JOB DECIMATION DAY FOR CAIRNS BASE HOSPITAL ARRIVES

MONDAY MORNING NOTE -

ANOTHER BIG COMMUNITY STORY IGNORED BY THE CAIRNS POST

THIS UPDATE FROM THE MEETING:

190 PERMANENT JOBS TO GO, PLUS 44 OTHERS.  SAID TO BE "LARGELY ADMINISTRATIVE", BUT NO DETAILS YET.  DO ADMINISTRATORS NOT NEED TO HAVE JOBS & FEED THEIR FAMILIES?

Hospital Board Chairman "Un-sir" Bob Norman confirms the cuts, then magically states "they'll go out of administrative roles and more people will be on the frontline".  If you're sacking 234 people Bob, where do the "more people on the frontline" come from, eh?

And then Norman says "by that I mean the people that deliver babies and put bandages on people".

I hope he knows that our doctors and nurses do a whole lot more than this. . .

I have also been critical of the Cairns Post in the past for ignoring big stories. But perhaps this is just a case of the news taking longer to filter down to Townsville, where the staff are based.

So we find out today how many will lose their jobs, what services will be axed. At least hopefully it is over. See where King has announced an "inquiry" is now going to be held about the Hospital's capacities etc. You would think the fuckwit should have held that before all these "savings". Whatever happened to the Bligh study into whether the Base Hospital should get Tier One status? It should have been completed by now, but I dare say its findings have been suppressed like the original study into dredging of the Cairns Inlet, which we ONLY found out about when The Cairns Post went in to interview Gavin King and he gabbed it out.

the rumours in the industry are that they will announce 190 fulltime employee positions to go. This has been around for some time and before the recent federal government cutback based on revised population figures. With many staff on part time this could involve a lot more than 190 people. So much for newmans "no more cuts" in early january. Also lands corp cut 60 positions in fnq in 2012 and another 70 to go this year.

Vi L ... half the time the Compost wouldn't recognise a story if it jumped up and bit 'em on the bum.

Anonymous said...

Well, anyone know by this???

Anonymous said...

Just read a post by Stewie Traill...it is 200 jobs to go at the Base and Hinterland hospitals...dont know any more.

Tony Hillier said...

If the cuts are confirmed, this will be the most vicious axe wielding witnessed since Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Pit and the Pendulum"!

Tony Hillier said...

So does this mean that already heavily over-burdened nursing staff will be saddled with admin chores as well?

Let me get this right just for the exercise. As a second rate journalist king said the LNP couldn't organize a chook raffle, the base hospital will be tier one(more staff)crime will go down, the chinese are wierdo's,if a women dresses in a provocative way she deserves to be raped, jobs jobs jobs, the sun will shine, the angels will sing in the mango trees,we will be living in paradise in the first 100 days.I must be in an alternative Cairns!

We expect the Cairns Post to be missing in action. What are the prospects of a vigorous condemnation of the cuts by our fearless defender John McKenzie?

Tony Hillier, the Shitrag doesn't do stories. Just LNP spin.

why are these clowns allowed be board members in first place ??

King has to go.

Sooner rather than later.
Nobody is fighting for Cairns.

Anonymous said...

Could someone remind me what that muppet was 'knighted' for? That self serving pissant King and the LNP puppets 'running' the hospital board should be run out of town. If wasn't for the apathy and ignorance of the Far North Queensland voters people would be marching in the streets by the thousands in support of our health services.

Big deal.
A few more useless public servants get the boot.
Looking at the unemployment figures the other day, (falling in Cairns and across Queensland), it wont be long before they're back on some gravy train.
Now - let's start culling some of them useless Council jerks.

holy fucken shit i just heard one of my friends has lost her job now how the hell will she manage to raise her kids and pay her mortgage hey? she took out a mortgage because she reckoned she had a permanent job for many years. now thanks to Newman and King she's got shit all. how many lives are they fucken ruining?

Anonymous said...

Obviously the heroic Anonymous 18:49 didn't lose their job today. About as sensitive as our local MP. Sure your name isn't Gavin?

Lots of people will be in despair tonight, wondering how to pay the bills, if they have to sell the home, and what their future holds. It's a sad sad day. Sad too that Queenslanders, so many Queenslanders, all put their faith and trust in Campbell Newman that they gave him the greatest majority in an Australian parliament ever with scarcely any opposition, to keep him honest. When Newman said during the Election Campaign, "No public servant need fear me." People believed him. They really really trusted Newman. They really really believed he was going to improve life for them. Now close on 20,000 Queenslanders and their families have learned that Newman lies. There are more job losses coming in the TAFE and Education Departments. Sad.

Destiny Prophet said...

A friend of mine lost her job too - another Mum.

So Newman saves money out of his budget, blames it on the Feds and drives up unemployment costs for the Feds - I'd think it was planned that way, except they're not that clever.

Has there been any comment yet from the three headed hydra - Bob McKingzie?

