SUPPORT OF CAMPBELL NEWMAN AT
Norman claims Cairns won't need additional medical facilities "until the population reaches 400k or 500k people". Apparently he hasn't listened to his mate, Minister for Blogs Warren Entsch, who has visions of Cairns at 500,000 in 20 years! With Cairns locked in to only one access route from the fast-growing south to the CBD and the existing hospital, Norman will need to explain this stupidity in the future.
This as the doctors prepare to resign en masse, disinclined to sign contracts that allow one party (the LNP) to change them at will. Not much of a contract provision, and one feared to open the door for full hospital privatisation.
Norman's also proposed a cost-saving move that's breathtaking in its racial bias. He's proposed that kidney dialysis patients in Yarrabah receive their periodic treatments without even the presence of a registered nurse. Instead Norman plans to use TAFE-trained health care workers at the Gurriny Yealamucka facility in Yarrabah, almost an hour from Cairns Hospital should an emergency occur.
Sure, let's do cost-cutting experiments on our indigenous population in a place that votes ALP anyway. Under the bus they go!
Kidney failures are closely tied to the generally poor health of our indigenous population, including the high incidence of Type-2 diabetes.
All of this on top of the news (unreported by the Cairns Post) that the Cairns Hospital has been serving tainted meat to patients who already are sick. Perhaps the Norman-ordered switch from beef to skippy was part of this problem, too.
The loss of the south side hospital site is especially troublesome when you understand that eventually, the Cairns Hospital sitting at sea level will most assuredly be flooded and heavily damaged during a weather event. Guaranteed. Cairns has had now two golden opportunities to move this disaster waiting to happen, and we can thank John MacKenzie for this callous disregard of facts.
Norman meanwhile continues to use his LNP mates to push thru pocket-lining measures at the Cairns nonRegional Council. Pilebridge Pty. Ltd. has gotten access to a landlocked development site via a Council-owned road for a "tip" of $55,531 (including GST). Suddenly a virtually worthless piece of land is now worth. . . .millions? unSir Bob Norman is allegedly the director of Pilebridge.
Meanwhile, the money-strapped Queensland Government (led by Treasurer Tim "The Sky is Falling" Nicholls), has unveiled their latest tunnel boondoggle gift for Brisbane, in part from the taxpayers of Far North Queensland. We certainly want these city folk to be comfortable! Welcome, the $5 billion dollar "BAT" Tunnel!
