CAIRNS ECONOMY CRIPPLED BY BUSINESS, GOVERNMENT, MARKETING, AND LEADERSHIP FAILURES

With more that 25% of the Cairns economy directly related to the tourism performance of the region, the continued failures by all levels of government along with amateurish and uncoordinated business and marketing leadership are the major causes of continued high unemployment in the region.

CURRENT DESIGN PROPOSAL FOR THE
EAGERLY-AWAITED AQUIS PROJECT
The few employers who HAVE attempted to expand their employment (including two of the major reef trip operators) have found a dearth of 18-26yo residents available for training and employment.  This excepting the local ATSI population - which one manager at the weekend's Amateurs Ball loudly told his tablemates"are unemployable and aren't even considered" at his company.  More shocking than this statement were the nods of approval from the rest of the table - one of which was a local banking manager!

The "published dress code" for the Ball - which required "Black Tie, with a lounge suit as a minimum for men", brought a laugh of derision from a table full of Melbournites who flew up for a holiday - who were appalled at the number of locals who adhered to the dress code but still were traipsing around without footwear!

PROMOTE LOCAL TOURISM?
NO, EASIER TO PULL IRRELEVANT
NEWS ABOUT AMERICAN
RAPPERS
The drain of Cairns by young people is a serious issue that leaders fail to address.  This includes those getting a tertiary education from our local universities - with a documented 84% of locals graduating from these schools leaving Cairns to seek employment.

Andrigyne MP and Minister for Blogging Warren Entsch has zero plans for growing employment in his electorate, instead focusing on personal issues like gay marriage.  Entsch was a director and chairman of the Roy Lavis company CEC Group in the lead-up to its collapse in a mountain of bad debt.  In April, prior to the federal election, Entsch was prepared to cross the floor to vote in favour of the Labor-sponsored Royal Commission on Banking.  However Roy Lavis confirmed this week that he has apparently managed to "strong-arm" the flaccid Entsch into another (sigh) flip-flop, with Entsch clearly still taking orders from the big end of town at the expense of Cairns residents.

The Cairns Post, which faithfully reported as "fact" the flood of misleading and dishonest press releases coming from CEC (written by self-appointed "business guru" Andrew Griffiths) continues to spout the long-since-proven nonsense that a bank caused the collapse of the Lavis companies.  At one point close to the collapse, Griffiths wrote in a CEC Press Release that "the banks are fully supportive". . .   Anyone taking advice from Griffiths needs to have their head examined.

Then we get the report that Sleepy Bob Manning is (sigh)
WELCOME TO CAIRNS
again meeting with the Fung family on the once-again downscaled Aquis resort.  Manning continues to act as a delusional cheerleader for this ill-fated project.  With China continuing to clampdown on outflows of hard currency from the communist country, continued promotion of this fantasy saps energy from the rest of the community.

Cairns Central along with the CBD is seeing continued business failures and empty shopfronts.  While Cairns Central still remains the ONLY Lend Lease-owned facility without free (or ANY) wifi service for their guests, they've upgraded to a large screen display board over their centre meeting area.  But instead of supporting the local tourism industry, they've decided instead that news about American rap music artists is more vital then our local community.

The lack of coordinated marketing to our visiting tourists has been a major failure by Advance Cairns and TTNQ for decades.

Meanwhile, do-nothing Barron River MP Craig Crawford (along with the carpetbagging Brett Moller, who's already looking for a step up the political ladder) rushed to the Cairns Port this week to take "credit" for the new home-porting of the P&O Ship Pacific Eden.  The Pacific Eden was called "Worse than a one-star motel" by the Sydney Morning Herald just a few months ago.  However it represents the future of the Cairns Boutique Port experience - a midsize ship that fits into our port just fine WITHOUT $300m in reef-wrecking dredging.  Crawford's electorate does NOT include the Cairns CBD nor the port, but he rushed to take credit for this service just to ensure the Cairns MP, Rob Pyne, didn't.

Meanwhile, who's doing anything to solve our chronic problems of low employment, the exodus of the young and educated, the lack of public and private infrastructure investment, and the shortfall in public services from places like the Cairns Hospital?

We await some news. . . . .

People with the talent to to lead this city have the talent to make it anywhere so they leave and we get stuck with dumb and dumber. Best just to leave the region. Cairns has no future.

Entsch has failed Cairns. That is his legacy, however the local fucktards keep voting the 30 stone drongo back in so 'you get what you pay for'. He is loving the lame media attention over the queer plebasite, but thats all he can come up with, a little bit of attention over a non-essential subject. As always, he is a politician so his excessive income is gaurenteed for both now and after he retires. How fortunate to be one of the privileged few.

Instead of slagging the young people around the joint maybe you should be talking about the greed of "the major reef trip operators" who for tax purposes structure their operation so that the kids wages are equal to their 'training fees,' so for 11 or 14 weeks or whatever they earn zip. They can't get the dole or any training allowances from Centrlink because they are being paid a "wage". The ole catch22. I suppose they can just do a few B&E's to survive or maybe a job in the sex industries that seem to thrive in this hick town. Any ideas Bob? Nah...thought as much.

Cairns has a sex industry?

What Cairns desperately needs is altruistic leaders with vision and commitment to its future. Our current leaders are ageing white conservative males who maintain the status quo to serve their own needs, and who appoint one another to key roles. Until this cycle is broken nothing will change. They don't know anything about economic development and diversification. I think that the only way things will improve is for the current crop to die off, or for a major crisis to occur in the region.

