YOU'VE GOT TO QUESTION THE SANITY OF OUR BUSINESS LEADERS WHEN THINGS LIKE THIS ARE EVERYDAY OCCURRENCES

We were really hoping we didn't need to have anything else to say about this sorry, sordid Cairns chapter.  It makes us all look like lunatics.  But sorry, we can't let it go.

It was long ago evident that Paul Freebody and his mob wouldn't have the intelligence or management savvy to put together a waterpark.  His 'extensive research' in Las Vegas led him to believe he could corner the car washing market in FNQ.  The results of that fiasco are well-documented, and very clear.

WHY WOULD A BUSINESSMAN BUY HIS
OWN EXCAVATOR TO BUILD A $40M WATERPARK?
Remember, Paul Freebody applied his business acumen to the Cairns Council.  And we've seen how business savvy our current council is.  Rebuilding a poorly-located swimming pool to the tune of $20+ Million, now running months late and untold Million$ over budget.  Then Sleepy Bob rushes through a $60M refurbishment of our grossly inadequate theatre, building a shiny NEW grossly inadequate theatre.  The stage STILL TOO SMALL to hold the Queensland Orchestra, that currently visits with a cutdown ensemble when they come to Cairns. 1300 seats over two different new theatres, along with a huge new unwanted park upgrade, with a grossly inadequate 180 car parks.  And the design sadly has only 1/3 the current standard for women's restrooms.  When asked about the failure to fix these longstanding problems at the Civic Theatre with the new design, Manning said "if they want equality they need to learn to stand and pee like the rest of us".   The Bob Manning version of Paul Freebody's "witches and bitches" attack on the previous council.

So Freebody was all a-twitter when he breathlessly announced he'd found an investor/sucker to underwrite his dream.  It fooled us not.

Freebody, anxious to pat himself on the back, moved a big caravan to the site, and tore down the dilapidated Hislop Shark buildings - leaving huge piles of rubble that is rumoured to be filled with asbestos.

So just weeks later nasty emails between Freebody World Headquarters and the investor/sucker are "leaked" to the Cairns Post.  Do we know how this happened?  Not important.  Is this how business works elsewhere?

You must be kidding.

This is the level of business acumen driving our poor city.

So we can now report the sad, graffiti-laden Freebody
caravan has been removed from the site.  A large trash skip sits filled with junk from the trailer, and oddly a mattress.

But even more inexplicable is the $50K Kato excavator now parked (illegally) along the Cook Highway with a sad looking FOR SALE sign spray painted next to it.  "CALL PAUL" it says.

We can't make this shit up.

You've got to wonder what this clown was thinking, buying his own excavator and slapping an "Adventure Waters" logo on the back.

It is inexplicable to explain - unless you inhabit the parallel universe that is Paul Freebody.

We'd love an explanation.

Absolute gold medal article!!! I have a bone to pick with you though HBW. You mention Freebody along with words such as 'business leaders' and 'business acumen'! Ha ha ha. Definitely not! Next to the name Freebody should be the words 'failure', 'tool' and 'Sleepy Bob's Bitch'.

WTF was that comment from Manning referring to women standing up to piss? Isn't that sexist and inappropriate coming from a (non) respected city Mayor, a government employee and local leader? C'mon Bob, we all know that you yourself sit down to piss!

Perhaps Kevin Brown will purchase that shitty excavator and use it to dig up the International terminal aircraft parking gates where allegedly up to 30,000 litres of leaked aviation fuel is sitting? An airport fueler told me that the airport fuel facility had already spent a million dollars trying to find the leak that has been leaking now for a few years. I just hope that fuel doesn't make it's way out to the Baron or even worse, the reef?

But now that Freebody's caravan has been removed, where is he going to live?

I used to hate him for his smug superiority; an ego so inflated yet too stupid to know he was stupid (though now everyone knows it). Now I have a little pity for him. I shouldn't I know, he and his disgusting wife gave Val more vitriol than I've seen in a long time. It just goes to prove that old adage; what goes round comes round. Paul, it's not your fault; you're just stupid!

Perhaps the old mattress made it's way into Sleepy Bobs chamber where Bob will sleep on it every day?

What is wrong with these people ?

The abandoned car wash cafe thang in Reservoir Rd stands as a permanent reminder of Peabody's acumen [sic] as a business person.

