ANOTHER LOCAL BLOGGER WEIGHS IN ON DANGERS OF AQUIS PROPOSAL

The article is pretty good. The benefits that are apparent are short term and the long term tends to be more negative. I think everyone needs to make up their own mind as to what the future holds as it is speculative. For me the stimulus it will bring initially will be a good time to get out of Cairns. I do not see average wages increasing over time while we compete in a labour intensive industry with low paying regional neighbours.

Also who would provide finance? Seems too ambitious to be viable.

Why is Aquis being proposed and where is the money coming from?
View the 4 Corners program titled 'How China Fooled the World' http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/stories/2014/03/31/3972864.htm
The program clearly lays out how the Chinese leadership responded to the prospect of a global financial crisis and possibility of a world-wide depression. The response focused on a spending and investment program carried out on a scale never seen before in human history. China's extraordinary spending has left the country with levels of debt that many believe can only result in an economic crash with untold consequences for the world - particularly resource-driven economies like Australia. It becomes clear that Tony Fung is taking advantage of the panic that has gripped investors in China and is about to take them for the old double or nothing con.
Nothing to do with tourism.

The battle for supremacy over the drug trade and prostitution should be interesting as the local vested interests try and take on the Chinese triads for supplying the influx of tourists. The local crocs should be well fed!

Most businesses I talk to are seeing growth since the LNP came to power. Aquis will not stop environmental tourism, but the marketing it does will attract more people TO THE REGION. Nobody seems to get that, but I have experience elsewhere with this phenomenon, and it works. If more people come, most sectors will see benefits. Many of FNQ's regional centres are small, and only need a minute percentage of increased visitation to prosper. There are always those who find the glitz off-putting but the destination irresistible. Small operators will clean up on the cream that floats off Aquis. I do agree that there has thus far been silence on who pays for new roads, water etc, but I imagine at the appropriate time, a guarantee would be sought from the developer as it always is. too many negative nancys....

Anon. 4 Business have never had it so bad. Participation rate down big time. You may know some tourism operators that have improved but that is small part of the economy.
Overall the economy is dead.sick of lying LNP and they are the only ones trying to hype the economy. Had it been ALP with such a poor performance sure they would find the truth. Sick of idiots like King cherry picking to try and cover his total fail. People are hurting and we need action, not his les and spin.

Too many unknowns about this, for me to make a decision. Added to this is the fact the LNP members aren't engaging with the community so I am suspicious. Yeah I wonder about the triads as well. They'll move up from Sydney quick smart.

oh ffs Bob R get a life! So if it was an Irish development would it be the IRA? Or maybe an Italian one with the calabrian mafia? This is the worst kind of racist bullshit and highlights the weakness of your arguments. Typical leftist drivel 'if I did not think of it, it is no good and I will bag it any way I can'. At least the original blog had some valid points.

I reckon the Acquis people will build the casino first with combined hotel and then supposedly run out of funds. The rest of the development will be put on hold indefinitely,Newmans plan for a mega resort wil be fucked, the Fungs will have a casino and they will be laughing how easy it was to con the nasty littleNewman, the hick Trout and the effeminate King.

Remember the last time foreign tycoons parachuted into town with the promise of building a huge integrated resort style development that would bring thousand of tourists and a big boom of local businesses ..... Four words come to mind ..... Paradise Palms in Receivership!

So nothing for Cairns in Federal or state government budgets. Oh sorry cuts to tourism.

Anon 13:16. a lot of locals aren't as easily swayed by the beads and baubles as yourself. Can't imagine the mafia or a paramilitary organisation having much connection with SE Asian casinos, which Cairns will be a part of but the personal escorts advertising in the compost might give an indication of who is already running the show.

Anon 13:16. The truth is casino are popular for Chinese to launder money. They are not allowed to take more than about $3,ooo each time they travel outside China with a limit to $50,ooo in one year. So they use Macau to launder money using junkets. Triads very much part of this. So how can this casino work without junkets? I doubt it.

There's been nothing from old blubber guts Entsch about the Federal government services we are going to need up here, if the Aquis casino and mini-city go ahead. We will need more customs, immigration, Federal Police as well as ASIO, ASIS, DSD and ONA here for a start. Entsch's silence is yet more cause for suspicion that all of these plans for Aquis are pie in the sky nonsense.
