NEW QUEENSLAND COMPETITION SEES BOB "SLEEPY" MANNING THE FIRST WINNER OF THE "JOH-HOLE OF THE WEEK" AWARD

In a special Cairns nonRegional Council meeting called for this morning, Council went into closed session for a "Prejudicial Matter" - Review and Submission of the CRC EIS submission on the Aquis resort and CASINO.

It's absurd to believe that this submission, made on behalf of the ratepayers in Cairns, is prejudicial to anyone.  Presumably all the issues raised by Council on our behalf are known to Tony Fung and his representatives.  A local barrister has asserted that this Council has abused their power under the Local Government Regulation-2012 by even holding this meeting in secret.  There is no "prejudicial" consequence in sharing this information with the public.

On completion of the meeting, Bob "Sleepy" Manning released a "Community Statement" that only outlines the Aquis EIS and the areas of interest to Council.  It confirms that Council's "Detailed Analysis of the EIS" include reports on Economics, Social Impacts, Town Planning, Water and Waste Infrastructure, Ecology, Flooding, Transport, and Visual Impact.

But the public can't read the document, because Bob Manning has decided it's SECRET.  WE CAN'T BE TOLD WHAT *WE* HAVE TOLD THE QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT!  Representations have been made in OUR name (the Ratepayers of Cairns) but we're not allowed to know what we've said!

And while there's no precedent for the secrecy order surrounding this public report (a copy of which Gavin King has been waving at locals for a week), Manning then went the extra mile and issued a gag order on the Council Meeting!

Under penalty of discipline (including possible ejection from Council), Bob Manning has ordered that NO COUNCILLOR may discuss any portion of the EIS response and closed meeting with ANYONE.  All statements about the EIS can only come from Bob Manning!

For police-state style secrecy, arrogance, and disrespect for the public above and beyond, we nearby award Cairns Mayor Bob "Sleepy" Manning the "Joh-Hole of the Week" award.

Well, we are far too stupid to know what is good for us and for our city. Only a wise old Unity councillor has that ability. Thank goodness we have them there looking out for us and protecting our interests.

As a bloody rate payer why shouldn't we be bought up to date with a 8 frigging BILLION $$$$$ development. Looks like we pay for infrastructure as well, like it or not!!!! WANKERS.

The responsibility should be up to the Coordinator General rather than Council or anybody else to release submissions. This happens in any parliamentary enquiry unless withheld for specific reason except apparently in Queensland. The council submission should be fully released. However I can't criticize what has been released.

Oh shut up.

At least we are getting a shiny new casino, not an overpriced entertainment centre built on river bank mud that would only attract ukulele players

KS "The council submission should be fully released"

Any thoughts on why the council submission is not fully released and what likely specific interests there are not to release it?

You would not expect any better from this right wing puppet.
The 30 million cost to ratepayers for the lake street is a farce and have a look at what we got for that price, the only winners there were the mates in business who supplied the raw materials, the outcome is only for those who want to develop high rise and their overpriced apartments.
A couple of weeks ago on maccas muck show terry james was asked "how much would rates have risen if the entertainment precinct was built?", his answer was 10% over 10 Years, if I remember correctly the ratepayer was contributing approx 50million,
so by that brilliant bit of accounting by the deputy mayor the lake street ripoff will cost the ratepayer either 6% for 10 years or 12% for 5 years, and this mob of coucillors who support this kind of bullshit should be brought to account.

Don't worry- Robby Pyne will talk soon enough- he can never keep his bloody mouth shut!

Queenobeans said...

The ratepayers of CRC have spent $524,000 on consultancy fees for a response supposedly delivered on their behalf but are not allowed to see it?

Tony Hillier said...

I sincerely hope that Cr Pyne will tell ratepayers what we have the right to know regarding Council's EIS submission on the mega Aquis proposal. If he does, it will consolidate his already excellent prospects of dispatching the ineffectual tabloid hack King at next year's State election. It will also hasten the demise of Mayor Sleepy and his cronies.

Report is not being released as it has damning conclusions about Aquis and it's costs to Cairns

So, Bob Manning is quite happy to hide this from Cairns people

Where is the judicial review on all this?

Now here's a challenge to HBW readers. If between us all we can't get hold of a leaked copy of the 'barred from public release' council document, we really are losing the plot....go to it sniffer hounds! Seek and ye shall find! And when you do, post it for all to read!!!

Old man Manning looks like a tortued soul , he is getting upset when questioned on subjects that he really does not get . His efforts to answer questions about flouride were a joke for a person in his position, he even admits to not reading reports on subjects before forming policy. This is not a mayor who inspires.

To the contrary mickow, he inspires us to never settle for rabble again

I'm looking forward to the Four Corners episode in about a year's time unearthing all the back room deals and un-democratic processes involved in steam rolling Aquis through.

here here steve lets get acquis back to center and front but unfortunaly rabbot withdraws funding of abc in 11 months due to bias reporting ...against his party

Most educated people who want "REAL" news get it from ABC or SBS, Shanghai. If you want 5 minutes of news followed by 25 minutes of paid advertising in the guise of news (sit down and really watch the news to see what I mean), celebrity gossip, celebrity worship, rumours or hysteria about nothing then one watches, listens to commercial TV or radio or reads Murdock press. That is why Abbott, Mackenzie, Jones and their ilk hate the ABC. Public broadcasting is fact based not predisposed by wealthy Americans who try to dominate public debate in this country or by "shock jocks" who demand the downtrodden public vote for who they tell them to.If this isn't printed then it pretty well says it all doesn't.the end

Tony Hillier said...

What you say is largely accurate, Anon 15:38, but there has been an insidious trend on both ABC and SBS news bulletins in the past few years towards title tattle, celebrity focus, product placement and gratuitous promotion of upcoming programs. Modern news editors in the public and commercial sectors — radio as well — exhibit cockeyed values and a willingness to embrace homogeneity. Witness the way today's news reporters (90 per cent of whom seem to have been selected on looks rather than ability) preface a new sentence with "Now".

um to the person above please re read what I wrote and try again

That's right shanghai.I agree what you said but I was adding my bit.Abbott went so far as to ask(beg)the media not to pick on his government when he went out and brought lavish VIP planes for him to use when he was telling us the budget was in crisis. Abbott and his ilk hate public broadcasting because it won't swallow or report the spin.If Abbott,Hockey and that foot in the mouth senator from tassy had media advisors they wouldn't need spin and we could rely on commercial media to tell the truth.Until then ABC 24hour tv or ABC regular news seems to be the only way we can actually get the truth in this country.

Anonymous 19.08, we are not getting a "casino". We are getting a "mini-city" which will be home to thousands of Chinese nationals. Johannesburg is getting a Chinese mini-city too, with apartments being built to house 33,000 Chinese. The developers there are saying that they envisage upwards of 100,000 Chinese nationals will live there eventually. Ditto, Malawi is getting a Chinese "mini-city" with obligatory casino and capacity for 18,458 Chinese nationals to live there. New York's Catskills was the planned site for another Chinese "mini-city" but it has not yet been approved owing to frosty relations between the USA and China. So stop parroting nonsense about it being a "casino". It is a "mini-city" and as such is part of the Chinese plan for colonialisation.
