MACKENZIE HILLBILLY CHOICES REJECTED IN MAREEBA & DOUGLAS SHIRE ELECTIONS

Cairns' hillbilly leader and radio charlatan John "Cueball" MacKenzie wouldn't survive if the Australian Communications and Media Authority actually did any real enforcement of Equal Time provisions of the law.

MacKenzie has long abused the Cairns electorate by selecting a candidate (whether by honest evaluation (cough, cough) or financial machinations) and then promoting only THAT candidate in the election.

This was true in this weekend's de-amalgamation votes, with MacKenzie supporting Mick Borzi in Mareeba against Tom Gilmore, and launching virulent attacks against Julia Leu and supporting George Pitt.

Leu has been elected in a walkover of her challengers.

While too close to call after counting tonight, Borzi looks to be going down to Gilmore.

That's hillbillies - 0, progressive government - 2.

Under changes in the Broadcasting Services Act (2013), candidates are entitled to demand "equal time" during an election period.  HBW has polled most of the candidates, and it would seem none of the candidates availed themselves of this new legal requirement.  Tony Abbott used this new law to his advantage during the federal election, and in fact demanding it be applied when Julia Gillard first announced the date of the election early.

We've been encouraging prospective candidates in both the Cairns (non)Regional Council elections and the next State Elections to avail themselves of this provision to "blunt" the 19th century hillbilly voice on 4CA.

We're especially pleased that Borzi has been defeated in Mareeba.  Borzi's management skills and history of alleged bullying were recently exposed in the book "HINDSIGHT", written by former Cairns Harbour Board Chief Engineer Dennis Debney.

The book is available in the Apple iTunes bookstore.

HINDSIGHT

Mareeba residents need competent management that looks forward, and were at risk of stagnation and the hands of hillbilly powerhouse Borzi.

We plan a review of "HINDSIGHT" soon.

great news ! Pearl will be spitting chips again. Will she now finally come good on her "threat" and move "South" ? Will we now no longer have to listen to Borzi's endless self-promotion ?

Congratulations Julia Leu! Julia is one of the few Councillors who always puts the community first, and Port Douglas residents will be in good hands.

However, her win in Port Douglas will be a loss for the people of the Cairns Northern Beaches, whom Julia has represented remarkably well over the years.

Under the de-amalgamation, the remainder of the old Division 10 now merges with Division 9. I find this unacceptable. The people of the Cairns northern beaches (formerly part of Division 10) had no vote in the de-amalgamation, yet we are now stuck for 3 years with an invisible used car salesman unity team handraiser that nobody voted for. Apparently, in our democracy, this is regarded as fair.

Blame Peter Beattie.

If he hadn't pushed this amalgamation nonsense on an unwilling electorate then the subsequent events would not have happened.

Congratulations to Julia Leu, who thoroughly deserves her victory in the Douglas Shire mayoral election. She will be a worthy successor to Mike Berwick. Her intelligence, integrity and expertise will be sorely missed in Cairns. Scarily, Cr Leu's departure will leave Cr Rob Pyne as the only dissenting, discerning voice on the LNP stacked Cairns Regional Council. God help us all!

Who is the Division 9 Councillor? The only Councillors we ever hear from are Pyne, Leu, Bates and occasionally Terry James. Who the fuck is he or she in Division 9?

Julia should have been Val Schier's deputy Mayor from the beginning. All that back stabbing and back flipping by Cochrane would not have occurred. At last the far north has a worthy reliable, educated, experienced Leader. Well done Julia - you deserve being Mayor of such a beautiful Australian destination. Borzi just needs to join Sleepy Vampire looking Manning in a retirement village somewhere.

Lets not forget that HBW was opposed to people in Douglas getting de-amalgamated. Lets also remember that this is the result of an election promise by the LNP. The people who worked very hard to get to where Douglas is now (including Julia Leu, who looks to have won 60% of the vote)also need congratulating. It seems David Carey has been elected councillor and his knowledge of Council finances will be critical over the next two years.

There were sound reasons for the amalgamation, as we shall all see in the near future. Time is the best truth teller of all.

Mackenzie's influence is on the wane. His LNP only speakers on his program has been noted by the community, especially since Newman is increasingly on the nose in the electorates. The old saying has come to play, "You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people, all of the time." Dunno what Mackenzie's advertisers think, but his audience continues to shrink because his talk-back show is now seen more and more by the community as an LNP political program.

McKenzie chose to completely ignore the issue today. What a loser. Instead we got the same old brain dead rednecks waffling on about the same old shit.

Yep NYM, the reasons where that Bligh had found a way to reduce costs by reducing people's representation. The majority of constituents did not want amalgamation, and made their views heard at the next poll. It is called democracy (or our shaky version of it anyway)

Pearl is apparently moving to the Gold Coast. Bye bye Pearl !

Not a Mareeba resident, but so relieved to see that bloody old fossil Borzi fail. That should now be the end of his 'public life' … a contribution which benefitted him a great deal more than the community her 'served'.

Anonymous, 11.09, amalgamation was a cost cutting measure. Some of the smaller Councils were heavily into debt with no way of reducing their debts. Is this what you wanted?

NYM Douglas was financially secure, until it was raped and pillaged by Cairns. That I am quite sure of. Generally speaking I would rather pay a bit more for local representation than see Government centralized. Otherwise the regions will get even less than they do now. Seems I was not the only one who thought that....

It is well understood that pearl wants to have mackenzies baby but she would be furious that no one listened to her or her bald headed idol and voted for who they demanded.the end.

Mackenzies popularity is certainly nose-diving amongst the electorate, commensurate with the growing disgust with Newman. These anti-biker laws aren't going down well at all especially amongst the red necked illiterates who would normally be moved into raptures of idolatry at dictatorial controls. Even they seem to understand at some primordial level in their tiny rat brains that the legislation is fascist. Keep on going Mackenzie. As Newman sinks, so do you and good bloody riddance!

Anonymous 18:27, you have been misinformed. How much infrastructure will be built in Douglas now it has a ratepayer base of what? 10,000 people? How long before it is in the same mess it was before amalgamation?

Mind you, I wouldn't mind my region being able to divorce from this current Cairns Council mob ...

Get your facts straight Ginger the Red-Heeler. Douglas was financially viable according to Qld Treasury before amalgamation. The "Douglas was broke" furphy was promulgated by people with personal agendas which were uncovered in the lead-up to the de-amalgamation poll. Ironically, a couple of the new Councillors - one sacked from the former Douglas Shire Council by the CMC - the other campaigned against de-amalgamation -are now councillors-elect!! Their hypocrisy is breathtaking but reflects the general apathy and ignorance of many in the community who couldn't give a rat's about who represents them and whinge about having to vote at all. Appropos the last point, millions of people around the world have given up their lives and/or continue to fight for this privilege.
