ARTISTS SHUN DILAPIDATED CIVIC THEATER AS REPLACEMENT PROMISE FADES - CAIRNS LEADERS SIGN ON TO INCREASED ILLEGAL DRUG PLAN

In a cruel irony apparently lost on Cairns Post editors, the Saturday edition featured two stories on sport in Cairns.

The first a "leak" that various leadership bodies are going to announce a Cairns "Sport Industry Development Program".  Which of course requires the almost $30M reconstruction of the Tobruk Pool that No One Uses.  Along with what, $60M or so for a "rectangular stadium"?

This is supposedly backed up by a "Long list of top line sport events hitting Cairns in 2014" - who are apparently prepared to hit it, with or without almost $100M out of the ratepayer's purse.  So why are we spending this money again?

And just one page later, we discover that 11 have been charged in raids around Edmonton and Gordonvale (the hub of Cairns sport culture).  These crims are engaged in widespread property theft to support their drug habits.

Cocaine?  Heroin?  Nope.

Their drug of choice - steroids and other illegal sport drugs!

In fact, the QPS Far North Drug Squad have made over 370 seizures of these illegal sport drugs in 2013, an increase of more than triple from 2012.

The policies to push Cairns as a sporting destination by Bob "Sleepy" Manning and Minister for Blogs Warren Entsch have turned Cairns into the sport drug capital of Australia!

One of the leaders of the sport push is Kevin Maher, who apparently has something to do with cricket.  (Is that even a sport anymore?)  Maher's argument for Cairns as an Olympic training destination?  "It's on the same latitude as Rio de Janeiro", the host of the next Olympics.  Well he missed it by over 1,000km but hell, I get this shit confused, too.  You must have meant LONGITUDE, right Kevvy?   Too many spinner head shots, I reckon.

Meanwhile, use of the Cairns Civic Theater has crashed to the lowest level - EVER - in the history of Cairns theater.  Only 16 nights of entertainment are booked at the Civic Theater.  Booking agents are shunning the run-down theater, it's been confirmed.  This in turn has slashed the income from the theater normally provided to the Cairns nonRegional Council.

Small-thinker Manning is also behind the "Chinese-ifacation" of Grafton Street.  As Chinese visitors have laughed and noted, Council has even gotten the shade of red paint wrong.  Every Chinese grows up knowing what their Imperial Red colour looks like.  This ain't it.

We look forward to the increased drug use by Cairns youth as a known result to their "Sport Industry Development Program".  We should be seeing the first freakshow-sized netball girls any day now.

couldnt agree more, just watch the drug related crime soar as we upgrade sports facilities.

I was under the impression that the Grafton Street Chinese memorial thing was a Val Schier initiative?

All the best ideas came from Val, including that offer to Julia of a lift home...good dog Ginger!

Ginger TheRedHeeler what weed are you smoking? Grafton Street re-development is a King thing. King may have to worked Manning over to get Council on side but it's a King Thing.

I for onecannot support spending $millions on a rectangular stadium. Unfortunately Cairns Eytes don't support attending sporting events. We had 2 Test Matches in Cairns and Cricket Australia won't be back becasue we didn't turn up. We didn't support this opportunjity for Cairns. The crowds we get at Rugby League Games are appauling. WE have rectangular stadiums owned by Brothers, Ivanhoes Suburbs Yarrabah Gordonvale and Kangaroos(i'm not sure that Kangaroos still own their ground)and you could fire a shotgun and no one would get hut whenever there is a game there!! If we are going to spend money then lets give it to one of the existing Stadiums as they all need help to survive. If we build the Stadium then we will be responsible for paying for it. The football stadium in Townsville is owned by the Queensland Government and they carry the losses on this ground. Why should we allow our CRC to saddle us up with a debt filled stadium that will never be profitable?

This thing about the rectangular stadium keeps on being pulled out over and over and rehashed. Warren Entsch threw it into the LNP confected stoush over the Entertainment Precinct as a carrot to get elected in 2010. A flurry of letters into The Cairns Post following Stench's announcement saw the rednecks of Cairns straining at the bit and creaming their jeans over it. I thought Fung was going to build the 25,000 seat stadium anyway out at Aquis. As for the Civic Theatre, I dare say Manning will come out again soon and repeat the same ole same ole bullshit about "fast tracking" a new performing arts theatre or "going into partnerships with a private investor". Once again, I thought Aquis was going to have two performing art theatres on its premises.

Red Healer, the Grafton Street thing was a Shier Council initiative, but since King and Manning publicly claimed credit for it, they should also be held responsible for its (modified) implementation.

The dilapidated Civic Theatre stands as a sad memorial to what has been lost to Cairns through the arrant stupidity of Mayor Manning and his stooges, the toxicity of Cueball MacKenzie and his dwindling coterie and the self-serving conservative MPs and councillors who purport to represent their constituents. But for them, the Entertainment Precinct would by now be well on its way and Cairns' future would be a good deal brighter, almost certainly free of the monstrous and divisive Aquis proposal, which so far has only succeeded in polarising local opinion.

