Why have they piled so many big buildings into such a small spot? Are we out of land? The site is only 1 hectare.
But then you remember - the Unity Team doesn't give a rat's arse about human amenity. It was Kevin Byrne who talked lovingly about the greenery, the wide expanses, and the wonderful architecture that he found in Singapore.
And then Byrne, along with the now city manager Peter Tabulo, allowed the worst, shitty, soulless buildings to be constructed around the city - DROPPING THEM RIGHT ON THE KERBLINE with no greenery, no nothing. Prison tower apartment buildings.

So we've attempted to squeeze a big theater, a smaller theater, a convention centre expansion, and a 15 story hotel into the site, and fuck the public. And the Town Planning report admits as much, saying that 'the Venue was designed around a compact planning strategy that was independent of site planning considerations'. In other words, Bob Manning came in and said "we're putting these buildings there IRRESPECTIVE of good city planning considerations". Politicians covering their arse and screwing up our city's future.
That's the first thing you notice about this theater plan. So much development in one spot it doesn't even comply with the CRC Master Plan. But that's only part of it.
When you read the plan, you start to realise it has unanswered questions that are in the tens of millions.
• Cost for the Port Authority land
• Cost to move the Port Authority and their employees. . . where? (And demolish their nice Queesland-style building)
• There's virtually no carparks, much less than with the CEP. With a hotel being mooted for this site, where do they park their cars? (The report notes the impossibility of underground parking)
• Manning proposes to build it using a "Public-Private Partnership", and yet the PwC financial analysis concludes 'under no option is the project self-funding on a commercial basis'. What kind of schmoes will advance $100M on a project that doesn't stack up? (Sorry, forgot about all the tunnels. . .)
And then when you put the plan down, you realise the fundamental point.
Under the Manning Plan, each Cairns ratepayer will pay much more than the Schier Council plan. The opposite of what Manning insisted when he and his disUnity Team were running for their jobs!
We've been conned. The "working port" argument was clearly a load of Manning Pies. Knocked back a terrific plan that would have served Cairns into the future, and substituted the pedestrian musings of small-thinking hillbillies. AT A PREMIUM PRICE!
