CAIRNS CHAMBER HOLDS $80 LUNCH TO ANOINT PRO-BUSINESS CANDIDATES - WHILE CAIRNS AIRPORT ROAD SEES ANOTHER TRAGEDY DUE TO "BUSINESS SCREWS THE PUBLIC" CHAMBER MENTALITY

CEO OF CAIRNS AIRPORTS KEVIN BROWN
SPEAKING FROM HIS OFFICE AT THE
MACKAY AIRPORT??
At lunch today, the Cairns Chamber of Commerce held a private luncheon to push their business agenda at a so-called "debate" among the local parliamentary candidates.

It's unclear how this kind of "debate" with the big end of town is representative of the average Cairns voter.  Few of whom can afford $80 for a hotel lunch.  In fact a large number of voters in Cairns would consider themselves lucky if their entire food budget were $80 A WEEK.  Including many of the minimum-wage workers serving this mob.

Moderating this audience was the profoundly anti-Labor, anti-women, anti-everything -  John MacKenzie.

AFTERMATH OF TAXI CRASH OFF THE
VERY DANGEROUS CAIRNS AIRPORT
ACCESS ROAD
Among those in the audience was Kevin Brown, CEO of Cairns Airport.  He's been in the media a lot recently - including a recent TV appearance where he's heard appealing for more public money to market the airport.  Given that Cairns Airport is a privately held company, isn't marketing the airport THEIR business cost?  What return on investment does the taxpayer get from giving cash to the Cairns Airport company?

Shouldn't the owners of the Cairns Airport be marketing their property???

But the airport road is also their business asset, one which has seen one pedestrian run down and killed this week and while Kevin Brown was dining has seen a taxi crash off the road and into the mangroves.

Note from the TV interview with Kevin Brown - behind him isn't the logo of the Cairns Airport, but the MacKay Airport.  Both airports are owned by the same vulture capital companies who clearly don't care how many tourists they maim coming in and out of their airports.

Profit the #1 goal.

John MacKenzie continually squawks that a tourist killed by a crocodile "would ring the death knell on the Cairns tourist industry".  How many tourists do you have to kill on the airport access road before they stop coming?

LNP are good for BIG business like Adani, not the type of business we have in Cairns.

You're three for three this week, Hillbilly. And some were saying you'd been silenced.

You're right about today's "big end of town" event at the Casino. The average punter (Cairns is full of them), the retirees, the down on their luck and unemployed - all they're going to see is pictures of the business community calling all the pollies in to give them their handouts.

The funny part is John MacKenzie. He's always saying "the community is on the ropes", "everyone's on struggle street". None of them (me included) are getting $80 luncheons organised so we can tell the pollies our problems.

This is why Cairns is going to vote Labor back in. We've seen the results of a conservative government on us. And it isn't pretty.

Labor sold the airport. Just saying.

WTF Shanghai can you hurry up and get pissed so you can comment on here, the ones commenting now don't make sense.hahahaha

Labor sold a lot of things Anon 18:22. yet did not stop us getting in debt. So we have evidence. We lost the revenue we needed to keep growing. The funding of the states need to be reviewed. We change a lot of ways we do business but not how we fund growth so we need reform. First though we have to stop selling revenue streams.

It was Malcolm Fraser who handed the airports over to local ownership way back in 1979. Prior to that they were all controlled and owned by the Federal Government.

I picked up a mate from the airport last week. Whilst I was waiting a passenger asked the shuttle bus staff how much to take him, his wife and two kids to Port Douglas. They told him $40 per head. He said $160 to get my family to Pt Douglas? They said yes sir and if you don't like it grab a taxi!
The poor bastard was off to a bad start to his holiday.
I dare say the trip to the reef was cancelled there and then....

FFS!!!! Are you serious McKenzie was the moderator???? Could they have got a more partisan moderator??!?! The Chamber doesn't even pretend it's non-political and bipartisan anymore. What a fucking joke.

Anyone think the current "Join the Cairns Chamber of Commerce" tv advertising campaign is just a little too LNP cosy? The blonde announces "our region has $18 billion worth of projects in the pipeline" Just a coincidence they're reminding viewers of this in the week leading up to an election?

Oh Tunnels, you are far too cynical *giving an Abbott wink*.

The struggling locals can't afford an $80 lunch but seem to get through a $30 pack of smokes daily. And what sort of twit flies to Cairns and has not organised his transport to Port? By the time you have bought the bus and paid the driver those pesky penalty rates and all $40 sounds pretty reasonable. You can't on the one hand want everyone to get paid a mint and then expect it to be cheap. Otherwise you are just a dick.

$47 to Port Douglas so 20 people is near $1000. Cairns has always been a rip off for tourism.

The chamber / Advance nowhere thing yesterday was a complete joke. Its patently clear the LNP is pulling the strings of these two organisations. Advance Nowhere gets $250,000 of ratepayers money EVERY YEAR and is supposed to be a bipartisan 'economic development' organisation. The only thing this organisation does well is highlight its complete incompetence and its willingness to bend over for the LNP.

Anon 1036 you would be a business tycoon for sure. Rocket scientist in your spare time too. How often do you reckon there is 20 on the bus? FFS

Tired of these wankers who reckon tourism is ripoff in Cairns. The same wankers who support penalty rates then whinge when their favorite restaurant closed on a holiday. The same people who support penalty rates go to Bali for holidays and use staff who get a pittance. The same dicks who support yet more legislation for tourism and want it to be cheaper. Idiots.

I was amused by the very biased coverage of the so called debate in The Cairns Post yesterday, 29th January. The whole thing was nothing but an LNP campaign exercise. Nothing was said about issues affecting the general population to benefit the quality of their lives, like legalising medicinal marijuana, or increasing funding to aged care. Lies were told about the waiting lists on the public health system. Not all the candidates were invited either. Basically it was nothing more than a disgusting sucky sucky sucky exercise for the LNP. Oh, as for the funding to widen part of the Kuranda Range...well DURRRRRRH! Those of us who are locals well recall the biggest upgrade of the Kuranda Range happened during the tenure of the previous Labor Governments. During the Bjelke Petersen era, the Kuranda range road was nothing but a one laned, badly pot holed, dangerous road down the range. It was Labor Governments which upgraded three of the range roads, the Gillies, the Kuranda and the Palmerston Range road. The Palmerston during the era of Bjelke Petersen was a bloody nightmare to travel on!
