CAIRNS CONTINUES DOWNHILL SPIRAL UNDER MALFEASANCE OF SLEEPY BOB MANNING AND HIS disUNITY TEAM

Last night's ABC Four Corners program exposed to Australians the rampant corruption and Triad (Mafia) control over the Macau casinos.  While there is little evidence that the Macau regulators are interested in excising this corruption, the program highlighted the connections to the Packer-owned Crown Casinos in Melbourne and Perth, the now under-construction Barangaroo in Sydney, and the Packer investments in Macau.

No surprise to HBW readers, where this subject was first discussed over a year ago.

With the project under review by Joh Bjelke Newman and his rubber-stamp government, attention will soon focus on the lack of leadership being shown by Mayor Bob "Sleepy" Manning and his crew of misfits.

Just after the Aquis project was first announced, Manning and another councillor were asked during a community luncheon if either had ever even been to Macau.  Neither had.  Manning was asked if he thought it prudent for council to educate themselves about what was being proposed by Aquis by paying a visit to Macau.  Manning agreed.

To date he, nor anyone else in Council, has paid a visit to Macau.

And despite throwing a few million into Lake Street, the shortcomings for transit access and the danger presented to pedestrians has caused Manning to admit that the consultation was a sham.

But the changes being wrought on the Esplanade are even more dramatic.

Council approved conversion of one upscale restaurant, Mangostins, into a Sports Bar.  But since no smoking area was provided by the owners, Rattle n Hum, smokers piled into the space adjacent to upscale restaurant Kani's - which forced this restaurant to close.  All while Council
officers stood by and did nothing.  Can't even get all the illegal signs removed from the front of this rathole.

And now this iconic building that anchors the busiest corner in Cairns, at the corner of Shields and the Esplanade (anchored by Maccas) has been purchased by an investment group led by used car salesman Adam Adams.  (With parents that obviously had a sick sense of humour.)  Adams has trashed Kanis by putting a Night Owl overpriced convenience store where Kanis was.  Complete with gaudy, all-night signs.

And the wonderful upstairs area of Kanis, and the former Johnno's Nightclub, both overlooking the Lagoon and Pacific Ocean?  Bob Manning has approved (with no public notice) conversion of this space into 200 backpacker beds.  With the plans showing 100 with no outside light, in "cells" that bring conjure up visions of the Childers Backpacker Fire.  Council also approved this use with no additional parking, and not even bicycle parking!

One afternoon last week we saw that the gaudy signs on the corner of Shields and Aplin have been removed, leaving the mess that will welcome our G20 visitors.  This along with bicycles chained up to any immovable object, and filthy footpaths that haven't been cleaned in years.

But while gazing at the increasingly downmarket filth being pushed into the Esplanade by Manning, residents and visitors looked overhead as they saw (and heard the roar), gleaming in the sun, Tony Fung's new, multi-million dollar 757 "high roller" aircraft.  (Well, not really "new".  It's 24 years old, and sat for seven years in an airliner graveyard until purchased by Fung).  An airplane that is registered in Barbados - apparently to avoid Australian inspection regimes.

Fung has made a point of how he's "Australian" and has resided and invested in Queensland for a long time.  And his first action is - avoiding Australian registration and inspection by hiding behind Barbados?  But we digress. . . .

We were reminded again what the priorities are now in Cairns.   The CBD and Esplanade no longer need to be the "jewels" in the Cairns tourist infrastructure.  So Bob Manning has no problem putting backpacker prisons and tourism gouges on what was formerly our attractive waterfront area.

And despite being scheduled as a dignitary to be present at the opening festivities for the Festival on Collins, neither Manning nor anyone from his council appeared to show their support of this event.  There's much too big a chance of being heckled, and worse, as much of Cairns has become aware of his rudderless leadership.  Manning and his partner boast about attending "real entertainment" shows in Sydney whenever they want, and yet haven't once poked their heads into The Tanks - Cairns' award winning entertainment centre.

It's time to face facts.  Manning just doesn't give a shit about Cairns, its citizens, and its future.  He's satisfied to believe that the Tony Fung Aquis project represents the prosperous future of Cairns.

Without even taking the time to take a look at what's in store for us.

