In a cruel irony apparently lost on Cairns Post editors, the Saturday edition featured two stories on sport in Cairns.
The first a "leak" that various leadership bodies are going to announce a Cairns "Sport Industry Development Program". Which of course requires the almost $30M reconstruction of the Tobruk Pool that No One Uses. Along with what, $60M or so for a "rectangular stadium"?
This is supposedly backed up by a "Long list of top line sport events hitting Cairns in 2014" - who are apparently prepared to hit it, with or without almost $100M out of the ratepayer's purse. So why are we spending this money again?
And just one page later, we discover that 11 have been charged in raids around Edmonton and Gordonvale (the hub of Cairns sport culture). These crims are engaged in widespread property theft to support their drug habits.
Cocaine? Heroin? Nope.
Their drug of choice - steroids and other illegal sport drugs!
In fact, the QPS Far North Drug Squad have made over 370 seizures of these illegal sport drugs in 2013, an increase of more than triple from 2012.
The policies to push Cairns as a sporting destination by Bob "Sleepy" Manning and Minister for Blogs Warren Entsch have turned Cairns into the sport drug capital of Australia!
One of the leaders of the sport push is Kevin Maher, who apparently has something to do with cricket. (Is that even a sport anymore?) Maher's argument for Cairns as an Olympic training destination? "It's on the same latitude as Rio de Janeiro", the host of the next Olympics. Well he missed it by over 1,000km but hell, I get this shit confused, too. You must have meant LONGITUDE, right Kevvy? Too many spinner head shots, I reckon.
Meanwhile, use of the Cairns Civic Theater has crashed to the lowest level - EVER - in the history of Cairns theater. Only 16 nights of entertainment are booked at the Civic Theater. Booking agents are shunning the run-down theater, it's been confirmed. This in turn has slashed the income from the theater normally provided to the Cairns nonRegional Council.
Small-thinker Manning is also behind the "Chinese-ifacation" of Grafton Street. As Chinese visitors have laughed and noted, Council has even gotten the shade of red paint wrong. Every Chinese grows up knowing what their Imperial Red colour looks like. This ain't it.
We look forward to the increased drug use by Cairns youth as a known result to their "Sport Industry Development Program". We should be seeing the first freakshow-sized netball girls any day now.
