FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLE OF OPEN JUSTICE SENT PACKING WHEN IT INVOLVES QUEENSLAND MP'S?

Cairns has been awash with rumours about an arrest last week, with our usual gutless local LNP-managed media unwilling to even acknowledge the arrest.  The "media blackout" on the arrest by Constable Russ Parker, the Cairns Police spokesman, has been troubling to several in the QPS, who've provided this information to us.

On or about 30 August the following indictment was laid:

  • One Count of Trafficking in Dangerous Drugs
  • Three Counts of Possession of Dangerous Drugs
  • Three Counts of Possessing paraphernalia related to Pt. 2
  • Two Counts of Producing Dangerous Drugs
  • One Count of Drug manufacturing paraphernalia

The Cairns Post did run a story about cannabis being flown from South Australia via Brisbane to Cairns, with one local man charged.  But the indictment presented in the Supreme Court seems to be from a different incident altogether, a far more serious incident that has apparently been given the spike.

The indicted?  Steven James Trout.  A man with a long criminal history including jail time for drug offences, who's currently under a four year good behaviour bond for his infamous "backhoe" theft in 2009.  A Trout family member routinely seen at the family's Blazing Saddles tourist attraction at Fung's Knob.

Will the Member for Barron River's first boot camp include his own brother?

Well, with Steven James Trout the father of six children and the son of pastoral rancher Peter Trout, it would seem he's a poster boy for boot camp failure.

Given the high level of secrecy surrounding this arrest we continue to await further details from those "inside" the system.  This shouldn't be a factor however - open reporting of court proceedings is a fundamental right in a free democratic society.  It's somehow looking to be subverted in this case.

Mr. Trout of course is entitled to the presumption of innocence, as are all those charged but untried.  A status that often eludes Cueball MacKenzie.

More soon. . . .

Not surprising. We're back in the Joh years of the Moonlight State again. Any ALP or non LNP politician who commits any misdemeanour, however slight, will receive maximum and lengthy media exposure, continuous judgemental comments and abuse from the shock jocks, have their photograph and members of their family splashed across newspapers and on TV. Yet the LNP will cover up their own. Now can you imagine what rugnut would say if this was an ALP member's brother? The corruption has well and truly taken hold in Queensland.

I was tempted to go to the cane burn on Saturday night but was worried I would return to my car and find it not there.

Breaking the law seems to be in the local LNP family DNA. Drink driving, spousal real estate misbehaviour, front end loader misappropriation and now this. Real role models to the Cairns community.

Holy shit hey? Well, well well. Christ or mighty if it was an ALP members brother or second cousin six times removed we all know the local media would be falling over themselves, shooting their bolts in their hurry to get it splashed across the front page and making it lead stories on TV. Old rugnut would be ranting away and frothing at the mouth for months. They're a corrupt bunch the local LNP. You ain't seen nothing yet, that I can guarantee you. My advice to the local coppers who are honest and on the level is to watch your backs.

Why the hell cover something like this up? Haven't the LNP ever heard of the saying, (which goes back to the Bible), "You are not your brother's keeper." Most reasonable people understand that in every family there is either a skeleton in the closet or a black sheep somewhere. Drug and alcohol addiction is unfortunately not unusual in the community we live in. Bob Hawke's daughter was an addict at one stage, causing old Bob to shed tears on national television. Bob's honesty and obvious distress over his daughter earned him sympathy and respect rather than criticism and revulsion. As I said, I can't understand why go to such lengths to cover this up.

"Trouty" was proudly announcing on 4 CA today that the removal of "problem" crocodiles on the Northern beaches would commence in October. There was no mention of the removal of human predators, drug manufacturers or drug dealers.

Scares the living shit out of you doesn't it as to what will happen if the triads move in with the AQUIS resort. If a local LNP member is so corrupt as to cover up his brothers criminal misdemeanours, what the hell else can he do? Seems to me as if the LNP are doing all they can to put out the welcome mat for the worlds worst criminal underworld. Come in boys, we have a political party here which do deals in secret with Hong Kong billionaires, and who shit all over the public, we've got a watered down Criminal Misdemeanour Commission and we've taken layers of supervision away from the police force. No boys there aren't as many coppers here watching over each other any more. It's open slather, the doors are open wide, come right on in. The police force is ripe and ready for corruption. Oh and we have a media machine which will do as the LNP tell it to do. Then you have a local population of morons who all think they are going to make themselves a fortune out of rising real estate because of the AQUIS resort. It's all here. Corrupt politicians, a weakened police force with inadequate mechanisms to counter vice and corruption, and a local population of fools.

Anonymous said...

What do you expect when the MP in question himself took out a lease (with an option to buy) on a property that is about to be consumed by the AQUIS project....BEFORE the project was announced of course.....

Bob R. said...

And another ex LNP politician gets the commission on selling the Hong Kong billionaire the land on which to build his AQUIS min-city. Oh and a group of LNP men who deliberately scuttled local ownership of an Entertainment Precinct while hiding their knowledge of the AQUIS proposal. What else will they hide? Jethro has made a bloody good point above. We are wide wide open for triads to arrive and set up shop here.

Its all very simple Alison above. The LNP believe they are very special human beings and not the ordinary garden variety of COMMON people. They can't have alcoholics, drug addicts or woman bashers and the local media machine agrees with them. Stench's drink driving case wasn't going to be reported until HBW raised it in here first. Ditto, Trout's brothers case. Now it has been aired on HBW, maybe the local media will be forced to publish something.

While it certainly seems odd it didn't get more media coverage, suggesting a local media cover up while linking to a local media story about the guy's misdeeds last September seems a bit odd too. What are you suggesting changed between then and now?

Anonymous said...

Whatever happened to transparency hey? Oh that's right, its the House of Slitherin, the LNP. They don't believe in open transparent government.

