MANNING UNITY TEAM RESPONSE TO ELECTORATE COLLAPSE? BUYING BANKRUPT RACETRACK. HOW RIDICULOUS CAN MANNING GET!

With Mayor "Sleepy" Bob Manning and his Unity Team now hearing from a completely disillusioned Cairns electorate, the big end of town is pressing Manning to make patently fraudulent deals.  Many are now expecting that the balanced and reasonable views being put forward by Jim Brooks and the Connect Cairns team will result in a shift in the election.

Keeping with the Manning stupidity is the announcement that Manning has signed a (completely worthless) Memorandum of Understanding to purchase the Cannon Park Racetrack.

While every other government entity in Australia is privatising assets, Manning's keen sense of business acumen has again been revealed.  Buying an essentially bankrupt racetrack operation and believing that a couple concerts a year (currently being more appropriately held at Fogarty Park) can somehow make this a worthy investment is apparently the same thinking that bankrupted EventsNQ.

Why Manning thinks that the centrally located CBD Fogarty
Park should be replaced by a suburban location with limited parking and virtually no public transport is. . . . frankly. . .insane.

What about all the CBD businesses that reap a bonanza in extra business when concerts are held at Fogarty Park?  We're now throwing the CBD businesses "under the bus"?

You can't make this shit up.

Where's all the "private investment partnerships" that Manning has been preaching to the public?  Why haven't these deep-pockets jumped in to "rescue" the Jockey Club? Where are all the Chinese investors we're told are keen to invest in Cairns?

And why didn't Manning mention this at the Chamber candidate luncheon last week?  (Well, we all know the answer to that).  He would have been booted out the room.

And even more arrogantly, once again, Bob Manning and the Unity Team have decided to make a major decision using public money. . . .

WITH NO CONSULTATION.

This is frankly despicable.

While we have yet to make our voting recommendations, this act makes it clear that NONE of the current councillors should be returned to the public pig trough.

Normally one could put this impaired vision down to poor foresight. But after having a lid lift recently, the vain Mr Manning has no excuse.

Hell no! Bob must go!

"And why didn't Manning mention this at the Chamber candidate luncheon last week?" Yes, he may well have been booted out of the room, but the more likely truth is that he hadn't yet thought of it.
The man is in panic mode thrashing around with a ridiculours thought-bubble per day. The sooner he is put out of his misery the better for us all

Cairns Unity are now claiming on their facebook page "Years ago people laughed at Bob Manning when he said he wanted to turn Cairns Airport from a backwater landing strip into an International Airport - well just look at the airport today. He did it. And he’ll do it again with Light Rail."

However various local LNP old timers are hastily pointing out that Manning was working in Longreach while Mick Borzi, long time Harbour Board Chairman, fought to achieve the development of the international airport - the first stage of which was opened in 1984 - the year Bob Manning returned to Cairns and employment with the Harbour Board.

Even Compost readers seem to be gobsmacked by Mayor Manning's ineptitude and gall. There's close to 100% concurrence with HBW's thoughts regarding the nonsensical racecourse proposal among commenters on the daily organ's website.

According to the Compost, the Cairns Jockey Club wants the showgrounds moved to Cannon Park! As you say, "you can't make this shit up". Incidentally, Cannon Park is adjacent to a large retirement village in Ishmael Road. I wonder how the residents will feel about large music concerts next door.

Ha ha ha what a hilarious act of insanity. An MOU!!! His big election meal ticket and profound business acumen can over deliver an MOU! You really really can't make this shit up can you? At a time when the Libs are pushing for regional Australia development and have billions stashed away for local Council who have the intelligence to put forward proposals for shovel ready funding, old coconut husk comes up with a pithy MOU concept for a race track. No wonder old Bob and his cronies are going to be handed their asses in a handkerchief and voted into oblivion. Hillbillys

There is a rumour that the current Cairns showgrounds is believed can be better used ,, possibly as the location for a rectangle football stadium ,, and the show that only really needs a venue for portion of the year might better use (and better share) the underuterlised cananon park racegrounds/ space ,,, that's one of the rumors at least .. ??

Make sense to me.
Racecourse relocates to Gordonvale.
Showground do a deal with Council and move to to Cannon Park.
Council then flogs the Showground land for multi-unit development.
Every one's a winner, that's for sure.

I've tried to get this question answered by my councillor, Richie Bates. He removed the comment from his Facebook page. Guess he doesn't want to answer.

When were you told that Mayor Bob was going to buy Cannon Park? Were our councillors even consulted? Doesn't it make the whole group of you look stupid if major decisions like this are made by the Mayor alone without public consultation or even councillor consultation? The for you to distance yourself from the Unity Team.

Cannon Park cannot be sold because the Jockey Club don't own it. It's as simple as that. Ask the councilor who did his level best to flog it off when he was CJC President. Ask the original Reef Casino developer who had to back out of a deal because of the lack of a deed of ownership. The incorporation of the CJC meant that they took control of the assets - improvements - not the land. That's why they can't borrow money against it.

