And it may well be true that ongoing investigations warrant secrecy, but the fact that indictments have been laid suggest that there is a strong case already and any other people involved would be well aware of it.

Russ Parker's real problem is not that we suspect him personally of bias. The problem is that we can see a long term pattern which stretches back to the corruption of the Bjelke-Petersen era, the political support given to the LNP by the police union then and now, and more recently the sacking of Dr Alex Douglas MP from the State parliamentary ethics committee, the reduction in powers of the Crime and Misconduct Commission and the ongoing bias of the Murdoch media which dominates Queensland.

Secrecy and discretion may be necessary in some instances, but unless handled very carefully can be used to hide bias and corruption.

As far a media bias is concerned, it's all too obvious in the current election campaign. And as someone pointed out in this column recently, a DUI involving a Labor member was splashed all over the Cairns Post some years ago, but Entsch's case went unreported until raised by HBW.

Secrecy can also be a concern issue when it is used to protect the party in power. The LNP has form here, on many issues, with the latest being their announced intention to suppress information on refugee boat arrivals.

Russ, I think you're an honest man, but you need to accept that there is a credibility problem as many people see too many links between the LNP, the media and at least some of the police. As a result people may shout 'fire' even when it's only smoke, because there's too much smoke about, and it's not just from Trout's cane burn. Disappointed, but not entirely surprised I guess. Hopefully you'll allow me the courtesy of a reply.

Firstly, The daily media releases I prepare are a just a brief snapshot of the day to day activities of the many different stations, units, sections and squads that comprise the Far Northern Police District. Not every arrest or charge is included on the daily release. It would be impossible for that to occur for a a multitude of reasons.

I find your statement that the omission of this particular incident from one of my media releases "has been troubling to several in the QPS, who've provided this information to us", particularly amusing. The information regarding this particular case was contained in a document reserved for items of a significant nature. These documents carry a clear instruction as the whether or not the information can be released to media. In this case, and I've double checked just in the event that I may have erred originally, the report is clearly marked 'Not for media release'. This is not at all unusual for significant events as often, and I believe this was the case with this report, they are the subject of an ongoing investigation or operation and media coverage can be counter-productive to say the very least.

Perhaps you might like to point this out to those supposed "several in the QPS, who've provided this information" so they can look it up for themselves.

Secondly, I'm not a member of any political party, and in fact have been somewhat of a swinging voter all my life. I really don't get too excited about politics in general.

No doubt there will be plenty who will pick this response to pieces and that's fair enough - are we not indeed fortunate to live in a democracy and enjoy free speech!

Oh, and just to clarify your opening sentence; This incident allegedly occurred several months ago - not last week.

Best regards,

Russ Parker

Russ Parkerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08846936223568908845noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3182703408922632531.post-59470657843535600162013-09-04T21:16:31.217+10:002013-09-04T21:16:31.217+10:00Labor are just as guilty of this kind of behaviour...Labor are just as guilty of this kind of behaviour.
