WHAT'S BEHIND THE ATTEMPTS TO SPIN THE MURRAY STREET STORY AND PROBE THE REAL FACTS

As the Cairns community tries to come to grips with the horrific events that occurred on Murray Street this week, the Queensland Police Service and other Queensland Government agencies are spinning the situation furiously and choking off the facts that are now emerging in the case.

Phrases like "close knit", "family community", "child friendly"
are just some of the phrases being used to describe this area.  You'd hardly believe that this could be the same place that 4CA shock jock John MacKenzie has routinely called 'the most notorious street in Cairns', and where Member for MacKenzie Gavin King has been demanding Cairns Council install full-time CCTV cameras - the first outside the CBD.

If the community was "close knit" and "family oriented", you wouldn't need continual police patrols and permanently installed CCTV cameras. We're being fed a King sized portion of LNP bullshit.

Indeed, King along with his ministerial comrades have been hiding a government-commissioned report on the "M" suburbs in Cairns that discusses the high crime rate, the youth sexual and domestic abuse rampant in these communities, along with the massive unemployment - in excess of 50%.

The report has been quietly hidden so as to not embarrass the LNP government for their failure to do anything in these areas other than ramp up policing.  And King has been the instigator in removal of social services from the "M" suburbs, claiming they are too costly and don't achieve any results.  He's not proposed any replacements however, so the community has declined even further under the LNP Newman government.  More have been jailed or run back to the Cape, and employment training and intervention has been withdrawn.  It's almost like Gavin King's been holding the knife himself.

On the streets around the crime scene yesterday, the question everyone is asking - "how could this happen".  The QPS and government ministers know full well how this happened.

Methamphetamines.  Shard.  Ice.

The area is lousy with it.  People with no employment and
little hope turn to drugs to deaden their emotions.  Feeling nothing is better than feeling lousy.  But the ice epidemic comes with a little discussed secret of its own.  Mental illness, paranoia, irrational behaviour, and extreme violence are the hallmarks of this drug.  How does a 37 year old woman cope with hopelessness in her life?  With her dole payments she can easily afford the Murray Street drug of choice.

Mersane Warria exhibited all these symptoms and more when Police arrived at her door to discover the horror she had inflicted on her family.  Neighbours heard the rage from this woman, and saw the irrational acts (which included pitching one daughter's bed into the back garden and putting boxes of possessions in the street for anyone to take).  But in a neighbourhood filled with ice-addicted people, the screaming rage and irrationality are just part of the daily streetscape.  Youth in the area yesterday were happy to give us the story about their "family oriented" neighbourhood.

Indeed this TI woman has reportedly never held a job, instead using casual sex to keep the babies (and Centrelink payments) coming.  Payments that experts have estimated at close to $50,000 per year + free government housing.  This must be looked at by the community as a contributing factor.  This was not a "low income" family.

TI Elders have spoken on the role of "uncles and aunties" in the community.  Is this the kind of guidance that the elders are dishing out?

The QPS and others are now invoking the mantra of "cultural sensitivity" in an attempt to throw a blanket over the whole event.  Cultural sensitivity my arse.  Many in Manoora are suggesting that Police have deliberately avoided big drug crackdowns in the "M" suburbs as a kind of community anesthetic.  "Keep 'em doped up and quiet", said one resident.

Meanwhile, the scammers are well and truly out now, with several "charities" springing up on the internet including at Facebook - a page said to be created by one Howie Thomas, friend of Member for Barron River Michael "Mick" Trout.  Offering to be a depository for donations, locals who question the need for donations are quickly blocked and their posts removed.  Howie is "The Social Guy" on Facebook, a company that manages the Facebook presence of Aquis. "The Social Guy" is using the same fraudulent tactic on the Murray Street page as that on the Aquis page - buying black market "likes" to make things seem more important than they are.  Aquis has 47,000 "likes" and only 106 actual visits!

And Howie Thomas claims "The Social Guy" is a business - and yet there is NO ABN registration for him anywhere!  Just what Aussies need - another company not paying any company tax!  Even our friends at Loose Change have identified Howie Thomas and scams.  Others have noted some other Social Guy scams below in the comments.

With Centrelink known to be involved in planning (and paying) for the funerals, where the money might be going is obviously a cause for concern.  Especially if the money is being raised by someone outside the community.

It now seems a legitimate charity associated with the Uniting Church will coordinate any donations related to this tragedy.

More soon. . . .

From day one when they said " normal suburb, close nit community, child friendly etc, " I said what bullshit. It was a cover up to the benefit rest of Australia. In Cairns it is a no go area for outsiders, everyone knows that. Now the shit has hit the fan there will appear to be a big clean up before the coming election.

That page was set up by Howie Thomas the social guy who also does the aquis facebook page. He's also been peddling that page on every other fb page he represents. It's disgusting. There was a post early yesterday where he was asking people to email him photos of the kids, he got slammed so bad by the TI and they were saying how disrespectful to even have the page.of course in Howie Thomas's style he deleted all of it. Lucky we got screenshots if you want. Add that to his personal rant earlier this week about running Muslims out of town and then posting photos of himself gorging on local food and being waited on by personal maids in Thailand. Wonder if he knows that 4% of Thais are Muslim?

yeah ha, well at least there's 8 crims of the street between 7pm-7am now....