And yet, when you read the letters to the editor , listen to talkback and check the various Cairns FB pages, you will find that the average punter will support dud projects like dredging, a half-assed theatre, Peabody's water world and Aquis every time, while they will fight tooth and nail against worthwhile projects like a new hospital or a world class entertainment precinct with the local shock jock leading the way. Even the lagoon and the new council chambers were violently opposed at the time by a segment of the so-called "real locals"...

Maybe someone should start a "Peabody is a crap business man" FB page. Payback time ! Unbelievable that that yokel was elected to council at one stage. The mind boggles !

i think its a crying shame that this project hasnt come to anything. he may have shit house business acumen however the idea was a good one and hopefully someone else will pick it up. we could do with it

It is really unfortunate that all of Paul's efforts haven't worked out. Regardless of what people may think, I applaud the Freebody's for trying. These projects have a great impact on the economy during the construction process and just too many of them aren't getting off the ground. Hopefully the Aquarium and then the arts centre will be the start of a boom. Maybe Paul will have his watermark at some stag e too

What is wrong with this towns business leaders? Mannings business went tits up, Freebody is a failure and Simon Wilds business went tits up. Utterly hopeless.

Anon 13:54, is that you Paul?

Stop dreaming of a boom. There will be no boom and the aquarium will be a dead duck just like woodwards ZOOM in the casino. So stop dreaming all you hillbillys.

I would applaud Peabody for trying if he wasn't such an obnoxious character who deserves no respect at all. Forget about all this boom and bust stuff and massive Aquis like projects. Cairns needs steady, sustainable development, building on its strengths instead of chasing all sort of wild get-rich-quick schemes and that is exactly what will be happening. Lately I have noticed cruise ships docking in the Inlet on a near daily basis, so I don't quite understand all the pro dredging hysteria either. Maybe people should settle down a bit and focus on what we have instead of constantly moaning about what we don't have and how much better off they are "down South". Cairns is a great place to live as it is and will only get better as time goes by.

The arts centre will not drive a boom but typical irrational thinking of this town. The hospital did not drive a boom at 450m, the bunnings masters construction did not either plus the arts centre is paid for from capital works so is just money that was going to be spent on something else. Not new money at all.

The Aquarium will not drive a boom. If the GBR cannot do that then how will an Aquarium?

These projects help in maintaining continuity for construction industry which is better than nothing I guess, but no boom.

What numbskull would want a boom anyway, they end in pain.

The best things to have happened economically is Attenborough on global TV singing the praises of the GBR, the falling dollar and Central Qld uni setting up shop in the CBD. The boring somewhat isolated arts centre is nothing when every town has one. will not change the image of Cairns being a provincial backwater good as a base but little else as the CEP may have done.

Waterpark may be a good thing attracting families so hope it happens. Not sure what the deal is but the private investor wanted to go it alone if I read right.

Meanwhile Manning is pulling another stunt and so we still chase stupid irrational thought bubbles. No wonder so many give up on Cairns when we have one stupid demand after another.

And if the waterpark, Acquis and the Fish bowl all happen you will have Kevin Brown'stain, the man obsessed with being on Boards, on all three of them. Being an airport CEO/Director/JP Morgan whipping boy isn't enough the self centered control freak, he wants his name attached to everything, it's good for the ego. But then again only a fool thinks he has made it if he is moderately successful in Cairns. Hell, a Gerbil can 'make it big' in this useless backward retarded city full of business failures.

ah that's why they removed the trees at the international airport there poisoned quick get rid of them on ya kev another skeleton in the closet

Anonymous said...

WTF Shanghai, Kev acting brown and not green, Maybe 'Kev the tight arse Jenny' didn't want the trees cos it costs just a few cents to maintain them? He is also obsessed with electricity costs and doesn't like the airconditioning in terminals to be set to cool because it costs more money to run the place and that's why it's always shitfully hot in the pathetic terminals. And ol Kevvy boy obsesses over lightbulbs, take a close look at the terminal ceilings and you will see bulbs not working. That is on purpose, to save electricity. They did that in his other airport in Mackay and it was so dark in there that passengers allegedly tripped over. News to Kevin; the lighting was designed in a specific way to provide safety for those using the building and it shouldn't be changed or decreased unless fully assessed by a certified design engineer. Did you do that at either airport Kevin? If you didn't then naughty naughty boy to you, but if you did do it we are proud of you my bald friend.
