CAMPBELL NEWMAN AND ASS TOURISM MINISTER GAVIN KING WORKING HARD TO SELL OFF ALL QUEENSLAND'S HIGH-END TOURIST BUSINESS

We can report that Hayman Island resort has been sold to South African hotel and casino magnate Sol Kerzner by Mulpha Australia, who also own the Sydney Intercontinental and Sanctuary Cove, among other  high-end hotel properties.

This is an interesting development in the wake of the Aquis announcements.  Kerzner is a well-known hotel and casino developer, responsible for the gigantic Sun City, South Africa; the Mohegan Sun Indian Casino in Connecticut, United States; and Atlantis Paradise Island, the largest casino in the Caribbean.   And Kerzner was in the running for the gaming licence for the Singapore Marina project.  So another gaming professional is sniffing around Queensland.

Hayman Island now will be closed for several months early in 2014 for a refurbishment.

We also are getting persistent reports that the Sheraton Mirage is about to be sold.  Current gasbag owner David Marriner has presided over the sad dumpification of this once fine resort.  Over two years ago Marriner PR Director Warren Entsch told the community that Marriner's plans "would blow everyone's mind".  The only blown mind would look to be Minister for Bloggers Entsch himself.

EVEN A SHORT GUY LIKE KERZNER CAN
GET BABES BY OWNING CASINOS
With Australians too scared or shortsighted to pull off these kinds of investments, it would seem our LNP "leaders" are selling off the whole shooting match to foreigners.

Privately owned assets being sold off to investors that are interested in spending money in Queensland. Sounds like good business to me. Competition in the owning of gaming licences is also a good thing.

Yeah CC we can't have too many casinos can we. Money in the bank - for somebody. Hope your grandmother has nailed herself down. For sale?

Not being a gambler, I've never worked out what benefit casinos actually provide to society. They seem to do nothing except facilitate the redistribution of wealth from from one group of people (losers) to another group of people (winners) on the basis of 'random luck' - taking a good percentage of the turnover for their efforts. Am I missing something?

Hamish Krint said...

Yep. The state govt. gets a nice cut of all the money outlayed by all the losers.
And, social service agencies have to beg for govt. and private funds to 'repair' all the problems caused by the losers losing....

CairnsCynic said...

Anon 20:47 Seriously! It all comes down to choice. Some people CHOOSE to gamble and others CHOOSE not to. Your statement is just plain ignorant or are you one of those people who sits at the pokies and considers that a "good night out"

Hamish - the social service agencies don't have to beg for money from government - unfortunately it is handed in big handfuls to them. The problem is that THEY don't spend it properly and like any good welfare dependant, they seem to think the solution to the problem is MORE money. It isn't. It is delivery of outcomes that is important but these agencies are so reliant on government handouts that it is not in their financial best interest to help people address their issues. If they did, they would not be able to complain about how hard done by they are!

can anyone give me a reason why Mr Wan King should be given another term , i mean WTF has he done other than cause major pain and grief to young and elderly familys through mass sackings, people are leaving town because of no work while he enjoys his massive pay increase which he has gone silent on not one bit of infrastructure but there sure is heaps of photos and huff & fluff on his fakebook for his groupies to get off on ,this destroyer of Cairns and its lifestyle has to go

The sad thing about you CC is that you seriously believe in what you are saying. So an alcoholic 'chooses' to become one? So a compulsive gambler always 'chooses' to become one? They certainly would have less chances if these 'choices' weren't thrust in their faces daily and deemed acceptable by people like you.

Answer: YES

These people have no strength of character and should fall by the wayside.
The human race will only improve by better selection and breeding.

"The discovery of late Stone Age beer jugs has established the fact that purposely fermented beverages existed at least as early as c. 10,000 BC."

Sure is taking a while to breed out that alcohol flaw. Perhaps you would support a more pro-active eugenics policy anonymous?

Happy Fathers Day to all you gorgeous blokes out there! Be nice.

Anon 8:21 - I do believe what I am saying and have strength in my convictions. I see the results of poor choices every day and YES, people DO CHOOSE how they wish to live their lives - as drunks, leaches on the life blood of society, gamblers or contributors. It is ALL choice.

Personal Responsibility! Ever heard of it? Look it up sometime.

So what made you choose to become an arse-hole, Cairns Cynic ? And how can we prevent you from breeding ?