What we need in this town is for all the unemployed (or should that be unemployable) to be given free big screen TV's and Pokemon Go. That's what will stimulate the economy!!

Don't get me started on local Tourism, in particular 'Fantasea'. If these clowns are whinging about the economy and profits been down it is probably because nobody can afford the ridiculous reef tour prices, complete with $10 bottles of water and topped off to a trip to a reef where millions of people have trampled it to death and it looks like complete shit. Fuck that. It would be cheaper and more interesting to go on a tour of Entch's fridge! (Or underwear drawer)

TTNQ is a complete joke and always have been. When is something going to be done about them?

Have a look at who Tropical Coast Tourism (the Tourism Body under TTNQ and funded by Cassowary Coast Regional Council) paid to come to the cassowary Coast to tell them how to market their own towns because they were a complete and utter failure at doing it themselves. Peter Kenyon, yeah Google his name and see where he was involved in covering up for 15 years the antics of a pedophile at a boys home in WA. Hardly what we need in this area.

Pyne is too busy worrying about world affairs to give a stuff about Cairns. Had high hopes for him, now I am beginning to think he's worse than King- and that's saying something.

The word on the street down south is that Cairns is too expensive to visit and the service is crap. The restaurants are over-rated and the tours are a ripoff. The pubs in Melbourne serve up better food than the so-called top eateries at Palm Cove. There are a few million people down here wanting to get away from the cold for a couple of weeks, but just cannot afford to holiday in their own country. Bali it is!

I often wonder how many people read, and share, this blog? 5, 10, 20?
Wazza romped in by thousands of votes. Sleepy romped in by thousand of votes. All the old brigade seem to be firmly entrenched in their positions.
So where's the revolution???
When will many thousands of intelligent (?) voters rise up and take action? Or is there only 5, or 10 or 20 of them?
All the good info on Hillbilly seems to have little effect on the (Cairns) world at large.......
Instead of (often) wise and revealing comments on this blog, we need to somehow develop a practical strategy for change, otherwise each year will continue to be a repetition of past (mediocre) years.
Sometimes I despair at how ineffective we collectively are.....

What sad fuck'n blog site this is.
Be positive or fuck off ...

Yes I agree. Stop being negative people, this is Cairns and we are known to be too lazy and stupid to know any different. And we like being that way, as well as non-progressive and living in the 70's.

In a state that votes Hanson and Christensen, Dutton and Katter, we are not that bad. QLD is backwards. Always has been and always will be.

Anonymous 15/9 19.03 It's a pity you can't face reality and instead chose to live in a dream world, or maybe Fairyland.....

Methinks Mr Krint makes a fair point. Trying to influence opinion in Cairns is akin to banging one's head against a proverbial brick wall. We live in a cultural backwater, where progressive thinking is virtually non-existent.

Annon 19:03 is obviously a Cueball, King, Entsche and Manning footstool. Their very own 'one man cheer squad'. Your'e a dickhead mate - go stick your todger in a bucket filled with 'crown of thorns starfish.

Even Kevin Browns old airport, Cairns, is feeling the pinch - they are suing the owners of that giant white piece of shit at the airports general aviation section, the Belfast, for $100,000 in "parking fees". Yes that's the 'white elephant' that usually has birds nesting in the engines and under the wings, and old mate rocks up periodically wearing no hi-vis best or ASIC and he tinkers around with it. My inside source and chief gossiper said that NQA want the plane gone so they can continue with plans to build their shopping precinct in that area! Anyway, poor old Kevin's crew were never good at winning court cases so I guess they will lose this one also! I reckon they should keep it because it is much prettier than the terminals and the planes ass isn't as big as some of managements asses!

Seriously, some of the slop served up by our so called "restaurants" would be enough to put a person off their vitals for weeks. I have had a few meals lately in restaurants on the esplanade and found them largely inedible. In one restaurant whereby people kept on coming continuously, waiting in the doorway and standing outside until tables were cleared and chairs available, I was served what was like heated frozen vegetables served on a bed of rice and covered in a sauce straight out of a packet. It was obvious the owners didn't give a shit as tourists wouldn't come back a second time and nor will this local.

Annon 22:49, the Belfast is just another Cairns Airport Commercial team success story!! A massive white pile of shit taking up space and achieving nothing. Indeed, very reminiscent of some of the Managers!! But it's ironic that while General Aviation lease rates have been jacked up exponentially over the past 4 years forcing out many businesses, this bucket of bolts sits there for free? Perhaps they will fix it by November just in time to fly Antonson out of the country?
P.S Maybe they can tap into the underground fuel leak and use that to refuel the plane for its departure? Just make sure there is no fire fighting foam contamination mixed in with the fuel.
Good ol Cairns, Australia's greatest airport (un)success story!!

I thought the giant Belfart brought in Fionas lunch every day, Kevin's new business shirts every week, Antonsons shopping from overseas 'conferences', and Kevin and the Boards monthly bonuses??

I returned from Cambodia to see another tower crane. Wow, that makes...two!
Better than none I suppose. Apartment building slowing in Cambodia as the Chinese cash dries up but at the beach heaps of Chinese tourists and Chinese casinos.
AQUIS was never going to happen but the boys got a few junkets out of it. Any news of the losses by the Council on their computer system?
Entsch was returned because the vote was split by One Nation who got over 7000, the Christian chap about five thousand, ALP about 8000 and fatty about 10,000. He raved after the election about how we were now going to build the house, did anyone understand that rubbish?
But its a nice place if you dont need a job or to make money in business and the residents are no more brain dead than most Australians.
