You are correct HBW. There have been enough hints coming from the Newman Government over the past 12 months that something has been secretly negotiated. (Where's the transparency, John Mackenzie????) Yeah. Right. So the LNP don't want the Yorkeys Knob community to have any say. (Where's the community consultation, John Mackenzie?) Yeah. Right. We were seeing Tom Pyne, Kev Byrne and Val Schier since around 1996 to get a new performing arts theatre and a new car park built in Cairns, and YOU, John Mackenzie and YOU, Gavin fuckwit King, had the gall to rant lies about "lack of community consultation". So where is it with this monstrosity? It will change Yorkeys Knob from a laid back beach residential community forever. It will in fact change the nearby beaches as well. So where is the community consultation? Hmm? Cat got your tongue John Mackenzie, or is it some of that DINERO the LNP have slung you??

I'm having a roaring laugh as pollies past and present line up to "take credit" for this project, even before any approvals have been issued (much less requested!)

Why are they building 1,200 apartments and 135 villas on site? How many thousands of people are they expecting to live there? Who are the apartments and villas for? Are we seeing "migration by stealth and cunning" in that we all know casino workers won't be Aussies. Most Aussies don't speak Cantonese or Mandarin so most of the workers at the resort will be Cinese or Asians. Do we have the facilities to cater for several extra thousand permanent residents? The Chinese Government won't allow casinos on the mainland because of the attendant crime industry which accompanies Asian casinos. Do we have the necessary FederalPolice, Interpol, State Police etc to cope with it? How will the development impact on the suburb of Yorkeys Knob? What about the impact on the nearby beaches?
This is a huge development and it will have a huge impact on Cairns and surrounds. There are many questions to be answered. It doesn't surprise me that the LNP Government are undertaking negotiations furtively away from the public. Most definitely Michael Trout would be in the know and has also kept his knowledge quiet from his constituents. For shame!!

How much are the ratepayers of the Cairns Regional Council paying this billionaire to develop his resort, now that Manning has abolished "headworks" charges? How much will our rates escalate to pay for this billionaire and his resort so he can make more billions? Yes we know Manning will be pissing off after one term with his geriatric greedy bunch of Unity Councillors, so how much will we have to pay for this vulgar monument to greed and crime?

Wasn't there a proposal in the 80's for some scheme in this same area which was abandoned because of environmental reasons. I see in the cairns post today that the developer doesn't want to harm the reef in any way (unimaginable to me that it won't cause some direct damage if only because of interference with natural hydrological flows) does that mean he is going to pay carbon offsets for every litre of fuel and electricity used in its construction,by in its inhabitants for life of the project and for the carbon emissions used to access the place by all its patrons. If nothing else kills the reef global warming will. And anything that contributes to global warming contributes to the destruction of the reef.
on another front I guess the daily bugle will be looking forward to boosting its declining advertising revenue via the increase in advertisements by prostitutes.

Anonymous 11.32, there would most certainly be environmental damage to the nearby beaches with dredge soil from the development itself, plus the massive increase in seacraft flitting to and fro the complex. The Chinese resort at Double Island will be sending its guests across to the Casino in hydrafoils, sea taxis and whatever for starters.

The day this gets built will be the day Warrens 4 lane tunnel to Kuranda opens! Sydney and Brisbane are flat out having two casinos. I think it's 'any bright and shiny thing' to distract the locals while the rug gets pulled out from under them, like Bali and Phuket.

Talking to a senior and successful long time Cairns resident (Asian businessman)today, he tells me that this probably won't ever happen, and that we really don't understand Asian mentality and how things work and happen in their world. So don't get too excited everyone. Believe it when you see it!

Tony Fung may be as honest as the day is long, but let's hope he doesn't involve Sheldon Adelson in the project. From Wikipedia:

Adelson has heavily criticized the Obama administration saying "What scares me is the continuation of the socialist-style economy we've been experiencing for almost four years. That scares me because the redistribution of wealth is the path to more socialism, and to more of the government controlling people's lives. What scares me is the lack of accountability that people would prefer to experience, just let the government take care of everything."

Of course people worth billions don't want any redistribution of wealth to those earning the minimum wage. He has been a big donor to the Republicans in the US and no doubt would interfere in Australian politics if he needed to.

Christ or mighty, another neo-liberal fascist, the local LNP will all be slobbering at the chops if this Adelson comes in as partner.
