IS THERE REALLY NO AUSTRALIAN NEWS ANYMORE?

While we've singled out News Ltd. for this issue today, the fact is that all of the news media has apparently decided "foreign" stories are more interesting than anything going on here.

We've got bikies being arrested for just being bikies, we've got Joh Bjelke Newmans's trashing our personal freedoms, we've got a local MP who's squiring a large-breasted woman not his wife around town on the down-low, and this is the best News.com.au can do today?

All the circled stories - mostly American, one British, one about a Brit and a Kiwi, and the apparently "Required by Law" story on the Kardashians.

The news media is in free-fall, and it has little to do with the internet. . . .

Indeed, most of the mainstream media should cringe in shame when reviewing their content. But some blogs could sharpen their acts too. For instance, whenever I click on Hillbilly, I cringe at your very rude and inaccurate description 'Gavin "Don't Rape me" King'. Pot calling kettle black? Not that I'm a GK fan either ....

This is what happens when you move to an online free media. No money for journalists and content ends up coming from a global or national source.

Gavin King himself is responsible for most of the descriptions a lot of the general public give him. We the public read and were turned off by the description he gave of the average chinese as "slant eyed weirdos" or something to that effect. His slant on why women get raped sometimes reflected his poor and simplistic journalistic skills but that is expected from a small regional news paper. Someone said recently that in the past a government would set the agenda and the general public would debate it. Good or bad, except or reject the idea at the polling booth. Today, in 2014 and in past recent years so called journalists, hate and biased filled talk back radio and foreign owned Australia media set the agenda, the listeners and readers who don't know better and are to lazy to get the facts fall in behind. Government opposition parties know this and use it to their advantage. In the end a large percentage of the population vote who they are told to vote for, go along with trends demanded by the media and skip along through life without thinking for themselves.

Not surprising, they have been distracting us with this sort of crap for years, and there will be plenty more of it when Abbott hands the ABC over to Rupert Murdoch. We are being "Mushroomed" kept in the dark and fed on bullshit.

Once the ABC and SBS are in the hands of Murdoch, it will be the end of investigatory journalism, the type of in depth reportage which saw the exposure of live export, 4 Corners's "Moonlight State" etc. Instead we will just see more of the drivel and garbage of "reality" shows, second rate American so called comedys and an inundation of commercial advertising. I have recently been looking at FOXTEL for the first time, and am just shocked that people actually pay for such fucken drivel. Oh, I also predict that once Murdoch has his greedy money obsessed hands on the ABC and SBS it will signal the end of free to air television.

Ive pricked up my ears there HBW. Which MP is this squiring a large breasted woman, not his wife, around town? Well I do know one fellow who once had this female partner change her for his previous partner and back again. Well I think that is what is going on. Then there was this snigger about some fellow who had a few little rendezvous with a local television newsreader.

Hey people, you have CHOICES! No one is asking you to buy Murdoch papers, or read the Murdoch stuff online, or watch Murdoch TV.
Maybe that's the strength of social media, like Facebook, where hopefully each of us can report events as they happen, in a truthful way...or is it inevitable that we will put our own (biased) spin on it too?

Over a year ago my wife was watching a national news program at 6pm. For the first 15 minutes the female news reader reported on a famous football star and his latest indiscretions. The news reader spoke to sports psychologists, trainers,a taxi driver(why, why) some youngish blond girl who was an expert on everything but by the look of her needed minute by minute instructions when to breath in and out and club managers. She went to a break and came back and continued the 15 minutes of a 30 minute news program with an insight into drugs in sport, what the football player had for dinner the night before(made that bit up) Finally at 15 minutes past 6 she went to another ad. Came back. Story number two. By the way she breathlessly told us through so much make up they must have applied it with a spatula, two Australian soldiers died in Afganistan this morning. That was when I sort help from my wife as my head was bleeding from banging it against a brick wall and I gave up commercial TV and radio and got the real news from ABC and read more books.