We're becoming the Australian equivalent of Kuta (Bali), a tacky hell-hole of a place which draws bogans for a week of drunken madness. But, anything for a quick buck ...

hbw forgot to say adams is the vice president of the cairns chamber of commerce

I've seen the large crowd of drunken smokers standing on the footpaths next to Rattle and Hum, and couldn't figure out what was going on. Every other drinking house has been required to provide a dedicated smoking area. Why not Jon Hasler? Council shouldn't be giving a pass to a guy like Hasler who has been running one of the biggest eyesores on our beautiful Esplanade.

Mayor Manning snubbed one of the biggest annual community events in the Cairns calendar — viz the recent Council-run Carnival On Collins — even though he was down to give the official address. I bet he didn't miss the Amateurs! Val Schier attended almost every single community and cultural event of note during her tenure as mayor.

Its not just Manning and CRC, what about that useless group Advance Cairns, chaired by wannabe Trent Twomey, former Entsch campaign manager. They're falling over themselves for a piece of the action but are so useless they cant even get the basics right. What exactly are they doing for Cairns - and how do they justify the $250k Manning gives them each year?? More questions need to be asked about this useless mob who seem to do nothing but show up at the opening of an envelope and try to take credit for it.

I have said it before and I will say it again for anyone who missed it.Sleepy Manning doesn't run this town, he is just the puppet for the LNP who set the agenda and approve or disapprove everything council does. I have a friend who went to school with him and he tells me the man should have repeated every year off schooling he undertook he was so backward.the end.

Sunfish, judging by the nationality of most of the hookers in the Cairns Post Personals page I think they are already here.

The drunken bogans are already here. Now the southern based footballers are invaded the bars. I'm not sure that they exhibit better manners than the homeless drunks being removed for the duration of the G20 meetings.
I see Cairns being a substitute for the Bali holiday makers. Pity.

Vallour... Regarding my 'anonymous' remark calling you a 'dick head' with Night Owl. I didn't mean to be so rude to you. I apologise. I agree with your sentiment! I have never been in one, but if a used car salesman is the owner of it, you can be assured it is going to be a ripoff. Adams ran a shit business on Mulgrave Road for many years. I almost got stung there in the late 70s, but woke up and purchased a car elsewhere (still got stung though at Quay Ford). Then he took forever to build the premises at where QTV/Ten broadcast from, and it failed. The the Night Owl rip off stores - there has to be BIG money in it to run it from such a prime location. The best target? The backpackers, if they need something late at night after dining at Woolworths. I have seen it - they 'shop' with a trolley. They get a loaf of bread (preferably sliced for this shop) and a roast chicken. Then devour it as they 'phantom shop' and then leave the bones and empty bag in the shopping trolley - then time permitting if the urge for a joint is not that urgent, a FREE hot shower at the Esplanade, then FREE camping in the shit box camper on the Esplanade. (Fuck the parking ticket too). The point is: Adams knows he will get some business, and make a motza. Back packers will shoplift what they can anyway, so let them continue to shop there till he goes broke. Then we will be rid of the fuking Night Owl! (And a peaceful sleep for you and I).

The recent 4 Corners program "High Rollers" explained the role of TRIADS with Chinese owned casinos. It is the role of the Triads to firstly find the "high rollers" and convince them to try their luck at the casino. They then arrange "junkets", the air travel, the accommodation and their attendance at the gambling table. Lastly, it is the role of the Triads to get the gamblers to pay up or else. (So here in Cairns we may well find bodies caught in fishing nets out at sea.) The Chinese high rollers are for the most part rolling in fraudulently obtained monies from the Chinese Government. It is estimated that billions of dollars stolen from the Chinese Government have made their way to casinos. So here we are, here in Cairns, now committed to a huge project which will see the Triads arrive in the district, and complicit in a scheme which is known to take stolen Chinese government monies. What have the Newman LNP government rushed in and done??

shanghai, years ago tuberculosis was introduced to Australia mostly by European settlers. The Irish and the Scots were particularly affected with the disease. There was no cure for the disease until the 1950s. Today with increased air travel linking us to the rest of the world, we still stand a risk of importing the disease from world travellers. China does have one of the world's highest population of tuberculoid sufferers, so our risk of importing the contagion from a dramatic increase in tourists coming from China, is higher. It isn't an issue to be complacent about either, particularly in these current times when both the Newman and Abbott Governments are savagely cutting health expenditure. It wasn't that long ago that Campbell Newman wanted to close the main tuberculosis treatment centre in Brisbane, if you recall. This would have been a very dangerous move, as many of us pointed out to the various political representatives. Newman overturned his original decision and kept the centre going after so many of us raised the alarm. Never doubt that tuberculosis is a very serious disease.
