymous 17:45. At least this person's keen interest in the comments here is obviously continuing to make them more aware of political opinion in this town. As a secondary effect, their comments haven made a marked improvement in the spelling department. B+ for effort anonymous!

The Cairns Post today carried a story (Daniel Strudwick) about tuberculosis. There is an interview there with Dr Vincent, the Director of Thoracic Services at Cairns Base Hospital. In it he clearly states the problems which occur when Governments such as the Newman Government de-centralises health care and hands certain services back to local boards.
I note however, the final paragraph of that story....
"Queensland's chief health officer Jeanette Young said the Government had reassessed a decision to disband the QTBC (QLD Tuberculosis Treatment Centre) and most of its clinicians would be embedded in Princess Alexandra Hospital."

If this is what has happened, and there seems to be some doubts, then the Government may be responding to people like myself, and HBW.

However, I don't know if this if embedding the QTBC in Princess Alexandra Hospital is satisfactory and also don't know for sure if screening of international tourists at the airport would be effective. There is still a lot I am not sure on.

However I am pleased that both HBW and The Cairns Post have taken this issue up and keeping it before the public. It is far too serious to ignore.

To show ourselves off to the world as we really are, perhaps we should prepare a tourist brochure starring Anonymous 21/10/12 17:45 and his family.

You know: a cover shot of the picturesque weatherboard humpy - sorry mansion - well-maintained post (occasionally)-and-rail(sometimes) fences with, galvanised rainwater tank with artfully placed rust holes, three-wheel fergie and harrow with mango tree growing through the middle, the corrugatd iron dunny - sorry modern, light and airy external conveniences.

Perhaps some happy family shots of Anon and the Missus whoopin' it up at the Hootenanny (love the tank top, cut-offs and boots, and the black eye make-up, Ma).

Potential tourists will love some snaps of the little-'uns - Anon Jnr (looks very like Uncle John) (Squinty, Gimpy, Jethro, Abe, the 14th-Birthday twins Toyota (anyone can go for a ride) and BT50 (plenty of room in the back, boys), Elly Mae, Albert (Einstein - he can read and do simple arithmetic up to seven, the number of digits he was born with), Rube and Dickhead (he's the bright one, takes after his old man, whoever he is).

We could include a peek inside the well-appointed kitchen (a sink), the tastefully decorated lounge - the modern art installation Pile of Empties - is bound to be a hit, and finally the family bedroom, complete with bed - no need for a blanket, let's all just snuggle up to get warm, eh Anon?.

The Australian newspaper is reporting that tensions have reached a boiling point between The Courier Mail and the Newman Government. Doesn't surprise me since Newman demanded the media pay $$$ to cover the parliamentary sittings which is unprecedented in the history of Westminster Government. The Courer Mail has also done a fair job in trying to keep the Newman Government accountable to the public, which they basically have to do, as there isn't much of a parliamentary opposition left. If the media won't try and keep the Government accountable, then who the hell will???

"...and there were a lot of CONFIDENTIAL, commercial-in-confidence issues discussed at the forum" (Gavin King, quoted in The Cairns Post of today, regardng the recent meeting in Cairns). Here we go for secret handshake deals, cunning scams, ripoffs, gouging the ratepayers monies, all done under cover as in the dark and murky past of Cairns. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY, King you slimy, secretive, dissembling lying bag of shit?

Tony Hillier said...

We can't leave it to a handful of opposition MPs — all stretched to the limit, with multi-portfolios — and the Courier-Mail. We ALL have to hold the Newman Government to account!

The Cairns Post today carries a very concise example of how the city of Cairns is now being governed. A meeting was convened by the State Member because of criticisms of the Mayor, Bob Manning, by Anthony Mirotsos, President of the Cairns Chamber of Commerce. Mirotsos had openly criticised Manning on the "paralysis" of Cairns. So Gavin King called the meeting, not the Mayor. The Mayor apparently was not at the meeting, and Gavin King, the State Member, not the Mayor, facilitated the meeting, summed up its "vision" and communicated that to the media. Not the Mayor. So, we all know now who is running the city. Bob, old bean, you don't have to leave home, old digger. Just roll over in the bed of a morning, have a cuppa, and back to snooze again. Life is good for you mate. Getting lots of dosh for doing nothing. Let King do it all.

Dean said...

What do you mean let King do it all? Why should he get all the bribes, winks and secret deals? Bob wants in on that business too! Why did the Chamber hold this meeting prior to their CEO arriving? There were more leaders of the community absent from the meeting than attended. It's pretty much just King and the Chamber, who you would think would meet fairly regularly anyway.

what else would you expect from an washed up ex journalist stop the bullshit king and do what you are so well paid for unlike the public personal you have sacked just before xmas make you feel good i bet

Anonymous said...

King thinks so fucken little of the public servants who now will be worried shitless about their mortgages, their cars, what sort of future they have, that he doesn't know how many of them have been sacked. I know of FOUR myself with a fifth who is on maternity leave not knowing if she has a job to go back to or not.

Tony Hillier, did you see where The Australian tecently carried a story about how Newman and some Cabinet Ministers had a "robust" eeting with the Eidtor of The Courier Mail about the Courier Mail's coverage of the Newman Government??? Scarey fucken stuff. We got no political opposition to speak of, and only a fraction of the media to keep the bastards honest and accountable, and this is what the LNP go and do. Christ, as Im writing this, Im looking straight on at a photo of King on HBW. Put a peaked cap on his head and a uniform and he would look exactly like an SS Officer. I hope to Christ he's reading this, and feeling proud of the way Newman is tossing out the old people and the deformed kids from the nursing homes. Yeah, USER PAYS, except when you're a wealthy developer who can donate to the LNP.