You're right, Bob R. ABC TV have some important current affairs programming ... Four Corners, Q&A, 7:30 and Lateline, among them ... without which we would all be poorer. But, in the realm of light entertainment, our national broadcaster imports far too many soppy, second-rate series from the British TV channels, and way too many programs hosted by Stephen Fry (even, though, he's an undeniably clever bastard). If Aunty continues imitating commercial stations, throwing inane catchlines at us every five minutes, such as their latest banality 'Gotta love your ABC', they will lose this viewer's support. Gotta say, though, I wouldn't miss 'Rake' for quids. It leaves the US and UK lawyer shows for dead!

The sky has just fallen in! The CP has an article CRITICAL of the PM! Apparently TA wants a bigger/better flying machine to carry him in comfort around the world -can you even start to imagine the vitriol that Julia would have copped if this happened on her watch? and yes I know the contract is about to expire on the current fleet, but really!!!!

Well at least the Cairns Post has one Australian article "The sky is the limit for the luxury appointments aboard a new fleet of VIP jets for Australia's politicians". However, given the Budget Emergency it and the linked article from The Australian must surely be spoofs.

Budget emergency? Oh that's right, electioneering drivel all made up to scare the beejesus out of the voters.

Gotta agree with Hamish on this one, you don't have to read this crap, and I don't. My wife buys Thursday's CP for the TV guide and even that riles me; there's a better user-friendly Cairns guide on-line FREE. Don't listen to 4CA either. And that's the point; every time you buy, or listen to a NewsLtd media business, or McKenzie on 4CA, you give them oxygen; that little bit of support and comfort. I prefer to leave them to preach to their converted; their little band of ever-diminishing true-believers. The CP and 4CA are both subject to market economics and as their little band of neanderthals diminish, so will they.

I suspect more and more of us are leaving the mainstream media and searching out news sources online. The Cairns Post has degenerated badly since it relocated to Townsville.

Hamish. If you don't read , or listen to these people and then protest, they assume that you support them as part of their so-called "silent majority". At my workplace I listen to racist and conspritist bullshit in the tea room and I have literallty stood up and asked them to put up or shut up. Works a treat. Never seen so many wide eyes and open mouths!Too many times I hear opinion as fact. Much like commercial radio

Well at least we make news overseas.

Australian state of Queensland adopts populist, hard-line laws 'reminiscent of Soviet Russia and Hitler’s Germany'

We do have "news" at the moment with Australians being fired up and incensed with the extreme views of one Corey Bernardi the LNP Senator from SA. So, in weighs Warren Entsch "outraged" at Bernardi's anti-gay comments which duly impresses many people. Yet Entsch doesn't express his "outrage" over Bernardi's views on single mothers, does he? I wonder why? Could it be that Tony Abbott told his pregnant girlfriend at uni to "piss off" and she was "on her own"? What about Bernardi's views on abortion? Why hasn't Entsch attacked those? You really have to wonder why some politicians are more sensitive to the rights of gays than they are to the rights of women.

Last Sunday evening ABC24 approx. 6.45 Laurie Oaks gave a speech at the Olle Awards, I have been trying to access it as I missed the beginning, maybe someone could comment on how to find it, he said very well what the modern day media has become especially the Murdoch crap, everybody should see this, maybe HBW could show the footage, many thanks if possible.

To Bazza above, I found a transcript of LO's speach at the Ollies 2011. I am not sure its what you saw but on reading it it fits your description.

Recently my mother took a trip down to the rest of Australia. On her return she brought me a copy of the weekend Age and the The Australian. I expected thereto be a difference, but not such a HUGE difference. She had been an avid WE Oz reader for years, but when George Megalogenis and a few others left last year she couldn't stand to purchase the WE Oz anymore.
I subscribe to 'Crikey' online, and she subscribes to 'The Conversation'. There is some real quality journalism in these online media outlets. Yes it cost, bugger all really, but atleast we get real news and real opinion.
My greatest fear is that the current govt will do Murdochs' bidding and break up the ABC which David Hill and Mark Scott have done wonders at engineering a very robust service to all Australians. Not everyone will like everything, but there is more than enough non US garbage, quality programming, as well as the excellent 'I View' platform.
There are also many alternative media (free) Facebook/blog/online services that have quality and credibility in their journalism and their non mainstream viewpoints.
One just has to want to look to find them.