Hillbilly, I just hope to God you are wrong on this. Yes, the area does have a 50% unemployment rate. Can you imagine, just imagine if you will, the impact on Cairns once the LNP succeed in axeing unemployment benefits for six months for the under 30s? Frankly, it is just too horrific to contemplate. We all know that crime will rise anyway, but if it is fuelled by drug addiction what nightmarish scenario will unfold? If what you say is true, then the people of Cairns have a right to know.

Great reporting, HBW! Isn't it odd that the Cairns Post is sitting on this information. there seems to be no lack of people now talking about the "ice" problems in this city and yet the CP is protecting the coppers and pollies. Shameful!

"Detectives investigating the deaths of eight children in Cairns are considering the possibility the prime suspect – the mother of seven of the children – was on the drug ice at the time of the deaths."

Howie Thomas is not the social guy, he is the social parasite. All he sees is a dollar in everything. This was the person who tried to run a 'buy coral planting' scam and is also the person who is in charge of warren entsch and michael trouts LNP branches whilst also working for aqis!

The Courier Mail yesterday also mentioned that ice may have been an issue in the deaths of the children. I don't know much about this ice stuff other than seeing commercials in newspapers and on TV. I agree with what someone said above that we in the Cairns community need to know more.

Care to reveal more on the C'link involvement in the funerals?

We are posting anonymously about Howie Thomas and in know way endorse the comments (also made anonymously) made by the person referring to the poor children as criminals. We believe that what happened was truly appalling and believe the actions by Howie Thomas to be disgusting and exploitative. He's crowing on his page about comments being deleted on here and yet has had a big edit and delete of his own page and also the Page he set up for the poor murdered children. He has since deleted most his inflammatory comments about Muslims. Laura Trout appeared to agree with Howie's statements on Muslims and said she agreed completely. Also deleted. Lucky we keep Screen shots of all of it to prove exactly what we are saying.

Howie Thomas posted this on Facebook.

"The Social Guy _ FB Page not set up by me and is actually run by a girl who I have never met who decided to start the page on Friday afternoon and reached out for my help. Yes I am on holiday and yes I am using my own money to promote the numbers build as my own tiny contribution at this time of great sadness in the Cairns community. There was an initial thought to run donations and yes I did post to that effect to many people and pages that we as a company run. However we are not experts in distributing monies and I understand there are several mourning fathers-but do not know the full details. So we have decided to leave that to the experts and the page will not promote for donations and the page is there just for people to leave their personal messages. I know you think you contribute an important role in the Cairns community by these so called exposes-but is there an ounce of compassion in you when you write this vitriolic stuff-much of which is pure conjecture. Why not let the Police do their work and not play amateur detective.

Shame on you for telling porkies Howie! The girl he is talking about is Emily Rossi who co-incidentally worked for Cairns Airport as Digital Media Co-ordinator from July 2012 and sells Isogenic which is a MLM scam. Wonder why someone who has worked in digital media would suddenly NEED Howies help and surely one would reasonably think their paths had crossed before...Cairns isn't that big! And why would Howie (out of the goodness of his heart) pay for Facebook likes for a page he says is not. And for the record a guy called Matt Bond has now been allocated as spokesperson and is actively soliciting for donations on the Facebook page and even heading over to Facebook groups set up by T Islanders and telling them to butt out and he has it covered.

Why do they place children in public housing in Murray Street?

The most engaged group on the Aquis facebook page are from Port Moresby! Isn't that false and misleading in Australian Consumer law...to mislead the public into thinking that 47,000+ people support the Aquis proposal when in reality it's nowhere near that.

ive known Mr Howard Thomas for many years and if this is the way he runs his business Aussie Logos by pulling the wool over peoples eyes whilst dipping into their back pockets perhaps you would be better placed to send him back to the UK im sure they can find a nice quiet drug free Muslim street for him and his family.

i cannot believe howie thomas has a company that sells face book likes to other companies to cheat the public ive just looked at his website and copied this from it.
Buy Facebook Likes from an Australia-based company today and expose your business or brand to thousands of people on Facebook.

I grew up in Cairns and now live in the southern states. It's been frustrating as people ask me "How could this happen, I thought Cairns was a quiet and safe community!"

Yes, it is for the most part. But this street has always been notorious for as long as I can remember. My bus used to go down the street, and I recall the interesting characters that would board - praying they wouldn't sit next to me, for the abuse and taunts that would surely follow.

I remember a time when the Sunbus drivers refused to drive down that street due to rocks being thrown at the buses as they went past.

Yet none of this is reported in the wider media - instead it's made out to be some sort of haven in Cairns. Bullsh*t.

Listen to a police scanner any night of the week, and there are several incidents in this street alone. It's not uncommon to see police called to altercations there regularly.

This isn't new. Of course, it doesn't justify the murder of 8 children - nothing does, and nothing excuses it. But I resent that the street is made out to seem like any other street in Cairns, because it's definitely not.
