CAIRNS POLICE TAKE BACK MANGO TREE BY OUTWITTING A HALFWIT

It was revealed that the Cairns Police "infiltrated" the Green protest organised around saving one tree in Munro Martin Park.

There are a lot of things wrong with what's going on at Munro Martin - no consultation, handpicking a landscape architect with no competition or competitive bidding, and the bullyboy tactics that have become standard at the Cairns (non)Regional Council.

Cairns Police managed to sneak one past the goalie, and took back the "occupied" tree from the protestors in one fell swoop.  The goalie is the brain-addled, non-productive, and self-appointed "green leader" for Cairns, Geoff Holland.  So as protest leader, Holland gets chatted up by some guy he's never seen before that's rocked-up unknown and unvetted.  Geoff gleefully then steps out of the tree to get a coffee and schmooze with the press.  Turns out the new guy is a copper.

The police are billing this as a "skillful" actions on their part, but anyone that knows Holland is aware that he's an incompetent self-promoter.  All Cairns can hear the guffaws from the Green community.  An elected leader summed it up best - "What a moron!"

Say Geoff, having a core of trusted associates you've vetted is Protesting 101.  Handing off the whole protest to a stranger is a colossal strategic blunder by a leftie jackarse.

Good Job, Geoff!  Our Leftie Jackarse of the Year!

Well, half-wit you may call him, but at least the guy stands for something. That Manning, as custodian of Cairns for (hopefully) just three years, can unilaterally decide to put a historic ninety year old tree to the chainsaw shows he stands for nothing, respects nothing, least of all constituent ratepayers of Cairns who deserve an opportunity to have an input into what happens in their town. And the undignified haste to revamp Martin Munro park (presumably with Foxtails)? It's simply to have something to point to come CRC election time, because less than nothing has happened in this wasted mayoral term. Oh, wait, yes, we saved the state and federal governments millions of dollars by handing back the grant money for the shovel-ready CEP. Oh, I'm forgetting, that had to happen because it sat right where our very own mega-port serviced with the newly dredged inlet would allow super-tankers right into the heart of our city to discharge petrol (which would probably still cost more per litre than they currently pay in Weipa). The only thing to excite Manning from is stupor is thoughts of tall white gleaming high rises and glitzy casinos. Trees are just obstacles infested with flying pests which damage duco and make a noise (no, not like trucks and traffic, that's music to his ears. And a sense of history? That's for the sentimental.

Mayoral candidate Jim Brooks and Connect Cairns will be taking on Manning and his cronies at the council election on March 19 next year. They stand for something more substantial and worthy. But they're going to need a helping hand to battle the old boy network.

I would rather have a city with shady trees and nature than high rise concrete jungles where the sun never shines and the sea breezes can't penetrate. But then again this is what this council stands for, concrete and ugliness and they wonder why the Japanese stopped coming. DUH DUH DUH!

Hillbilly watcher please don't criticise someone who is prepared to take a stand.

.. and please take a stand against a Council that doesn't appear to have the appropriate approvals in place to undertake this work.. just saying ! Investigate more.

Please play the issue.. not the person fighting it !

Otherwise you also become the same, in your words,'jack-arse'

Alright HBW, I don't always agree with Jah Fe as he is called, but I agree with TAS above. We need the Geoff Hollands in our community because they are the only ones holding onto the uniqueness of Cairns, which is slipping away so fucken fast it isn't funny. Yeah Manning doesn't have any imagination and doesn't give a shit about losing the individuality of Cairns and turning us into another clone of every city around S.E. Asia. Yeah mate I love the old mango trees too for their shade and durability. Mate, Id shout Geoff a beer any day for his efforts. His blood is worth bottling mate.

Gosh, I'm not exactly a "tree hugger", however I applaud Geoff on his efforts. I have just returned from a holiday in Darwin, after an absence of some 43 years. I first visited it in 1972 and, needless to say the city is unrecognisable as the unruly, bush frontier town with its wide, dusty unsealed roads, shabby corrugated iron and timber buildings, old wooden pubs that I remembered so well. Today the only remaining identifiable things are the lofty, shady trees in the Botanical Gardens. The huge rain trees with their massive shady canopies, the majestic black bean trees, the damson plums and the towering Indian trees are still there, just as I recalled. Inside the gardens, the temperature is cool and delicious whilst outside away from the trees, one could easily bake alive in our own juices. We take our trees for granted I think and don't see them in terms of tourist attractions in their own right. Bob R. has made a good point above in that Geoff is trying to hold on to those things which make Cairns different. You were very unfair here, Hillbilly!!

It's OK for HBW to have his opinion...I enjoy his satire, but basically it's warrioring behind a keyboard anonymously as compared to someone actively going out there and having the guts to put himself on the line (or up a tree as as the case).
We need more like Geoff Holland and, yes, I'd certainly shout you a beer or an mango dacqueri for your bottle.

22.33 Yes agree more guts than glory doing that, last thing I saw on this issue was building a greenhouse and filling with fantastic creepers, mickey mouse shit to me,like we have the Botanical gardens and our Rainforest, hello.A few more trees to soak up the pollution from the endless traffic on the two main fronting roads was all that was needed.

Haha, HBW telling it like it is. What about the halfwit's sidekick Jim cavil and his tenuous grasp on the English language?

As usual with the Manning Council, NO PUBLIC CONSULTATION on developments particularly those that affect PUBLIC SPACE. We deserve a Council that is at least willing to bring the people along with them. Short meetings and often behind closed doors are not welcome Mr. Manning. Anxious to hear what those putting their hand up for Lord Mayor at the next election have to say.

What a joke. Cairns has high unemployment, high crime, a declining tourism industry, a dead building industry, poor infrastructure and a Nazi like speed camera police force, yet the saving of one of a Sleepy Bobs mango trees is the most important article in the Cairns media? Fuck me sideways!

Surely it was possible for the design of whatever is being built to incorporate the old tree? I see that concrete bunker is still there, what's that all about?