None of the LNP Members were present and none have said anything. How bloody pathetic. They treat the electors with so much contempt that they don't show up to support their own actions. None of them of course would dream of sticking up for the Far North and the Base Hospital and demand to have the hospital upgraded to Tier One.

A Newman Government statement 2012-13 has revealed close to 3 billion dollars has been taken out of Queensland's health budget. HOW MANY FAMILIES HAS THAT IMPACTED ON.

Apparently, whilst the restructure of the Cairns and Hinterland HHS was announced yesterday with pretty graphics and lots of flow charts, the devil is in the detail. Individual positions were not identified to go in yesterday's announcement. Instead, staff will be notified by email within 48 hours.

How kind and considerate they are? They certainly know how to look after their staff's mental health, especially considering they are a health service.

Voluntary redundancy is also a feature for those that put their hands up. When the Sunshine Coast HHS offered redundacy, they were inundated with loyal staff who had had enough and wanted to retire.

Watch this space.......

Having worked in the public service at a time of staffing cuts, we were told to "work smarter not harder". So there will have to be a seismic shift in work practices as staff try to achieve more with less. All well and good, but my own experiences at trying to "work smarter not harder" met with resistance from staff who had the entrenched attitude that what was done in the past, always is, and therefore always will be. Secondly, those staff refusing to find corners to safely cut then had a habit of running to someone in management to snitch on those staff "working smarter, not harder." Management then took the smarter staff to task for "altering standard work practices". So then everyone was back to square one, and "working smarter, not harder" was abandoned.
Workload stress increased, morale plummeted and the workplace became toxic.
I saw this happen many times and literally gave up.

G King on radio news tues morn said the employment situation in Cairns has got better so all those who lose their jobs will be able to get another job somewhere else

Margaret (football fields) Cochrane the failed CRC Cr is on the Hospital board

Anonymous said...

Failed CRC Councillor Margaret Cochrane being appointed to the Hospital Board was nothing but a pay-back by LNP for running against Val Schier and taking possible votes away from her which she did. She was totally used by the LNP - Enstch, King, Quick and the whole white shoe brigade. Shame!

Let's get millions of Cairns people on the streets protesting this. Our slogan can be "Save the parasites" "Once on the public teat, always on the public teat".

Billions of onlookers will agree, surely!

Heard King on Mackenzie answering nicely prepared questions. What a gormless, gutless snotty little boogar this King character is. He appears over and over on this Mackenzie's talk back show, spending several hours a week answering what are obviously rehearsed and prepared questions from Mackenzie, yet he won't front up to the people affected by his decisions. Does he understand what a Member of Parliament is? His only connection with the people he is supposed to serve is through this radio program which is really only political propaganda for the government. Proof of how the Mackenzie show is now viewed as a political tool of the Newman Government by the public was seen clearly today when Mackenzie asked for people who had been affected by the sackings to phone the program. No-one did of course.

Will Gavin have the guts to front up for his regular talkback session tomorrow at 11am. Health staff are ready to hammer him if he does.

Ridgiesrule said...

Gavin King must be living in a different Cairns than most of us, if he thinks that it will be easy for those who have lost their jobs to get another one.

How many people apply for every job advertised - bet he is not game enough to tell the truth about this.

Just like the Lying Nasty Party and their media mates don't tell the truth about the fact that FEDERAL health funding has increased but STATE funding has been cut.

Beware people, Abbott will destroy Australia as Newman has done to Queensland if he wins in September.

Tony Hillier said...

Kathy Mac, no-one responded to Cueball's invitation 'cos the only people who listen to his toxic polemics and parroted LNP propaganda are lonely, loony or bitter old right-wingers with nothing better to do with their time, and the odd HBW monitor. I'd be surprised if his daily listenership tops three figures on average.

I thought Gavin King was a main contender for local village idiot but I think he may just have pipped at least for today by Anonymous 19/2/13 13:19

I'd love to see the radio stations business plan - surely it would be more economic to get him a motorised scooter? - he could whizz round, visit each of the listeners for a cuppa, thunder about the lefties, greenies and 'ferals' and drop of some brochures for the advertisers.

Of course he'd have to spend a bit more time with the ones who can't read, but he'd still be home just after lunch. With the free Wi-Fi they won't even need an office, just set up under a tree near the lagoon.

HBW needs to shift its focus away from Mackenzie, who is clearly past it, and now needs to concentrate on exposing the incompetence of our Hillbilly leaders in all 3 levels of government in this region.

Jethro said...

Anonymous 19.50, I beg to differ. I believe HBW does that very well - exposing the incompetence of our representatives.

percentage of sacked staff is minimal. The australian public voted for a change in 2007, you got it, now its time for the real people (not political players) to start fixing the mess.Get back up on your toes queensland stop scuffing your feet

my daughter is in despair. She still has her job, but no manager anymore, no admin officer to do filing, answer phones etc. She is a community nurse and theses are the services that are being decimated. Ok the nurses who walk the wards may keep their jobs, but they WILL notice a difference if the community nurses cannot do their jobs properly, more patients will need to go to hospital. THEN the nurses on the wards will be effected. I cannot understand this debacle.