A strengthening of the cosy relationship between the LNP and the Murdoch media machine Anonymous 20.26. Obviously some deal is in place by directive from Murdoch that nothing negative is to be written about the LNP or anyone/anything connected to LNP members. That's my hunch anyway.

Anonymous said...

Is that why the local rag is so thin nowadays, Seth ? If you can't write anthing negative about the LNP, there isn't much left...

I mean Christ or mighty the fucken paper cant even write a well researched opinion piece about this bloody Hong Kong zillionaires resort listing all the pros and cons. Its gone downhill fast as a paper and I bet its losing money fast as well. No fucken wonder Murdoch wants his hands on the NBN, the SBS and ABC.

Agreed jim-bob. Didn't Gavin King have it easy on the Post hey writing his poisonous columns week after week attacking Schier firstly then all the other Labor members. What a cushy bludge he had, being paid to write abuse while promoting himself at the same time for another well paid bludge. How he and old Nanny Mackenzie must have laughed when they tried to get Val Schier to pay cash for comment when King himself was given an open door on the shit talk-back program just so he could get free election advertising for himself.

ever mind, King and Entsch were on Mackenzie's shit show this morning boasting about how they have resolved a lot of the crime in the CBD. Nothing said about drug dealers.

Michael Trout spent a lot of today handing out how to vote cards at the Showgrounds for Wazza. Mustn't be much happening in Barron River.

Hillbilly please confirm Steven James Trout is the offender; I'm advised he's currently in jail

Labor are just as guilty of this kind of behaviour. Anybody heard of Icac enquiry in NSW. Gordon Nuttall ring a bell. I encourage going after corrupt politicians but don't pretend it's only one side of politics. Trout and that land at Yorkeys sure smells fishy.

Gee whizz Hillbilly - I must say I'm somewhat disappointed that you've chosen to slag me off in the opening paragraph of this piece without knowing a few pertinent facts. Disappointed, but not entirely surprised I guess. Hopefully you'll allow me the courtesy of a reply.

Firstly, The daily media releases I prepare are a just a brief snapshot of the day to day activities of the many different stations, units, sections and squads that comprise the Far Northern Police District. Not every arrest or charge is included on the daily release. It would be impossible for that to occur for a a multitude of reasons.

I find your statement that the omission of this particular incident from one of my media releases "has been troubling to several in the QPS, who've provided this information to us", particularly amusing. The information regarding this particular case was contained in a document reserved for items of a significant nature. These documents carry a clear instruction as the whether or not the information can be released to media. In this case, and I've double checked just in the event that I may have erred originally, the report is clearly marked 'Not for media release'. This is not at all unusual for significant events as often, and I believe this was the case with this report, they are the subject of an ongoing investigation or operation and media coverage can be counter-productive to say the very least.

Perhaps you might like to point this out to those supposed "several in the QPS, who've provided this information" so they can look it up for themselves.

Secondly, I'm not a member of any political party, and in fact have been somewhat of a swinging voter all my life. I really don't get too excited about politics in general.

No doubt there will be plenty who will pick this response to pieces and that's fair enough - are we not indeed fortunate to live in a democracy and enjoy free speech!

Oh, and just to clarify your opening sentence; This incident allegedly occurred several months ago - not last week.

Best regards,

Russ Parker

Good to hear from our lovely Mr Plod but it still begs the question "Why was this incident report marked NOT FOR MEDIA RELEASE?" surely it was an item of public interest -apart from the fact that a local politician's close family member was involved I can't understand why it was not reported in our local paper.

Anonymous said...

Maybe it was marked "not for media" as it was an ongoing investigation and there were more people involved and the police simply wished to remove as many of the dirtbags as possible.

How about next time you get pulled over for a RBT we get QPS to produce a list of everyone stopped - irrespective of the outcome? I wonder how the average joe would like that?

Well spoken Russ Parker and good on ya HBW for publishing Russ' response. What we need in Cairns is more 2 way communication and less sledging.

Great to see you publish the police response Hillbilly. Thank you Russ Parker too.

Russ Parker may well be right in this case, even though his own words indicate he was not privy to the decision on keeping the matter under wraps. And it may well be true that ongoing investigations warrant secrecy, but the fact that indictments have been laid suggest that there is a strong case already and any other people involved would be well aware of it.

Russ Parker's real problem is not that we suspect him personally of bias. The problem is that we can see a long term pattern which stretches back to the corruption of the Bjelke-Petersen era, the political support given to the LNP by the police union then and now, and more recently the sacking of Dr Alex Douglas MP from the State parliamentary ethics committee, the reduction in powers of the Crime and Misconduct Commission and the ongoing bias of the Murdoch media which dominates Queensland.

Secrecy and discretion may be necessary in some instances, but unless handled very carefully can be used to hide bias and corruption.

As far a media bias is concerned, it's all too obvious in the current election campaign. And as someone pointed out in this column recently, a DUI involving a Labor member was splashed all over the Cairns Post some years ago, but Entsch's case went unreported until raised by HBW.

Secrecy can also be a concern issue when it is used to protect the party in power. The LNP has form here, on many issues, with the latest being their announced intention to suppress information on refugee boat arrivals.

Russ, I think you're an honest man, but you need to accept that there is a credibility problem as many people see too many links between the LNP, the media and at least some of the police. As a result people may shout 'fire' even when it's only smoke, because there's too much smoke about, and it's not just from Trout's cane burn.

The link between the 80s' National Party's hierarchy and an equally corrupt Queensland Police administration during the "Brown Paper Bag"/"Don't You Worry About That" days of Bjelke-Petersen and his henchmen Hinze, Tenni et al and police commissioner Lewis and his bent cops, is still fresh in mind, even 30 years on!