I've read elsewhere of the concern over Chairman Bob's lack of consultation with his cohort. I can tell you the CJC has not consulted members over this.

I can also tell you that anything that interferes with the vision of the racing surface is taboo - the main reason nothing over two feet high is in the infield.

This is pie in the sky clap-trap. Don't worry about the retirement village neighbors - worry about the hundred on-course thoroughbreds and their owners and trainers. Utter errant nonsense.

Not nice of Manning trying to rewrite history and claim Borzi'e efforts as his own. I have seen this story appearing at various places, so there is obviously a concerted effort to spread it as the new truth. Cairns being Cairns, many will fall for it. Wonder if the shockjock is shameless enough to jump on the bandwagon ? After all he knows the truth, having had Borzi on his show numerous times.

polling has opened up at the showgrounds, out with the old man and his unity sycophants

Schilling now on 4 CA reading an apology and retraction about his demented slurs against Jim Brooks. Sounding pretty rattled. Off with his head !!!

Destiny Prophet, you are correct.
It was MICK BORZI and I believe Charlie Woodward who did all the hard yakka in getting the old airport changed to international standards Once again, the LNP are telling bloody huge lies.

FROM ALAN HUDSON'S BOOK 'GROWING UP WITH CAIRNS" Chapter 7, Page 118:

"On February 24, 1981, the Queensland government said it would not agree to formation of a new statutory body to take control of the airport, and on March 31, 1981, the Cairns Harbour Board (later Cairns Port Authority) under chairman MICK BORZI took over negotiations........"

"Mick Borzi's dynamic leadership in the development of Cairns International Airport was officially recognised when he was nominated as one of six finalists for 1984 Queenslander of the Year."

Frankly, I am bloody sick and tired of the LNP re-writing the history of Cairns. We had Gavin King claiming to be the first non-Labor politician in "100 years". HE WAS NOT!!!!

Then we had the Cairns Post insinuating that it was the LNP Council led by RON DAVIS which built the original Cairns Civic Theatre. It was not. The Kev Crathern Labor Council built the original Cairns Civic Theatre.

For people interested in the history of Cairns, I urge you to go out and buy a copy of Alan Hudson's book, "Growing Up with Cairns." There should still be copies available at the Cairns Museum bookshop. Also if you can find Vera Bradley's "I Didn't Know That" which covers Cairns during World War 11. (Some of the prominent ie "wealthy" families in Cairns made their money by arriving during the war years when locals panicked and sold their homes for a song to these carpet baggers.)

It is worthwhile building a home library of books on local history as our "journalists" of today don't bother to do much research or cross-reference any so called "facts".

Mackenzie just tells a litany of lies, mis-information and hands down pants fantasies and thus enables the self-serving narcissists like King and company to get up and falsely claim all sorts of self made wonders.

One of the councillors was asked about the billion dollar light that they've supposedly been planning for 15 months. The response was that there is no plan, no feasibility study and it might not be light rail after all! Same for the rectangular stadium, same for the Cannon Park MOU. How can Manning and Unity get away with these unrealistic and unachievable thought bubbles?

Anonymous said...

Yeah well I hate to tell you this but the airport has one of the worst domestic apron designs in all of Australia. Plus the airport has leaking fuel pipes possibly due to substandard welds when all the work was done originally. I wouldn't be claiming airports as anything fantastic. It's pretty ordinary by Engineering standards. Manning is desperate, what next will he make claim to building the barrier reef?

The nasty attack ads on radio have started (read by Steve Ahmed who does the real estate stuff on 4 CA). Apparently Jim Brooks's team has values that are alien to people in FNQ....oh and he is a Val Schier clone.

HindenBob and his Cairns Urinary team must be about the most incompetent non-achievers to ever draw a Council salary. We pay this bloke $220k per year?

Ba Ha Ha Ha

Manning is desperate for more dinero as we have all learned, so the attack is going to be vicious. If Jim does win and become Mayor, the attack dogs will form a pack and he will be hounded every day every week every month as Val Schier was in the hope that Jim will collapse in a heap and resign. If there are any Unity Team members left on the Council they will be pressured into all sorts of dirty schemes such as the concocted COMMENT FOR CASH plot which was used against Val Schier. These Unity people play dirty and cannot lie in bed straight.

Thanks AA for your info. I will endeavour to get myself a copy of the book by the distinguished former editor of The Cairns Post. As I have clearly learned there are certain ambitious peoples in Cairns in whose interests it is to re-write history.

Talk about no transparency with this Unity Council. The Yorkeys Knob community woke to find that 7 story apartment block had been approved by Council, yet without any consultation or knowledge given to the immediate affected residents. This increase in height is over 100% residential 3 approved in the Cairns Plan. WHY DID THIS HAPPEN BOB ?

Multi unit development at the showground? Nothing is being built in Cairns and won't be for the foreseeable future. Any sign of AQUIS yet? Maybe they could build it at the showground?
