We're now finding out that the building can't be finished as proposed, the number of jobs is MUCH less than advertised, and that the place likely won't even be able to open without $1M in government money.
MORE of our money.
Developer Daniel Leipnek's original project proposal blew out from $35M until over $50M, and the ratepayers have chipped in with free parking. Well, we actually just guaranteed that this whole area of the CBD would become a parking nightmare, and Leipnek's paying nothing.
Now he's cap-in-hand asking for government money, and threatening to keep the place shuttered without it. Who can blame him? This strategy worked with the Bob "Sleepy" Manning, and we DO have a state election coming soon.
In a coffee shop on the Esplanade this morning, someone was heard to say "why doesn't someone get the arab to part with a lazy million". However a REAL businessman would run screaming into the good night after hearing what's been going on at this aquarium. Better to go down to the casino and put it on plaid.
It's a shame that so many good projects in this town die from neglect, bad business planning, stupidity (that means you, Paul Freebody!!!), and government laziness.