Oh shit yeah. Just keep on keep on bringing it up again and again. The Cairns Post have he story on the rectangular stadium in their files and just keep on word processing it, ditto the new performing arts theatre. Just keep on spruiking the same ole same ole bullshit, year after year after year and everyone will be happy. Yes, they will walk around saying, "Oh at least something is being done." Within a few days they would have forgotten.

Off subject maybe, but does anyone know what I have seen being sprayed over Cairns? They are NOT contrails as I have never seen a triangle or a square contrail,I have been watching these planes for months. Also why is the Sun setting so far South/West, if you don't know - don't show your ignorance by insulting me

Doesn't the Aquis development contain both a huge rectangular stadium and two performing arts theatres? What the hell is going on? There is so much conflicting information coming and going, and every now and then Manning pops up and says he is going to "fast track" a new theatre or "gunna do this" or "gunna do that". About all his Council have done is to start redeveloping the CBD and that wouldn't have happened without Anna Bligh and Julia Gillard agreeing to Cairns being the host of the G20 Finance conference next year.

Google "contrails" "chemtrails" and you will see that this is part of a huge conspiracy theory about govts poisoning things. So anon 13.32 don't insult our intelligence by subscribing to this bullshit -there is enough going on in this town without this sort of mumbo-jumbo crap!

Further investigation into the politics behind the departure of the previous manager at Civic and subsequent appointment may bear some illuminating fruit ......

I think you'll find what is being sprayed over Cairns at the moment is excrement of the bovine kind

Alison Alloway said...

I'm in complete agreement with you Anonymous 05.47. Cairns is like a rudderless ship going round and round in circles with its so called "leaders" playing the game of "being seen to be doing something" by monopolising Nanny Mackenzie's radio show and a compliant Cairns Post. Admidst flattering commentary from old Nanny who strokes their inflated egos every five minutes, they give long winded bullshitting accounts of what they want us to believe they are going to do. Because old Nanny lovingly censors criticism from the public, nobody can get on air to challenge their bullshit, lies and deceit and give these incompetent, self-serving, lying scoundrels a well deserved kick up the arse. Hence we are still waiting for the new performing arts theatre and have been now since 1996. An entire generation of people have grown up in the region waiting for a new theatre. We don't know whether Fung is going to include one in his Aquis mini-city or not. Trying to find out only invites abuse from the LNP so called leaders. It doesn't surprise me that bookings for the Civic Theatre are well down, even though "Phantom of the Opera" will be staged there. Performers have told me how inadequate and unsafe the theatre is.

Present-day Cairns is chock-a-block with bogans who are not the slightest bit interested in community issues or values beyond their own front yards. Australian meedya both reflects and fuels the shallow nature of modern society.

Hey Mumbo-Jumbo 27/12 17:55. So you don't know either, lol. I just asked a question, I am not subscribing to anything, only what I saw myself.Your intelligence doesn't need insulting - you don't have any. And if Cairns is so full of BS, it's narrow minded people like you Mumbo Jumbo dribbling crap, that is confirmed by your STUPID answer. Go and have another drink you stupid troll, have another go when your sober. lol

Anonymous said...

So 13:32 are you going to tell us your theory? We all know you want to.

Ginger TheRedHeeler said...

I think I really will cry if we ratepayers have to fund another bloody sports field because apparently rugby players (or audience) gets confused when the game is played on a rectangle surrounded by a running track while we still do not have a cent to be spent on any kind of culture or entertainment which does not involve sport.

15:01.My theory is you are still not sober, lol, and when you say WE, does that mean you and your voices or are you the Queen? My opinion is you are ... just another one of the SHEEPLE, Baaa. Why bother answering if you don't know,dumb-ass,and if I knew I wouldn't have to put up with idiots like you to find out.

So hillbilly do you post comments from loopy whackjobs to encourage intelligent debate or as an indication of what we are up against?

Deedee said...

Well said there Alison. My thoughts exactly. I would question your description of Mackenzie as "Nanny" however. It seems to me as if he has a contract for Government Media Officer in FNQ. He now advertises his talk back program as going "direct" to Parliament House where "they listen to what is being said here." Now isn't that enough proof that he is on the taxpayers payroll? He no longer provides a voice for the community but a voice for the LNP government. I wonder how much he is being paid. Just looking at the LNP's VLAD Legislation and their plans for a Star Chamber gives me the shivers. You can hear the stamp of jackbooted gestapo marching louder and louder in Queensland. There are already men in prison in Queensland who are being kept in solitary confinement, unable to change their clothes or have a bath. It is indicative of the LNP as a political party and as human beings that they approve of treating people this way. It gives one an idea of how they will treat others they disapprove of, doesn't it? I greatly fear the LNP will go further particularly with the establishment of the neo-Nazi Star Chamber.

Bob R. said...

We have veered off track Deedee above with mention of VLAD and the Star Chamber. Seems to happen a lot on this site. Herr Newmans antics have attracted a lot of criticism not only from the ALP but also from the likes of **GASP** ultra right winger Larry Pickering. Refusing to let people bath and changing clothes is a health risk, ditto leaving people in isolation for long periods of time. Frankly it is cruel and inhumane treatment which we wouldn't do to an animal let alone a human being. I reckon the LNP are just using the "bikies" as a test run, to see how the community reacts and what opposition there is out there. Their real target is the trade unionists.
