Racist views are stock-in-trade for our Cairns 4CA talk show host, John "Cueball" MacKenzie. A man who takes everyday events and turns each one into a phony "crisis" in order to gin up a little energy in his mostly geriatric listeners.
And despite the required presence of a "dump" button (and seven second delay) to keep the most vitrolic (and illegal) comments from going to air, it never gets used despite the most eggregious filth coming from local callers.
It's the only place in Australia where you'll here the word "n*****" routinely broadcast. Coming from the mouth of a former Queensland government minister, no less.
MacKenzie's own use of the phrase "n***** in the woodpile" got no comment from the leaders in our community. The use of this same phrase in Sydney this past weekend caused a major kerfuffle in news reports as government employees were called to account for this racial epithet.
This neanderthal broadcaster got Cairns some national attention Monday night, with some of this racist filth featured on the ABC Program "Mediawatch".
The thousands that read this blog everyday know that Cueball MacKenzie routinely allows racist, sexist, misogynist, and other filth to be broadcast on 4CA under the guise of "public affairs" programming. Is this the image of Cairns we want to be sending to the world?
Is this an image that enhances Cairns as a world-class tourist destination?
And he can't duck from the racism by claims he's just allowing people their say - his own views on Asians came from his own mouth.
"OUR lives are precious, we've got to see it that way, we can't fall back to that - - - The situation you see in some Asian countries, obviously human life does not have such a value as we put on it here". . .
Along with the racist views of our Member for Cairns Gavin King, who famously wrote that Chinese are "freaks and weirdos", and women should be responsible for their own rapes, isn't it time this junk be removed from the broadcast airwaves in Cairns? Like any community Cairns has (more than) its share of racists. Unlike any other community in Australia however, we have one of them controlling three hours of radio time every morning who allows this filth oxygen.
It gives all of us at HBW great shame to see our filthy laundry being aired in public across our country.
It's got to stop.
