This order by the Federal Government will further increase the cost of Cairns harbour dredging. For Gladstone, which has little tourism and a government desperate to export more and more coal from there, the added cost to dump the spoils on land will likely be a necessary cost to pay.
We would however guess that this will kill the Cairns Trinity Inlet plan altogether. The affects of ocean dumping of spoil is known to kill sea grasses along with the turtle and dugong in these habitat, as well as smothering coral even long distances from the dredge dumping.
