|GAVIN KING EXPLAINING TO|
PREMIER JOH BJELKE NEWMAN WHY

Their announcement? Adding more right-turn capacity from the northbound Cook Highway instead of fixing the real problem. THIS PROBLEM WAS FIXED BY OPENING LAKE STREET TO THE AIRPORT ROAD! The Department of Main Roads has confirmed with us that the right-turn arrow traffic light cycle from the Cook Highway to the Airport Road has been reduced dramatically due to the diversion of the city traffic to Lake Street.
Insiders have reported that in fact there is no capacity on the intersection to allow two-lane turns into the Airport Road without blocking the intersection to southbound traffic - the last result that this intersection needs.
What has motivated the announcement of this patently stupid "solution"?
Just six months ago, Gavin King praised the opening of the new Lake Street access and then said "I'd like to see an alternative entry/exit to the airport from the northside. If you can have an entry/exit point on that northern end, that will certainly alleviate some of those problems on the existing entry point". Another reasonable and sensible idea. But Gavin King is too weak a member to sell a real solution to his LNP leaders. Instead, he's told "here's $6M, Gavin. Do something with it", and given a pat on the arse.
DTMR insiders also confirm that the offered $6M is inadequate to so the proposed work, and alleviate this congestion. King FAILED at getting any money from the State for the new Lake Street intersection. Not one buck.
Siamese twin Michael "Hide the Backhoe" Trout stood
shoulder-to-shoulder with King at this announcement alongside Treasurer Tim Nicholls. What's Michael Trout's plan to address the 50% increase in commute times from the Northern Beaches to the city that have occurred during his term as the Member for Barron River?
When the treasurer was asked about a "real" solution to the congestion, an overpass, Nicholls called that "more than optimistic". LNP-speak for "we're not spending any money in Cairns, mate. We don't give a stuff about you".
Well, Trouty's got nothing.
However he DID announce that he can get this electorate $500k to "upgrade" the walking tracks on Mt. Whitfield.
Huh? We thought this was a joke when we read it.
It's clear neither King nor Trout have heard anything the electorate has been telling them for 2 1/2 years. Where is the investment in Cairns by the LNP government they represent? The voters across Cairns are angry that they're being shortchanged by the Newman LNP government on infrastracture. Brisbane is getting a $2.5B government office building and more tunnels and bridges. Cairns gets. . . .an unneeded intersection upgrade and another walking track?
WTF is wrong with this picture?