Not amused said...

CairnsCynic, it isn't always choice. Having a father who suffered dreadfully with post traumatic stress syndrome from his service in WW11, and who turned to alcohol for comfort, addiction isn't so black and white. I don't think my Dad deliberately chose to suffer from PTSD with all its flashbacks, noise intolerance, panic attacks and so on. I don't believe he deliberately chose to suffer from guilt because his mate was killed by a Japanese sniper when the wind blew his hat off and he bent down to pick it up, just as a bullet shattered the face of his mate standing beside him. I don't believe he knew he would end up dependent on alcohol to the extent he did. For the record though, both he and his kids received cruel judgements from people like yourself, you areshole. Oh, none of his children ended up alcoholics, so you don't have to worry that you might be rubbing shoulders with an inferior type of human being.

As world-renowned neurobiologist Bruce Lipton has said, our adult characters are formed from our experiences between the ages of 2 -6 years old (how much do YOU remember these years?) thus if we have had dysfunctional parents for whatever reason, we have 'inherited' those dysfunctions. So, I agree with others, it isn't as black and white as most people would like it to be - we don't always have a 'choice' because our sub-conscious mind dictates 90%+ of our actions, and we actually have little control of our adult behaviour.

There is a nasty hardline emerging amongst a whole generation of neo-conservative wannabes. FaceBook is awash with them. Locally they seem to be 'empowered" by the likes of King. In Cynic's example he mentions drunks and gamblers as leeches (well Cynic can't actually spell, he wrote "leaches" or did you CHOOSE to misspell it ?), but no word about overpaid CEO's and politicians who in many cases are the real leeches on society. And of course those who CHOOSE to profit from the misfortune or weakness of addicts, be it alcoholics, gamblers, drug dependent people (both of legal and illegal drugs) and the list goes on. In Cynic's brave new world many of society's artists, geniuses, scientists, musicians and sages would have been "bred out" through "better selection and breeding" and we would have ended up with the sort of beige ,boring, conformist world to which Cynic apparently aspires.Lucky for most of us, this is not likely to happen.

Hamish Krint, I'm just not so sure about that theory. All of Dad's brothers and sisters were functional and valuable members of society. I would say that poor old Dad needed psychiatric care when he was demobbed, although of course he never received it. Even if he had been given anti- depressants, I believe they would have helped him cope. As it was, the returning soldiers were just told to get on with their lives. Well, many of them could not just get on with their lives. The same as with the Vietnam vets. Their war experiences damaged them in ways we cant imagine. It's all too easy to sit back and judge others. Let me quote Shakespeare -
"HE JESTS AT SCARS WHO NEVER FELT A WOUND". (from Henry V)

Hamish Krint said...

Not amused....AS WELL AS being moulded at a young age to exhibit our adult behaviour WE ALSO deviate from the norm when adults when we are exposed to severe trauma, as in the case of people going to war. In most cases, cruelty is not in our psyche, and when we are forced to commit atrocities, the mind often cannot cope in later years, and post traumatic stress disorder sets in. Mental health for all is sadly ignored by many of our politicians....

Not amused said...

Hamish Krint, I believe war neurosis is more complex than guilt from committing atrocities. It's seeing human bodies blown to pieces, seeing bodies which have been shockingly tortured and dismembered, hearing the deafening sound of continuous shelling for days on end, living in fear of your life day and night for months on end, seeing your mates get killed around you, smelling the stench of death and decomposing bodies. It would be the most traumatic experience of all.

Anonymous said...

Yes Not amused, you're dead right. War is the most traumatising experience of all and most of our Vietnam Vets were only 20 or 21 years old. Many of those turned to alcohol or drugs to help them cope with PTSD. They didn't choose to end up with PTSD.

We send young men off to war and then when they return broken and damaged, the likes of CairnsCynic loftily declare they "have no strength of character". There are times when ignorant arseholes like Cairns Cynic just infuriate me.

I've been reading some intelligent responses and discussion and then you post crap from two right wing whackos who, as usual have nothing to contribute except their hatred for everything but money and power.

I agree Anonymous 11.43. There were some thoughtful, intelligent responses here on alcoholism, drug abuse and PTSD. Every now and then on HBW in amongst the silly and inane posts you do come across comments which are pure gold. It makes reading the blog all the more worthwhile.
