RAIL CRASH EXPOSES SAME CONTINUING NEGLECT OF FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND - ALP AND LNP GOVERNMENTS BOTH

Well, another rail vs. vehicle crash.

WHY DOES THIS MAJOR THOROUGHFARE
HAVE NO GATES?

While we don't claim to know the facts surrounding this crash, the underlying cause is crystal-clear.  Despite years of level crossing crashes around the state and successive governments (ALP & LNP) both pledging to address the issue, it would seem the only level crossings that have received necessary upgrades are in the southern part of the state.

Funny that.

After the Cardwell Tilt Train crash in 2008 (who in their right mind has an unprotected crossing of a major rail line with the main national highway anyway?), the Blight government pledged to bridge this crossing.  Andrew Cripps, then Member for Hinchinbrook, acknowledged that Queensland is 'far behind the rest of the country' in level crossing safety measures.

Indeed, a year later, a truck driver was killed at an ungated crossing at Mundoo.  Blight said that a "task force" was underway to ensure that the most hazardous crossings were upgraded - especially those in urban areas.

Cairns has had crashes, including one serious crash just last year.  Kuranda train engineers tell of daily near-misses.

So how do the results of this "task force" get rural, south Queensland upgraded and something on a  major Cairns street gets nothing?

THIS CROSSING, FROM AN UNSEALED RURAL ROAD, QUALIFIED
FOR LEVEL CROSSING GATE UPGRADE.  WHY?
BECAUSE IT'S NEAR BRISBANE, THATS WHY!

We all know the answer.  Years and years of ineffective and impotent representation by our local officials and a general attitude of neglect by all levels of government.

blight - I can see what youve done there. Fuckin' funny I suppose for some, but which government started the rail realignment after the Cardwell tragedy? And started installing boom gates through regional towns. Newman? I can think of some funny names to call him and his do nothing cronies.

Q. How come no accidents at James Street Crossing?
One of the busiest crossings in the cairns region?
And there's no boom gates installed here.

A. Because every accident is because the lazy dead brain driver who did not obey the rules and approach the crossing with caution.

Reality is that these boom gate installations cost $400,000+ each.

This is a good point. NSW has all level crossings logges and the top 300 rated for safety, not aware of anything similar in QLD. see link below:

The one at Cardwell was upgraded following the last crash. I dunno how many people there got wiped out over the years, but it was the Bligh Government which finally did something about it. Interesting about what the NSW government does. Maybe we need to follow suit here.

Where is the crossing located that you say is near Brisbane in the above photo ?

Many factors involved in selecting a Railway Crossings for an upgrade. The amount of road & rail traffic, location of the crossing and the amount of near misses. Also many crossings in the north are private cane railways and not the resposiblity of QR nor the state government.

You also have to remember that boom gates don't stop the idiots. Boom gate strikes are a common issue to the point where cameras are required in high non-compliance areas.
