Byrne approved several highrise towers on Grafton, Aplin, Sheridan, and other areas. And this includes Harbour Lights. These units are almost impossible to resell for the owners. The first complaint of course is the shitty construction and poor design".

As someone who has carried out lots of maintenance work on these units, I completely agree.Time and time again these things get built in a hurry, sub-contactors are squeezed for every dollar by the greedy developer, so they cut corners wherever they can, to survive. Result, poorly designed, poorly constructed buildings, which need extensive rep[airs as soon as they are finished. Conveniently the developer will have gone broke by then, as has happened with virtual all unit blocks/towers built before the GFC, leaving the body corporates/ unit owners with massive repair bills. I know of one unit complex in McLeod St. where unit owners where first hit with $ 15,000.00 each to repair leaks all over the building and repairs to common areas plus a similar amount for repairs inside their individual units. Doesn't do much for your investment, does it ? The scumbag developers meanwhile are lying low, working under different names and waiting to emerge in time for the next boom. If you are thinking of buying a unit in the CBD, make sure you have a building inspection carried out and keep in mind that you also have to pay for the upkeep of the entire building.

As for the noise complaints, I'm in two minds about that. I remember the fabulous Sunday Sessions in the corner pub in Port Douglas in the late 80's. Great live music, locals and visitors alike loved it. Then someone built some units nearby. Some of the Southern visitors had fallen in love with the place, bought a unit and moved up. Then they started complaining about the noise, live music was banned and the Sunday Session was dead...

It is unfortunate that the very valid concerns that are being addressed by the proposed liquor law changes are again being used as a political football, instead of being discussed on their merits. It is of course no surprise which side the shock-jock and his mentally challenged listeners are taking.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3182703408922632531.post-64954847700436823732016-02-14T19:02:32.594+10:002016-02-14T19:02:32.594+10:0014/2/16 12:20 - you said.

What does that tell you about Cairns local representatives? They are a first class joke. Queensland is going to be pivotal in the next federal election, and the Liberals particularly know this. With all the talk of regional development, white papers and state and federal funding program's, only an idiot of a regional Mayor couldn't pull in some of that slush money. The state and federal governments are willing to buy our vote and give us money, yet people like Manning and Entsch are incapable of pulling in that coin! What a joke! I don't know how either of these fools dare to show their faces around town, we have the highest fuel prices, insurance, rates and food costs, and Sleepy has done nothing, Migaloo has done nothing. These clowns have helped to stymie our region and set us back 20 years. They aren't qualified enough to get out of bed in the morning let alone lead, represent and develop our region.

The problem with Mayors and Councillors is that they don't get voted in based on ability, they get voted in based on how long they've lived in the region, what shonky deals they have pulled of, what local developers pocket they are in. It's all bullshit, most of these politicians are totally under qualified to run a business let alone an entire region. It's like having a moron who leaves school at Year 12 and still can't read and write become a heart surgeon, the concept is never going to work. It about time we had politiicans in place had a proven track record in business, rather than getting the job because they are a sociopath, crook, or arse licker. Shier had it right in the first place: on the waterfront, a signature building, our own mini-Opera House, beautiful location and backdrop, a short and pleasant walk from Esplanade cafes and restaurants, and the first thing a visitor would see from a berthing cruise ship. Manning and his hillbilly spoilers cancelled that for God knows what reason (knowing the old bastard, spite most likely) and he has been all-over-the-place since trying to justify his stuff-up; madcap public/private concepts at Aquis and every other harebrained scheme since. Now we are to get a bloody revamp of an old edge-of-town cinema-looking building which is not even fit for purpose.

Is there anyone with the courage to say Shier was right? Are you there Jim Brooks? Entsch wanted where port offices are, Byrne wanted it the other side of the convention centre and Val across the road. Manning promised that same block as well. So that area was decided on. Byrne was going to spend 90 mil building a new centre but ratepayers were only going to pay 50 mil for the CEP. So they then went to operating costs as the issue but they could have borrowed another 20-39mil for that and still come out on top plus the economy would have generated far more income had we been pro-active rather re-active. Rates would have been impacted more by Byrne land and Mannings plan. We have been ripped off by 3rd rate politicians. If we vote for the idiots again only ourselves to blame..
